**Conventions.** "sh." = лист (sheet) as numbered in the transcription; "об." = оборот (reverse). RU quotations are copied from the site's Russian transcription, which preserves the typists' spelling errors and marks the transcriber's notes as "прим. сост.". English renderings in the "EN" column are my own literal translations unless labelled "site EN". Where the site's English page differs materially from the Russian, the Note column says so. Site commentary (introductions, editorial remarks) is either ignored or explicitly marked "site opinion". Numbers are given exactly as in the document; conflicting witnesses are listed as separate facts (see the companion file case-file-scene-conflicts.md).

## Topic 1. The tent: location, pitching, condition, contents

| No. | Fact | Source | RU original | EN rendering | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| F1 | The camp site was recorded as lying on the north-eastern slope of height 1079 at the sources of the Auspiya river, 300 m from the summit, on a slope of 30°. | sh. 2, Protocol of discovery of the camp site; Tempalov; witnesses Maslennikov, Brusnitsyn, Sharavin, Kurikov; 28.02.1959 | «Место ночлега находится на Северо-Восточном склоне высоты 1079 в истоках реки Ауспии. 30°» | "The camp site is on the north-eastern slope of height 1079 at the sources of the Auspiya river. The camp site is 300 m from the summit of mountain 1079, at a slope of the mountain of 30°" | 30° is the steepest figure in the file; all later witnesses give 15-25° (see F59, F67, F15). |
| F2 | The site was a platform levelled out of the snow with 8 pairs of skis laid on its floor. | sh. 2, same | «Место ночлега представляет из себя площадку, выравненную от снега, на дне которой уложены 8 пар лыж» | "The camp site is a platform levelled from snow, on the bottom of which 8 pairs of skis are laid" | Maslennikov (F10) and Tempalov (F25) later say 9 pairs under the floor. |
| F3 | The tent was stretched on ski poles and fixed with ropes. | sh. 2, same | «Палатка растянута на лыжных палках, закреплена веревками» | "The tent is stretched on ski poles, fastened with ropes" | — |
| F4 | Inside: 9 backpacks on the floor, quilted jackets and storm jackets on top of them, 9 pairs of boots at the head end, men's trousers, three pairs of valenki (felt boots), warm fur jackets. посланы сверху телогрейки, штурмовки, в головах 9 пар ботинок, обнаружены также брюки мужские, также валенки три пары, также обнаружены теплые меховые куртки» | "9 backpacks with various personal items … quilted jackets and storm jackets laid on top, at the head end 9 pairs of boots, men's trousers also found, also three pairs of valenki, also warm fur jackets" | Site EN renders «9 пар ботинок» as "9 pairs of felt boots", conflating leather ботинки with валенки. Every later witness counts 8 pairs of boots (F10, F25, F34). |
| F5 | Also in the tent: a stove, axes, a saw, food (rusks in two bags, condensed milk, sugar, concentrates and other products).
| F6 | The protocol states expressly that no body was found in the tent. | sh. 2, same | «Ни одного трупа в палатке не обнаружено.» | "Not a single corpse was found in the tent." | — |
| F7 | The whole discovery protocol is a short document written on 28.02.1959, i.e. two days after Slobtsov and Sharavin found the tent (26.02) and a day after the tent had been partly emptied by searchers. | sh. 2 (date); sh. 298-299 Slobtsov (26.02 discovery); sh. 365 Brusnitsyn | — | — | Context for why item counts differ between documents. |
| F8 | Maslennikov: the tent was 150 m from the crest of the spur (at an altitude of 900 m) of height 1079. | sh. 70, interrogation of E. P. Maslennikov (search leader), by Ivanov, 10.03.1959 | «Палатка находилась в 150 м от гребня отрога (на высоте 900 м) высоты «1079».» | "The tent was 150 m from the crest of the spur (at an altitude of 900 m) of height 1079." | Tempalov (F23) repeats 150 m; sh. 2 says 300 m from the summit (different reference point). |
| F9 | Maslennikov: the tent was stretched on skis and poles driven into the snow; its entrance faced south; the guy lines on the south side were intact, those on the north side torn off, so the whole second half of the tent was buried under snow; there was not much snow, only what the February blizzards had blown in. | "The tent was stretched on skis and poles driven into the snow, its entrance faced south and on that side the guy lines were intact, while the guy lines of the north side were torn off and therefore the whole second half of the tent turned out to be covered with snow. There was not much snow, just what the blizzards had blown in during February." | Key statement on amount of snow on the tent (contrast Slobtsov F39, Bardin/Shuleshko F16). |
