# The 2018 exhumation of Semyon Zolotaryov — research note

## 1. The facts of the exhumation

**Date and place.** 12 April 2018, Ivanovskoye cemetery, Yekaterinburg, the grave under the star-topped obelisk inscribed «Семен Золотарев», next to Krivonischenko's. KP: «12 апреля на Ивановском кладбище Екатеринбурга мы провели эксгумацию тела одного из самых загадочных участников группы Дятлова - Семена Золотарева. Будем пока что говорить с приставкой – предположительно – Золотарева, поскольку еще не готова экспертиза ДНК» — "On 12 April at the Ivanovskoye cemetery in Yekaterinburg we carried out the exhumation of the body of ... Semyon Zolotaryov. For now we shall say 'presumably' Zolotaryov, since the DNA test is not ready" (KP 26 April 2018, https://www.kp.ru/daily/26824/3861696/). **Who took part.** KP: «По нашей просьбе эксгумацию проводил судебно-медицинский эксперт Московского бюро судебно-медицинской экспертизы Сергей Никитин. Также на кладбище присутствовала исследователь трагедии, врач Галина Сазонова» — "At our request the exhumation was carried out by Sergey Nikitin, forensic medical expert of the Moscow Bureau of Forensic Medical Expertise. Also present was Galina Sazonova, a physician and researcher of the tragedy" (KP 26 April 2018). Nikitin (Sergey Alekseevich) is «один из наиболее авторитетных российских специалистов по идентификации личности» (MK 28 February 2019, https://www.mk.ru/social/2019/02/28/kriminalisty-skr-raskryli-taynu-gibeli-gruppy-dyatlova.html). Sazonova describes herself as a GP paediatrician of 20 years practising in Vietnam, interested in the case since about 2013 (forum post, 5 May 2018, https://forum.dyatlovpass.com/index.php?topic=156.0). Also present: the Varsegovs, KP photographer Aleksey Bulatov (credited at https://dyatlovpass.com/zolotaryov-exhumation) and a crew of cemetery workers (KP 13 April, which kept Nikitin anonymous). Nikitin says Sazonova laid out the ribs while he handled the skull; Sazonova: «Я помогала только на первом этапе, когда еще очищали кости от земли ... Я не делала экспертную раскладку скелета» — "I helped only at the first stage, cleaning the bones ... I did not do the expert lay-out" (KP 26 April). No relative is reported present.

**Legal basis — a private initiative at the family's request, not a state act (verified).** KP: «родственники Семена попросили нас провести эксгумацию. Насколько непросто было получить разрешение на вскрытие несуществующей (по документам) могилы, то поэма отдельная. Скажем только, что на всю подготовку ушло больше года» — "Semyon's relatives asked us to carry out an exhumation. How hard it was to get permission to open a grave that on paper does not exist is a separate epic; the preparation took over a year." KP thanks «мэрию города Екатеринбурга, лично Евгения Ройзмана» and the municipal funeral service (KP 13 April). Sazonova on the forum: "the main question of the exhumination was identification of body. Not assessment of traumas which regulated by different law ... We hoped to find anything (the best option could be absence the body in the grave or not his body) for transferring this case under the criminal law regulation and reopen the old case" (May 2018). The Dyatlov Memorial Foundation disclaimed involvement on 20 April 2018 and warned the city against «аналогичных подпольных действий в отношении остальных захоронений» — "similar clandestine actions on the other graves" (Uralweb, https://www.uralweb.ru/news/society/488041-na-ivanovskom-kladbishche-ekaterinburga-vskryli-mogilu-odnogo-izdyatlovcev.html). On 1 October 2019 its lawyer Evgeny Chernousov: «Почему-то произошла эксгумация в нарушение АПК, не в рамках уголовного дела, не следователем... По этому поводу мы подписали письмо, обратились к мэру ... почему была проведена эксгумация не в рамках уголовного дела, незаконно» — "an exhumation took place in breach of the procedural code, outside a criminal case, not by an investigator ... we wrote to the mayor asking why it was carried out unlawfully" (RIA, https://ria.ru/20191001/1559315560.html; TASS, https://tass.ru/obschestvo/6949903). Kuntsevich: «по просьбе родных и по инициативе "Комсомольской правды", что незаконно» (Nakanune, https://www.nakanune.ru/news/2019/10/01/22554184/). No authority is reported to have acted on the complaint.

