He is Professor of Archaeology and Cultural Heritage at the [Royal Agricultural University](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Agricultural_University "Royal Agricultural University")[1] in [Cirencester](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cirencester "Cirencester"), and Emeritus Professor at the [University of Bristol](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Bristol "University of Bristol"). One of his former students is the archaeologist and television presenter [Sam Willis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Willis "Sam Willis"). He is part of a project to establish the Cultural Heritage Institute in the former [Great Western Railway](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Western_Railway "Great Western Railway") carriage works at [Swindon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swindon "Swindon"), offering research and masters training from 2020.[2] He has conducted excavations in [Zanzibar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zanzibar "Zanzibar"), Egypt, the Caribbean, North America, Central America and France, as well as sites in Britain. He contributed to a programme by Time Life Television _Lost Civilisations – Africa_ in 1996 and to a [Channel 4](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_4 "Channel 4") television programme on the Atlantic slave trade in 1998. He was closely involved in the inception of the long-running [Channel 4](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_4 "Channel 4") television series _[Time Team](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Team "Time Team")_ and the third episode was filmed in his home town of [Much Wenlock](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Much_Wenlock "Much Wenlock"), [Shropshire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shropshire "Shropshire"), in 1994.