| F10 | Maslennikov: at the tent were an ice axe and a spare pair of skis; inside 9 backpacks, 10 pairs of skis (9 of them under the floor), 8 pairs of boots, 3.5 pairs of valenki. | sh. 70, same | «ледоруб, запасная пара лыж … 9 рюкзаков, 10 пар лыж, из них 9 под дном палатки, 8 пар ботинок, 3,5 пары валенок» | — | — |
| F11 | Maslennikov: 10-15 m from the tent, downhill, lay slippers, socks, Dyatlov's fur jacket and a storm jacket. | sh. 70, same | «В 10-15 м от палатки … |
| F12 | Maslennikov: on top of the tent lay a Chinese flashlight, switched on but not burning. | sh. 70, same | «На палатке лежал фонарик китайский в зажженном состоянии (но не горел)» | "On the tent lay a Chinese flashlight in switched-on state (but it was not burning)" | Slobtsov (F40) and Tempalov (F24) describe the switch state differently. |
| F13 | Maslennikov: the tent was dragged 600-700 m to the helicopter landing site after the inspection. | sh. 70, same | «палатка была перетащена на 600-700 м к месту посадки вертолета» (paraphrase) | — | Explains why later witnesses (Atmanaki, Sogrin) saw only the pit. |
| F14 | Maslennikov: the tent was set up "very firmly, by all the rules, taking the strong wind into account". | sh. 170, radiogram Maslennikov to Sulman/Ivanov, 01.03.1959 (see also sh. 70) | «Палатка установлена очень прочно по всем правилам … с учетом сильного ветра» | "The tent was set up very firmly by all the rules … taking the strong wind into account" | — |
| F15 | Bardin/Shuleshko report: the tent stood on the slope of the spur of mountain 1079, which at that place runs at an angle of 18-20°; the entrance faced the pass. | sh. 34, "Information on the expedition of the Dyatlov group", K. Bardin and E. Shuleshko, c. 10.03.1959 | «на склоне отрога гора 1079, идущего в этом месте под углом в 18-20°. | "on the slope of the spur of mountain 1079, running at this place at an angle of 18-20°. The entrance of the tent faced the pass." | — |
| F16 | Bardin/Shuleshko: the tent was almost buried in snow; only one ridge end (конек) of the tent, on the entrance side, stuck out of the snow; the entrance was open and sheets protruded from it. Вход в палатку был раскрыт, из него торчали простыни» | "The tent was almost covered with snow. One ridge end of the tent, on the entrance side, stuck out of the snow. The entrance to the tent was open, sheets stuck out of it" | Site EN: "Sticking out from the snow was a propping pole on one side of the entrance" — «конек» is the ridge (peak) end, not a pole. |
| F17 | Bardin/Shuleshko: the uphill slope of the tent was torn near the entrance, with a fur jacket sticking out of the hole; the downhill slope was "torn to shreds"; in front of the entrance lay a pair of tied skis. | "The slope facing the mountainside was torn nearer the entrance and a fur jacket stuck out of the hole. The slope facing downhill was torn to shreds. In front of the entrance lay a pair of tied skis." | — |
| F18 | Bardin/Shuleshko, layout: at the entrance a stove, buckets (in one a flask with alcohol), saw, axe; cameras; at the far end a bag with maps and documents, Dyatlov's camera, a tin with money, Kolmogorova's diary, storm jackets of Dyatlov and Kolevatov; in a corner a bag of rusks and a bag of cereal. | sh. 34, same | (list; RU as transcribed) | — | — |
| F19 | Bardin/Shuleshko: 2 pairs of boots lay on the right, 6 pairs by the opposite wall; 3.5 pairs of valenki somewhere in the middle. | sh. 34, same | «Где-то в середине палатки были найдены валенки 3 с половиной пары.» | "Somewhere in the middle of the tent 3 and a half pairs of valenki were found." | — |
| F20 | Bardin/Shuleshko: next to the rusks lay a log taken from the previous night's camp. | sh. 34, same | «Возле сухарей лежало полено, взятое с места прошлой ночевки.» | "Next to the rusks lay a log taken from the place of the previous overnight camp." | Lebedev (F49) places a "чурбачок" outside at the far end. |
| F21 | Bardin/Shuleshko: backpacks were spread at the very bottom of the tent, quilted jackets and blankets on them, warm things on top. | — | — |