**Which grave, and the doubt.** KP: «Оказалось, что Семена Золотарева вообще нет в списках похороненных на Ивановском кладбище. Могила под обелиском с надписью «Семен Золотарев» ни за кем не числится. То есть, согласно документации, Семена Золотарева на Ивановском кладбище не хоронили!» — "Zolotaryov is not in the lists of those buried at Ivanovskoye at all; the grave under the obelisk is registered to nobody; by the records he was never buried there!" — and KP found no record in any Yekaterinburg cemetery (KP 13 April). Findings: «Могила оказалась завалена не столько землей, сколько большими камнями. От гроба ничего не осталось, даже каких-то истлевших щепок. Ничего не осталось и от одежды покойного, только две пуговицы и две подошвы от обуви, примерно, 42-43 размера. Но кости и череп в сохранности» — "filled with big stones rather than earth; nothing left of the coffin, not even rotten splinters, nor of the clothing — two buttons and two shoe soles, size about 42–43; but the bones and skull are preserved." Nikitin: «Могила оказалась очень своеобразной ... на 90 процентов засыпана крупными кусками гранита» — "very peculiar, 90 per cent filled with granite lumps" — but he thinks almost all graves there are stone-filled because the cemetery is on a hill; skeleton on its back, feet to the east (KP 26 April). Sceptics: Kuntsevich — «Там может быть несколько слоев захоронений ... по некоторым данным, Золотарев был похоронен в цинке ... есть информация, что его реальная могила вообще находится на другом кладбище, под Коуровкой» (Uralweb 20 April 2018); Valentin Degterev — a zinc coffin is documented but was absent, the body seemed buried wrapped in cloth, the soles were «от больничных тапочек», 1980s works moved headstones: «Возник вопрос, а ту ли могилу они вскрыли?» (URA 19 April 2018, https://ura.news/news/1052331761; REN TV 20 April 2018); Vladimir Ankudinov — the zinc coffin may lie deeper and the bones could be an added body (Nakanune 21 May 2018, https://www.nakanune.ru/news/2018/05/21/22508039/); Vladimir Nagaev on the missing zinc coffin (http://zhurnal.lib.ru/n/nagaew_w_m/61.shtml). Sazonova replies that all the ribs were there "without any traces of surgical manipulation", to her surprise (forum, 2018).

## 2. What Nikitin and Sazonova reported about the skeleton

Quotations are from the KP radio transcript of 26 April 2018 (https://www.kp.ru/daily/26824/3861696/; Russian mirror https://dyatlovpass.com/zolotaryov-exhumation-2-ru, English https://dyatlovpass.com/zolotaryov-exhumation-2) unless stated. No written expert report has been published; everything is via KP.

**Remains, sex, age, teeth.** Nikitin: «этот скелет принадлежит мужчине, возраст – в пределах 35-40 лет, расовый тип – европеоидный ... А Золотареву должно было исполниться 38 лет ... Абсолютно точно состояние зубов соответствовало тому, которое было описано при вскрытии в 1959 году. Те же коронки из нержавеющей стали на тех же зубах» — "male, 35–40, Europeoid ... Zolotaryov would have turned 38 ... the teeth corresponded absolutely exactly to the 1959 autopsy: the same stainless-steel crowns on the same teeth." The missing front upper tooth was lost during extraction on 12 April. «Череп поврежден не был. Вся травматизация пришлась на грудную клетку» — "The skull was undamaged; all the trauma fell on the chest." No soft tissue or hair. An old healed mid-shaft fracture of the right fibula («Банальный перелом ... Пулевое ранение – вряд ли»). Tumanov: Vozrozhdenny counted one metal crown more than found, perhaps an amalgam filling (KP 5 June 2018, https://www.kp.ru/daily/26838/3879326/).

