Card/Transcription No.: 256-2 256 2 B The hands, which were separate from the mask, were sewn to the outer wrapping, the thread however being decayed: the hands held the Osiris insignia - the crook and flail - which have suffered considerably from the humidity, some parts being much disintegrated. Depending from the hands and from a central winged figure of Nekhbet were four broad transverse and three broad longitudinal bands of flexible inlaid gold trappings, of the latter one was central and one at each side. These bands were sewn to the wrappings and were entirely covered by the black pitch-like material of the "libation". The outer linen wrappings of the mummy from the shoulders to the ankles were covered by the "libation" and are blackened and carbonized: the linen covering the feet, although not blackened, is also in a very fragile and powdery condition. Both the mask and the mummy itself are stuck to the gold shell of the coffin (third innermost No 255) by means of the

DESCRIPTION: 1 Hands of burnished gold , bearing wristlets inlaid with: lapis lazuli and turquoise glass, and carnelian (quartz). and holding the flagellum (R. side) and the crozier (L. side) composed of: silver core, overlaid with lapis lazuli glass and gold bands. Remainder gold casing. The bead work of the flagellum comprise as follows: - eleven rows of three <>-shaped beads: commencing with turquoise glass, gold, carnelian, gold, lapis lazuli glass, gold, turquoise, gold, carnelian, gold, and lapis lazuli glass. (only carnelian are real stone) 2 Gold Pectoral Ba-(bird) in the form of the Nekhbet vulture having human head of burnished gold, headdress, diadem, collarette, body, wings and tail inlaid with turquoise, lapis lazuli and carnelian coloured glass (see note attached). Eyelets at back for sewing to wrappings. The talons hold shen -symbols of carnelian (quartz) centres and turquoise coloured glass borders.

(See Note attached) The gold plaques of the two longitudinal and four transverse bands are held in place by threads of violet glass bead borders, which are passed through eyelet fastenings on the sides of the plaques. These bands have outer margins of narrow plain sheet-gold which are similarly attached. In these plain gold margins are tiny holes at intervals for sewing them to the outer wrappings of the Mummy. 4 Ornamental side strap down each side of the Mummy, from the shoulders to the feet, sewn to the outer wrappings and attached (in festoon fashion) to the four transverse bands. These ornamental straps are made up of inlaid gold plaques, held together by threads of beads. The various devices employed are as follows: -

(Continued). 4 From the shoulders to the first transverse band : prenomen and nomen of the King surmounted with solar discs alternating with solar uraei, bordered on each side by plaques of Rîshi (feather) and drop-pendant design. From first to second transverse bands : plaques of Ded and That symbols bordered on each side by plaques of Rîshi (feather) and disc pattern. From second to third transverse bands : double row of plaques bearing disc and drop-pendant pattern. From third to fourth transverse bands : a single row of broad plaques of similar design. From fourth transverse bands to feet : a single row of gold plaques bearing a geometrical device of rectangles and circles, which have a double row of heads on each side.

The materials and colours of the inlay upon the plaques of these side straps are: carnelian (quartz), lapis lazuli and turquoise coloured glass with bosses of gold - the plaques being of gold cloisonné type. REMARKS: On the back of the cartouches, Uraei, and Rîshi and drop-pendant plaques of the first section of the ornamental side straps are engraved hieroglyphic texts (see Note attached), the reading of which is not consecutive. In some cases cartouches have been deliberately cut out, plain gold inserted in their place, but in one instance the original cartouche <> which is that of Smenkh-ka-Ra remains. Thus, leading to the assumption that these particular plaques were the residue from the burial of that King utilized for

Upon practically all the plaques of the longitudinal, transverse bands, and those of the ornamental side straps are numbers on the back to show their order, but it was only in the case of the plaques of the longitudinal bands that the order indicated by numbers had been strictly adhered to. With all these trappings there was evidence of rough handling at some ancient time - probably before or during the actual burial. In fact portions of these trappings, which may have been surplus pieces, were found on the floor of the passage and antechamber when we first opened the tomb. These, unless they are proved to belong to some other decorative object in the tomb, may have come from the mummy when carried into the tomb???