| F22 | Bardin/Shuleshko (search report): Dyatlov's body was visible from under the snow; Kolmogorova lay under 10 cm of snow 850 m from the tent; Slobodin was found on 5 March under 15 cm of snow. | sh. 34-35, 38, same | «Колмогорова … |
| F23 | Tempalov (testimony): the tent was 150 m from the crest of the spur, entrance to the south; the south guy lines were intact, the north ones torn; an ice axe and spare skis stood at the tent. | sh. 310, interrogation of prosecutor V. I. Tempalov, by Ivanov, 18.04.1959 | «Палатка находилась в 150 м от гребня отрога … |
| F24 | Tempalov: a Chinese flashlight "in unlit/switched-off state" lay at the tent. | sh. 310, same | «китайский фонарик в незажженном состоянии» | "a Chinese flashlight in non-lit state" | Contrast F12. |
| F25 | Tempalov: found in the tent 9 backpacks, 9 pairs of skis all of which were under the floor, 8 pairs of boots, 3.5 pairs of valenki, quilted jackets, many rusks, half a sack of sugar, a large amount of concentrates, cereals. | sh. 310, same | «В палатке было найдено 9 рюкзаков, 9 пар лыж, из них все они находились под дном палатки, 8 пар ботинок, 3,5 пары валенок, телогрейки и много сухарей, полмешка сахара, большое количество концентратов, каши» | "9 backpacks, 9 pairs of skis all of which were under the floor of the tent, 8 pairs of boots, 3.5 pairs of valenki, quilted jackets and many rusks, half a sack of sugar, a large quantity of concentrates, cereals" | — |
| F26 | Tempalov: the tent was snowed over; it stood on a level platform dug out by the students; it was torn in its middle part on the windward side. | "The tent was covered with snow. It had been set up on a level platform dug out by the students. The tent was torn in the middle part on the windward side." | — |
| F27 | Tempalov: in the right corner by the entrance lay cans of condensed milk, about 100 g of sliced lard (сало), rusks, sugar, an empty flask smelling of alcohol or vodka, a flask of frozen cocoa, and a big knife next to the lard. нож» | "condensed milk, 100 grams of sliced lard, rusks, sugar, an empty flask from spirit or vodka, the smell was perceptible … a knife" | — |
| F28 | Tempalov: he formed the impression that the students had drunk vodka and had a snack. | "I got the impression that the students drank vodka and had a bite." | Autopsies (forensic notes) found no alcohol; this is Tempalov's inference only. |
| F29 | Tempalov: the boots lay in the tent next to where the students' feet would be; there were 7 valenki; the stove was in its case in the middle of the tent. печка» | "The boots were right there in the tent, placed near the students' feet as it seemed to me, and there were 7 valenki. In its case … the stove" | 7 valenki = 3.5 pairs. Stove position conflicts with Lebedev/Brusnitsyn (F49, F62). |
| F30 | Tempalov: near the tent there was an old trace of someone urinating; no signs of a struggle anywhere. Этот след старый» ; «никаких признаков борьбы» (paraphrase) | "a trace of one of the students having relieved himself (urinated). This trace is old" | Urine trace also reported by Slobtsov (F42) and Atmanaki (F56). |
| F31 | Tempalov: the descent from the tent is steep and over crust (dense snow), stretching 2.5 km; there is no forest on the mountain slope except sparse birches nearer the river. | "The descent from the tent is steep and over crust (dense snow). The descent stretches 2.5 km. There is no forest on the mountain slope, except rare birches closer to the river." | Site EN inserts "difficult even" ("The descent from the tent is steep, difficult even on the crust"), which is not in the RU. |
| F32 | Chernyshev: the tent stood 100-150 m north-east of the summit; it looked snowbound; the entrance side was held on its central peg and well roped; the other end stood on its pole but the middle was heaped with snow, the windward slopes badly torn, and the edge had sunk under the snow; one could not get inside, everything was covered. | sh. 89, interrogation of Capt. A. A. Chernyshev (Ivdellag), by Ivanov, 11.03.1959 | (paraphrase; RU as transcribed on sh. 89) | — | — |

| F37 | Chernyshev: the slope above the tent is bare. | sh. 91, same | «Склон выше палатки голый» | "The slope above the tent is bare" | Relevant to snow supply above tent. |
| F38 | Slobtsov (co-discoverer, 26.02): the entrance of the tent protruded from the snow, the rest was under snow; around the tent ski poles and one spare pair of skis stood in the snow. | sh. 298, interrogation of B. D. Brusnitsyn, 15.05.1959 | (paraphrase) | — | Explains the ice axe later listed among labaz items (sh. 18). |