**Ribs against the act of 9 May 1959 (л.д. 349–351).** Sazonova read the act — «переломы второго, третьего, четвертого, пятого, шестого ребер справа по окологрудинной и средней подмышечной линии» — and asked how far it matched. Nikitin: «Это совпало практически полностью. За исключением маленькой несущественной поправки. Я бы определил подмышечную линию не как среднюю, а как заднюю подмышечную линию» — "It matched practically completely, except one small, immaterial correction: I would call the axillary line the posterior, not the mid-axillary." (KP's 13 April report had said the injuries «не совсем совпадает» with the act, echoed by Degterev; the transcript supersedes it.) Morphology: «по подмышечной линии ребра сломались в результате чрезмерного сгибания. Это называется сгибательный характер переломов. По окологрудинной линии характер переломов был разгибательный. Это говорит о том, что травматическое воздействие происходило в тот момент, когда человек находился лежа на спине, и подсказывает направление травмирующей массы» — "along the axillary line the ribs broke by excessive bending — flexion fractures; along the parasternal line, extension fractures. This says the man lay on his back when injured and indicates the direction of the injuring mass." Sazonova noted that not all ribs were broken through.

**Injuries the act did not record.** Nikitin: «Некоторые кости не были исследованы. Мы посмотрели правую лопатку, там были три перелома. В акте этого отмечено не было. Я предположил сначала, что это посмертная травма ... Но потом я провел переоценку, ведь левая лопатка оказалась цела. Если бы были посмертные повреждения, логично предположить, что были бы поломаны и левая лопатка, и множественные переломы вообще были бы других костей скелета» — "Some bones were not examined [in 1959]. The right scapula had three fractures, not in the act. I first took them for post-mortem damage [from the granite], then reassessed: the left scapula was intact; post-mortem damage would have broken it and other bones too." Sazonova: «Мы находили гораздо более хрупкие кости. Даже щитовидный хрящ. И сам череп не раздавлен» — "far more fragile bones survived, even the thyroid cartilage; the skull is not crushed." Nikitin: «Ребра были сломаны справа, и правая лопатка. Это укладывается в механизм образования переломов ребер» — "Ribs on the right and the right scapula: that fits the mechanism of the rib fractures." (TV Zvezda's digest wrongly says «левая лопатка», https://tvzvezda.ru/news/201804270002-y615.htm.) Tumanov, from KP's photos and video, added «Есть дефект правой подвздошной кости. Отсутствует фрагмент. Я не могу сказать – этот дефект уже изначально был ... либо образовался при извлечении» — a defect of the right ilium of undetermined origin (KP 5 June 2018). Nothing recorded in the act was found missing from the skeleton, apart from the crown count.

**Mechanism — Nikitin's words.** Load: «зона контакта, воздействия превышала размеры от первого до шестого ребра. Это была большая тяжелая масса. Скорее всего, снег» — "the contact zone exceeded the span from the first to the sixth rib. It was a large heavy mass. Most likely snow." Vitality: «Наличие крови в плевральной полости у Золотарева однозначно говорит о том, что это было прижизненно» (this rests on the 1959 act; no soft tissue survived). Posture: «Однозначно можно сказать, что он находился лежа на спине. И травматическое воздействие происходило спереди назад, может быть, несколько справа налево» — "certainly lying on his back; the impact went front to back, perhaps slightly right to left." Surface, asked if relatively hard: «Да. Маловероятно, что он лежал в снегу» — "Yes. It is unlikely he lay in snow." Impact versus slow load: a blow would leave haemorrhages in muscle and subcutaneous fat, a gradually pressing snow layer hardly would, and (Sazonova) the act and histology did record haemorrhages; Nikitin: «Это говорит о том, что это было резкое сдавление, резкое воздействие. Не постепенное» — "Then it was a sharp compression, a sharp impact, not gradual." Asked about a car: «Автомобиль – это как сравнение ... это было ударное воздействие большой массы» — "the car is a comparison; it was an impact by a large mass." Blast wave: «Исключается полностью». Mobility and place (after the broadcast): «Думаю, мог, но кое-как. А вот Люда Дубинина вряд ли. У нее произошла общая деформация грудной клетки и ее травмы были более сильными» — "I think he could move, but only just; Lyuda Dubinina hardly — her whole chest was deformed"; «мы не можем однозначно сказать, где он получил травму ребер ... В ручье были найдены двое человек с травмами ребер и еще один с травмой черепа. Поэтому нельзя исключить версию, что они выкопали пещеру в районе оврага, но снег обвалился и накрыл их» — "we cannot say where he got the rib injury ... one cannot exclude that they dug a cave near the ravine and the snow collapsed on them." KP promised a fuller study from the photo and video material; none has appeared.

