Card/Transcription No.: 266g-1 THE MINATURE GOLD COFFIN FROM THE N. E. RECEPTACLE. Bears the Neith Dua-mutef formula. Max. L. 39 cms. Was closed by the means of twisted linen tied round the neck and ankles. Made of beaten gold and decorated with coloured glass and carnelian. The glass is of lapis-blue and turquoise-blue colour, the carnelian has been backed with a red pigment to enhance its colour. Wears the nemes -headdress, the Nekhebet-Buto insignia on forehead. Holds in the R. hand the flagellum and in the L. hand the crozier sceptre. Wears round the neck a double bead necklace and the usekh -collar. The shoulders and upper part of the body enveloped in the wings of Nekhebet and Buto, the rest of the body being decorated with feather ornament - the wings of Isis. The work of the lid does note agree exactly with that of the coffin, neither does the lid fit truly on to the coffin. They may be the work of two craftsmen working independently upon a given design. Upon the soles of the feet is the symbol <>, corresponding to a similar mark upon the lid of the receptacle. CONTENTS: The ... wrapped in linen mummiform. Card/Transcription No.: 266g-2 266, G. (N. E.) MINIATURE GOLD COFFIN POSITION:- In N. E. receptacle (i.e. the hollow which takes the place of the NEITH, DUA-MUTEF canopic jar) DIMENSIONS:- Max. L. 39 cents. DESCRIPTION: - Was tied with a piece of twisted linen at the neck and ankles. Was wrapped in linen; stood upright, facing west. Unguent poured over it. Beaten gold, inlaid with coloured glass and carnelian - the glass being of lapis lazuli and turquoise colour; the carnelian is clear in colour and has a red pigment - to enrich its colour. Headdress of nemes form; Nekhebet & Buto insignia on forehead; beard; the crozier-sceptre & flagellum in hands; two small bead necklaces and usekh -collar round throat & over chest; the upper part of the body enclasped the wings of the Nekhebet and Buto vulture, the bodies of the birds being on the lower sides of the coffin; the rest of the decoration being feathered (Rishi) ornament. An inscription down the front of the coffin ending at the toes (see copy attached)

They may be the work of two men working independently on a given design. On the bottom of the feet is the sign <>evidently the guiding mark (see corresponding mark on the lid of the N. E. jar). Treatment Cleaned with warm water and ammonia and then with pyridine and acetone. Waxed.

Anthropoid in form symbolizing Osiris - the portrait of the King. Headdress : Nemes , striated with lapis blue glass (much discoloured and decayed). Insiginia : Nekhbet right, Buto left; Nekhbet , beak of dark black wood (?)ebony, eyes of obsidian. Buto . Head blue faience, rest of wood, covered with gold and inlaid with red, blue and turquoise blue glass. Face and Ears : - gold, eyes obsidian and arragonite, eye lids and brows of lapis blue glass. Description. Gold mask or similitude of the King. The face with pierced ears (afterwards covered over with gold foil) has eyes and eyebrows inlaid with lapis lazuli, opaque white calcite (frequently termed aragonite), and obsidian pupils. Gold Mask of the King. 2 Mace and Winlock Tomb of Senebtisi p 43, fig 26; Lacau Sarcophages No 28087, 64, plate LIV 487, etc) which is striated with bands of lapis lazuli-coloured glass radiating from the lower part of the back of the headdress. The headdress terminates at the back in a kind of pigtail which falls between the shoulder blades and which was inlaid with lapis lazuli-coloured glass horizontal bands. On the front the two flaps of the headdress are represented falling from the shoulders over the chest. Upon the forehead above band are the royal insignia: - on the right side the Nekhbet vulture head of massive gold, beak of horn-coloured glass, eyes missing (? of obsidian). Note: right side = north side as the mask lay in the sarcophagus. The body and tail of the snake is of chased massive gold and extends over the top of the headdress just beyond the centre. On the chest and back extensions of the mask: in front below the neck and over the chest an auxiliary <> "usekh" collarette of "The Hawk", of gold inlaid with segments of lapis lazuli quartz (backed with red pigment to imitate carnelian) and green felspar engraved to imitate tubular beadwork, the whole having an outer margin of cloisonné pendants inlaid with lapis lazuli glass and quartz coloured as before to imitate carnelian; these pendants are interspaced with turquoise-coloured glass inlay. Gold Mask of the King 4 The collarette has shoulder pieces in the form of hawks' heads which like the collarette are of gold and are inlaid with obsidian (eyes), and lapis lazuli-coloured glass (facial markings); the beak is of obsidian. On the back extension of the mask engraved is a text (see note attached). Beard Fixed to the chin a conventional beard of gold inlaid with lapis lazuli glass (decomposed to grey tint) to imitate the plaited beard of Osiris. Necklaces Around the neck and auxiliary to it a triple necklace having clasps in the form of lotus flowers and uraei. Upper necklace - large disc-shaped beads of yellow and red gold and dark blue faience; middle necklace: - large disc-shaped beads of yellow gold; lower necklace: - similar to upper necklace. Gold Mask of the King 6 The scarab hung pendant to the neck, by means of ornamental straps and long thick linen cord and was attached to the side clasps of the necklaces, around the base of the uraei. The ornamental straps of the scarab are made up of odd parts of the trappings of Smenkh-ka-Ra similar to those of the side trappings found on the exterior decoration (256, B) of Tut ankh Amen's mummy. On their backs are parts of a 'Heart Text' which included the cartouche <> of Smenkh-ka-Ra. They are threaded together with green, red, and dark blue faience tubular beads intermixed with gold tubular beads, which like the plaques have no particular order and are obviously odd pieces and beads used. Innermost edge of band D had broken & come loose anciently. It was bound round with a thin slip of papyrus. Cleaned with damp brush. Sprayed with celluloid in amyl acetate.