| F45 | Lebedev: only the front part of the tent was not buried; an ice axe stood by the tent, which Slobtsov and Sharavin used to try to dig out the buried part; they found a cut in one slope; they took the ice axe, a camera, a diary (Slobodin's, he thinks) and the Chinese flashlight. … захватив ледоруб, фотоаппарат, дневник (кажется, Слободина), китайский фонарик» | "They also discovered a cut in one slope of the tent. … taking the ice axe, a camera, a diary (Slobodin's, it seems), the Chinese flashlight" | — |

| F48 | Lebedev: the stove in its case stood near the entrance with the pipes inside it, i.e. it had not been lit. | sh. 314, same | (paraphrase) | — | Sogrin (F70) agrees the stove was not used. |
| F49 | Lebedev: a small log (чурбачок) lay outside at the far end of the tent; axes and a saw at the entrance; Dyatlov's things at the far end, then Slobodin's, then Kolevatov's. | sh. 314-315, same | «чурбачок» | "a small log/chunk of wood" | Cf. F20. |

Radiogram sh. 191 mentions "a piece of a broken ski" 20 m from the tent (F84). |
| F52 | Lebedev: the tent was torn in one place and the tear pinned with a safety pin (an old repair). | sh. 315, same | (paraphrase) | — | — |
| F53 | Atmanaki (searcher, at the pit on 7-8 March): the tent stood side-on to the slope with the entrance to the east; the entrance was unbuttoned but half blocked by buckets, the stove and backpacks, so that at first it seemed the people had tried to barricade the entrance or weigh the corner down against the wind. | sh. 214-215, interrogation of G. V. Atmanaki, 07-08.04.1959 | «Палатка стояла боком к склону входом на восток, вход был расстегнут но завален наполовину вёдрами, печкой и рюкзаками, так что вначале появилась мысль, что люди питались забаррикадировать вход» | "The tent stood sideways to the slope with the entrance to the east, the entrance was unbuttoned but half blocked with buckets, the stove and backpacks, so at first the thought arose that the people had tried to barricade the entrance" | Entrance direction "east" conflicts with "south" (F9, F23, F59). |
| F54 | Atmanaki: the tent stood on laid-out skis, guy lines tied to ski poles, most of them undamaged; a flashlight was found on the slope of the tent; a little below it a discarded ice axe; a pair of skis stuck in the snow. На скате палатки нашли фонарик, а немного ниже брошены ледоруб, здесь же стояла воткнутая в снег пара лыж» | "The tent stood on laid-out skis, the guy lines tied to ski poles, most of them not damaged. On the slope of the tent a flashlight was found, and a little lower an ice axe thrown down, and here stood a pair of skis stuck in the snow" | — |
| F55 | Atmanaki: the leeward (north) side of the tent was torn through, blankets and a quilted jacket protruding; the other slope was buried by drifted snow lying on the floor. | sh. 214-215, same | «заветренная (северная) сторона палатки была разорва[на]» | "the leeward (northern) side of the tent was torn" | Atmanaki calls the north side leeward; Maslennikov/Tempalov call it the torn windward/north side. |
| F56 | Atmanaki: no tracks remained around the tent because the searchers, digging it out, threw much snow about which the wind later removed; the discarded flashlight and urine traces suggested someone had gone out at night. | sh. 215, same | «Брошенный фонарик и следы мочи у палатки наводили на мысль, что кто-то выходил ночью наружу» | "The discarded flashlight and traces of urine by the tent suggested that someone had gone outside at night" | — |
| F57 | Atmanaki: a roll of film was found about 15 m below the tent. | sh. 215, same | (paraphrase) | — | — |
| F58 | Atmanaki: climbing to the tent site later, the searchers satisfied themselves that "in any wind one can hold on the slope and come back". | sh. 215, same | «при любом ветре можно удержаться на склоне и вернуться назад» | "in any wind one can hold on on the slope and return back" | Direct statement against the "blown away" hypothesis. |

Snow depth up to 1.5 metres." | — |
| F60 | Brusnitsyn: a shallow pit had been dug for the tent; 8 pairs of skis lay bindings down. | sh. 366, same | «8 пар лыж креплениями вниз» (paraphrase) | — | Agrees with sh. 2 (8 pairs), against 9 (F10, F25). |