**Nikitin's later formulation (February 2019, MK).** «Останки действительно принадлежат Семену Золотареву. Обнаруженные повреждения точно соответствуют описанию повреждений, которое в 1959 году сделал судебно-медицинский эксперт Борис Возрожденный» — "The remains really are Zolotaryov's; the injuries correspond exactly to Vozrozhdenny's description." Endorsing the Investigative Committee's 2015 review with one correction: «наиболее вероятен следующий механизм произошедшего: они падали в ручей, скорее всего, не одномоментно. Первой упала Дубинина (множественные двусторонние переломы ребер), на нее упал Золотарев (множественные переломы ребер с правой стороны), на него — Колеватов (без повреждений), рядом упал и ударился головой о камень Тибо-Бриньоль (вдавленный перелом черепа). Повреждения у Золотарева, которые я видел лично, и повреждения у остальных ... соответствуют по механизму своего образования этим условиям» — "most probably they fell into the stream, not all at once: Dubinina first, Zolotaryov onto her, Kolevatov (uninjured) onto him, Thibeaux beside them striking his head on a stone. Zolotaryov's injuries, which I saw personally, and the others' fit this mechanism." MK adds that Nikitin finds the tent-slab injury version «неправдоподобной», that Dubinina and Thibeaux could not have descended the slope, and that the injured «могли прожить полчаса, максимум час» (MK 28 February 2019). This shifts from "a large mass, most likely snow" (2018) to bodies falling on one another (2019); MK is the only source for it.

**Sazonova's account.** On air she framed the chest as a structure («конструкционные переломы») and asked whether the load was a slab-like crush or a blow from falling snow. On the dyatlovpass forum (English, May 2018): "We saw the ribs and understood how each rib was fractured. We established 3 fractures of the R scapula (expert didn't describe this injuries in 1959). Sergey Nikitin's conclusion is 'it was one single impact, Zolotarev was laying on the back at that moment (scapula fractures)'. I don't agree))) I suppose its could be two successive blows. But I'm not expert)"; later: "point of force application 'right side of the sternum, distance between 2nd and 5-6th ribs'. Additional signs of localizes area are not injured collarbone, sternum, protruding parts of the scapula ... Can we characterize snow as a blunt object? No ice there ... 4 bodies were fully covered by old heavy 2,5m plast of snow for months, but it not enough to cause even dislocation of broken ribs or secondary fractures. Lung is not damaged (no pneumothorax)" (https://forum.dyatlovpass.com/index.php?topic=156.0).

