A former director of [Colonial Williamsburg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonial_Williamsburg "Colonial Williamsburg")’s archaeological research program and the author of more than 20 books, he was heralded by his peers as the "father of [historical archaeology](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_archaeology "Historical archaeology")".[1] ## Biography [[edit](/w/index.php?title=Ivor_No%C3%ABl_Hume&action=edit§ion=1 "Edit section: Biography")] Born in London, Noël Hume studied at [Framlingham College](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Framlingham_College "Framlingham College"), Suffolk and [St. Lawrence College](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Lawrence_College,_Ramsgate "St. Lawrence College, Ramsgate"), Kent. He spent a short stint in the [British Army](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Army "British Army") during [World War II](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II "World War II"), and as an assistant stage manager for a London theatre, before deciding to pursue archaeology as a career and joining the staff of [Guildhall Museum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum_of_London "Museum of London") in London where he worked from 1949 to 1957. His early speciality was 17th and 18th century wine bottles. He became chief archaeologist and director of the expanded [Colonial Williamsburg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonial_Williamsburg "Colonial Williamsburg") archaeology program in 1957[2] and served in that capacity for the next three decades. Noël Hume discovered and excavated the 17th century site of [Wolstenholme Towne](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolstenholme_Towne "Wolstenholme Towne"), at [Carter's Grove Plantation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carter's_Grove_Plantation "Carter's Grove Plantation") just east of [Williamsburg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Williamsburg,_Virginia "Williamsburg, Virginia").[3] Wolstenholme at [Martin's Hundred](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin's_Hundred "Martin's Hundred") was one of the early Virginia settlements after Jamestown and evidence of the [1622 Indian attack](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_massacre_of_1622 "Indian massacre of 1622") was found in the deaths of several of the citizens. Major excavations in Colonial Williamsburg included work at the original site of [Eastern State Hospital](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_State_Hospital_\(Virginia\) "Eastern State Hospital \(Virginia\)"), conducted in 1972 — which was the largest site work since the excavation of the [Governor's Palace](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governor's_Palace_\(Williamsburg,_Virginia\) "Governor's Palace \(Williamsburg, Virginia\)") in 1930 — the [James Geddy House](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Geddy_House?action=edit&redlink=1 "James Geddy House \(page does not exist\)") and shop, [Weatherburn's Tavern](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weatherburn's_Tavern?action=edit&redlink=1 "Weatherburn's Tavern \(page does not exist\)") and outbuildings and the cabinetmakers shop. Noël Hume retired as Director of the Department of Archaeological Research at Colonial Williamsburg in 1988.