## 3. Photographic superimposition

Nikitin applied Kubitsky's 1956 method at the cemetery, on the washed and dried skull, against a post-war portrait supplied by the family (https://dyatlovpass.com/semyon-zolotaryov). Nikitin: «Максимально можно оценить около 24 признаков ... Но для опознания достаточно и 12 признаков при условии, что мы определяем пол человека и его возраст. В нашем случае совпали 13 признаков. Это говорит о том, что это останки Семена Золотарева» — "At most about 24 features can be assessed; 12 suffice for identification given sex and age. In our case 13 matched. This says these are Zolotaryov's remains" (KP 26 April 2018). Varsegova on Channel 1: «в 12 основных точках череп совпал с фотографией», with the caveat «эта фотография была сделана в послевоенное время. Мы не знаем, с войны вернулся тот Семен Золотарев или другой человек?» (URA 16 May 2018, https://ura.news/news/1052335076). MK 2019: a «категоричный вывод», still held in February 2019.

## 4. DNA and the identity question

**First test (private laboratory, geneticist Aleksey Garkovenko).** Nuclear DNA was destroyed; one mitochondrial hypervariable region was read and compared with the niece Tatyana Skulbeda (daughter of Semyon's sister Maria). Aired on Channel 1's «На самом деле» on 16 May 2018, printed by KP on 17 May: «По заключению генетика, кровное родство по материнской линии исключено (!)» — "kinship in the maternal line is excluded"; Garkovenko: «в ней было 4 несовпадения с ДНК Татьяны. А все, что больше трех, исключает родство ... общие клетки предполагаемого Семена и его племянницы Татьяны разошлись более 1000 лет назад!» (https://www.kp.ru/daily/26830/3870457/). Grand-niece Yulia Orekhova: «Мы шокированы ... если это не он, тогда нужно писать заявление в следственный комитет».

**Second test (Российский центр судебно-медицинской экспертизы Минздрава РФ, Prof. Pavel Ivanov).** KP 16 July 2018 (https://www.kp.ru/daily/26855/3897903/; English https://dyatlovpass.com/zolotaryov-exhumation-3). Eight samples from the radius; «с двух образцов кости удалось получить одинаковый генотип. И потом его сравнили с генотипом родственников Золотарева»; mitochondrial DNA only; «В заключении написано: «Вероятность родства составляет 99,66-99,84 процента». Примерно один человек на десять тысяч» — "probability of kinship 99.66–99.84 per cent; roughly one person in ten thousand." On the first test: «там очень плохие данные ... выдали за приемлемые то, что было непригодно» — "very bad data ... they passed off unusable data as acceptable." Limit: on the brother hypothesis «Проведенное генетическое исследование не даст ответа. Они родные братья с одинаковой структурой митохондриальной ДНК»; a son's sample and intact nuclear DNA would be needed. KP: «ДНК человека, похороненного под табличкой «Семен Золотарев», совпадает с ДНК родной племянницы Семена Золотарева. Но этот факт не отвергает версию ... что под именем Семена мог скрываться его родной брат Николай ... Поэтому мы пока не можем поставить жирную точку» — "matches the niece's DNA, but does not refute the version that his brother Nikolai hid under Semyon's name, so we cannot yet put a full stop." Nikitin: «первую генетическую экспертизу провел дилетант, а вторую — профессионал» (MK 28 February 2019).

**State of the question to 2026.** MK (February 2019) and dyatlovpass.com («Natalya Varsegova said that there is going to be a third DNA testing in 2020», https://dyatlovpass.com/semyon-zolotaryov) report a further test being prepared; on Channel 1 on 11 February 2019 Varsegova still described the two results as unresolved (https://dyatlovpass.com/dmitriy-borisov-2019-02-11). No third test, no nuclear-DNA test and no further exhumation was found in any source searched to 14 September 2026, and the prosecutors' 2019–2020 check did not address identity (§5). dyatlovpass.com's summary: the superimposition "shows perfect match", the first test excluded kinship, the second «matches the DNA of his niece. But this fact does not exclude the version ... that under the name of Semyon could be buried his brother Nikolay». Net: the body is very probably a maternal-line relative of the Zolotaryovs and anatomically consistent with Semyon (age, dental work, superimposition); identification to the exclusion of a brother has not been made, and the grave is still unregistered.

## 5. Later use of the exhumation

**Eduard Tumanov.** 5 June 2018, from KP's photos and video (https://www.kp.ru/daily/26838/3879326/): «Совпало практически все ... Что касается локализации переломов ребер, то, которое указал Возрожденный, и то, которое было выявлено при эксгумации скелета, полностью совпадают» — "practically everything matched; the rib localisation coincides completely"; the scapula was missed because «не были вскрыты мягкие ткани спины»; «перелом ребер возник в результате компрессии (сдавления) груди в передне-заднем направлении, несколько по диагонали ... каким-то достаточно твердым, тупым предметом с поверхностью, сопоставимой с поверхностью груди. А перелом лопатки больше характерен для травматических воздействий каким-то предметом, чья травмирующая поверхность меньше поверхности лопатки ... не менее двух травматических воздействий» — ribs from front-to-back compression by a chest-sized blunt surface, the scapula from at least two impacts by a smaller object; against Nikitin's hard surface: «Если бы там была твердая поверхность под телом, то сломались бы еще остистые отростки позвонков. Но остистые-то не повреждены» — "a hard surface under the body would have broken the spinous processes, and they are intact"; «если бы мне просто представили описание повреждений ... сказал бы, что человека, скорее всего, переехал автомобиль. Но, учитывая ситуацию в целом, я готов поверить в мистику. Все переломы разные» — "on the description alone I would say a car ran him over; taking the situation as a whole I am ready to believe in mysticism. All the fractures are different"; blast, infrasound, radiation excluded: «Это исключительно действие твердых тупых предметов». KP special page (undated): «удар, сдавление справа-налево твердым тупым предметом с травмирующей поверхностью, сопоставимой по размерам с грудной клеткой Золотарева. Сломать таким образом ребра, падая на ровную твердую поверхность, нереально» (https://www.kp.ru/pereval-dyatlova/versii-gibeli-turistov/smertelnaya-draka/). 26 March 2019: exhumation of all the bodies would show flexion versus extension fractures and so «удар по груди или сдавливание снежной массой» (https://www.kp.ru/daily/26958/4012225/). 23 April 2019: the acts may not record all injuries, «Это показала в том числе эксгумация Семена Золотарева», so one cannot say flatly «что травмы грудной клетки образовались при сдавливании всего каркаса» (https://www.kp.ru/daily/26971.3/4026055/). 14 July 2020, on the prosecutors' experts: «Исследовались ли ткани спины, конечностей, кости таза? ... Подтверждением [тому] была эксгумация Семена Золотарева, когда при осмотре останков обнаружились повреждения, которые не были описаны в судебно-медицинском акте» (https://www.kp.ru/daily/27154.5/4251772/).

**The prosecutors' check (2019–2020) did not use it.** Kuryakov, 4 February 2019: «Если экспертам для ответов на наши вопросы станет необходима эксгумация, то будем работать с родственниками, чтобы получить от них соответствующее разрешение» (66.ru, https://66.ru/news/society/219216/). Results, 11 July 2020: injuries «характерны для телесных повреждений групп туристов, которые попадают в лавину»; Zolotaryov's ribs explained by a tennis-ball analogy («травмы причинены давлением обтекающей силы»), no reference to 2018 (RIA, https://ria.ru/20200711/1574210659.html). Kuryakov, Interfax, 22 July 2020: the Sverdlovsk bureau's experts «опирались на результаты девяти экспертиз, проведенных в 1959 году, современные исследования и медицинскую литературу»; «По их словам, эксгумация останков бесполезна, так как с момента захоронения тел прошло уже очень много времени. Следовательно, будет очень сложно отделить повреждения, которые были на костях скелета в 1959 году, от тех, которые были получены ими за годы нахождения в земле» — "in their words exhumation is useless: too much time has passed to separate 1959 injuries from damage acquired in the ground" (https://www.interfax-russia.ru/ural/exclusives/rukovoditel-oficialnoy-gruppy-po-proverke-prichin-gibeli-turistov-na-perevale-dyatlova-andrey-kuryakov-my-poluchili-otvety-na-vse-voprosy).

**Others.** Nikitin called the Investigative Committee's 2015 review (Solovyov/Shkryabach, the four fell into a snow grotto over the stream) «полновесным и серьезным» (MK 28 February 2019). Evgeny Buyanov: no comment on the exhumation located; his 2023 anniversary report only complains that the prosecutors ignored his own «экспертизу механизма слома рёбер Дубининой и Золотарёва» (https://www.mountain.ru/legacy-material.php?article_id=10069). Alexey Rakitin: no commentary located (searches of 14 September 2026). Nikolai Tarasov (Kyshtym trauma surgeon) called for «окончательная, более тщательная экспертиза» after the conflicting DNA results (AIF 25 February 2019, https://chel.aif.ru/society/novye_tayny_gruppy_dyatlova_vrach_uveren_chto_nuzhna_povtornaya_eksgumaciya).

**Other exhumations since 1959 — none (verified).** No source reports any other exhumation. The Foundation asked the city in October 2019 to forbid exhumations outside a criminal case (TASS); the prosecutors declined one in 2020 (Interfax); the relatives' June 2026 demand for a new criminal case envisages exhuming all nine bodies, with no reported answer by 14 September 2026 (URA, https://ura.news/news/1053098213). Tatyana Perminova, October 2019: «Если это будет крайне необходимо ... родственники не будут против, потому что истина должна быть определена» (RIA, 1 October 2019).

## 6. Assessment — what 2018 adds to "tent versus ravine", and what it cannot settle

What it adds. (1) The 1959 act is confirmed on the ribs — II–VI right, parasternal and axillary lines, Nikitin moving the lateral line to the posterior axillary; the crown discrepancy is trivial. (2) The act is shown to be incomplete: three ante-mortem fractures of the right scapula (Nikitin, Tumanov and Sazonova agree they exist) and possibly a right iliac defect (Tumanov); the back was evidently never opened in 1959, so the acts of Dubinina and Thibeaux may under-record as well. (3) Bone morphology fixes the geometry: flexion fractures laterally and extension fractures parasternally mean front-to-back compression of a supine chest by a surface wider than ribs I–VI (Nikitin) or "comparable to the chest" (Tumanov), slightly right to left; both exclude a blast wave, and Tumanov excludes a fall onto a flat hard surface as the cause of the rib pattern. (4) "Sudden, not gradual" rests on the 1959 haemorrhage record, not on bone. (5) A broad, sudden, front-to-back load on a supine man is what a snow-loaded tent roof and a collapsing den or fall in the ravine would both produce, so the exhumation does not discriminate between them. Nikitin's two placements — "most likely snow" (2018) and "they fell into the stream, one on another" (2019) — both have the man on his back; his 2019 view, with Zolotaryov able to move only «кое-как» and Dubinina hardly at all, favours the ravine, in line with Vozrozhdenny's mobility statements (л.д. 381–383) rather than adding an independent argument.

What it cannot settle. The scapula: one impact on a hard surface (Nikitin), at least two blows with a narrower object and an argument from intact spinous processes against a hard surface (Tumanov), or two successive blows (Sazonova, "not expert") — a fall onto stream-bed rocks, a den collapse onto uneven ground and a blow are all compatible, and nobody has measured the fractures. Time and place: no bone evidence dates or locates the injuries; Nikitin said so himself. Load: nobody converted the pattern into a mass, height or velocity; Sazonova's point that months under 2.5 m of snow did not displace the fractures is an observation, not a calculation. Identity: mitochondrial DNA cannot separate Semyon from a brother, the superimposition used a post-war photograph, and no nuclear-DNA test has been reported. Evidential status: the exhumation was outside any criminal procedure, no written expert report exists in the public record, and the prosecutors deemed exhumation useless while KP's team found the bones "in excellent condition" (Sazonova). And only one of the three ravine victims has been examined; Dubinina and Thibeaux, whose injuries carry the real weight in the tent-versus-ravine argument, remain unexhumed.