| F61 | Brusnitsyn: thanks to the dense snow cover the tent had been set up very firmly; everything was buried under already-settled snow except the south ridge end, fixed on a ski pole and tied to a pair of skis; there was no pole under the north ridge end. | "Thanks to the dense snow cover it had been possible to set the tent up very firmly. Everything was covered with already-compacted snow except the southern ridge end, fixed on a ski pole and tied to a pair of skis. Under the northern ridge end there was no pole at all." | — |
| F62 | Brusnitsyn: ten people dug the tent out without any system; blankets were frozen into a ball; buckets, the stove, 2-3 bags of rusks, boots were pulled out; layout was backpacks, then 2-3 blankets, then jackets; buckets, stove, axe and saw to the right of the entrance; rusks, sugar, condensed milk and an open bag of loin (корейка) also near the entrance. | sh. 366-367, same | (paraphrase) | — | — |
| F63 | Brusnitsyn: most boots lay on the left (mountain) side, two pairs in the right middle; "apparently at the moment of the incident the group was in the last stage of changing clothes and preparing for the night"; loin rinds in the near half; rusks scattered over the whole tent. | sh. 367, same | «Видимо группа к моменту происшествия находилась в последней стадии переодевания и подготовки к ночлегу.» | "Apparently at the moment of the incident the group was in the last stage of changing clothes and preparing for the night." | — |
| F64 | Brusnitsyn: on top of all the things lay a ski pole cut into several pieces, on which apparently the north ridge end had been fixed. | sh. 367, same | «Поверх всех вещей лежала разрезанная на несколько кусков лыжная палка, на ней, повидимому был укреплен северный конек» | "On top of all the things lay a ski pole cut into several pieces; on it, apparently, the northern ridge end had been fixed" | Cf. F51 (Lebedev). |
| F65 | Brusnitsyn: the first stone ridge below the tent is an almost horizontal platform (up to 5°); right at the tent the slope reaches 20°. 20°» | "an almost horizontal platform (up to 5°) … right at the tent, where the steepness of the slope reaches 20°" | — |
| F66 | Sogrin (at the tent site on 4 March with Akselrod, Korolyov and three Muscovites): "the tent was pitched by all the rules of hiking and mountaineering. The slope on which the tent stood presents no danger whatsoever. Steepness of the slope 15-18°." 15-18°.» | "the tent was pitched by all hiking and mountaineering rules. The slope on which the tent stood presents no danger at all. Steepness of the slope 15-18°." | The lowest slope-angle figure in the file. |
| F67 | Sogrin: several chains of tracks below the tent show the group ran and could not have "rolled" down; a person falling would fly no more than 10-20 m; returning barefoot from the cedar would have been impossible. | sh. 334, same | «группа бежала» (paraphrase of the passage) | — | — |
| F68 | Sogrin: methods such as trench-digging were unacceptable in the search "because here there was neither an avalanche nor a snow collapse/slide". | sh. 335, same | «здесь не было ни лавины, ни снежного обвала» | "here there was neither an avalanche nor a snow collapse" | Site EN: "there was no avalanche, no snowfall" — «обвал» means collapse/slide, not snowfall. The only explicit avalanche statement in the file. |
| F69 | Sogrin: the stove had not been used and no one was on duty that night. | sh. 337, same | (paraphrase) | — | — |
| F70 | Akselrod: "the slope as such played no role whatsoever in their death" (he deliberately avoids the word "slope"); pitching on a bare place was, in his view, justified. | sh. 324, interrogation of M. A. Akselrod, 24.04.1959 | «я сознательно избегаю слово склон, т.к. считаю, что склон, как таковой, не сыграл никакой роли в их гибели» | "I deliberately avoid the word slope, because I consider that the slope as such played no role whatsoever in their death" | — |
| F71 | Akselrod: the slopes of the tent were tightly stretched, backpacks laid on the windward side inside, and a "barricade" of the stove and backpacks made at the entrance so it would not blow in; only a few toggles were open at the entrance. | "The slopes are tightly stretched, backpacks laid inside on the windward side, at the entrance a 'barricade' of the stove and backpacks was made so that it would not blow in." | — |
| F72 | Akselrod: the cut through the tent was made "if not at the first attempt then at the third"; he, Sogrin, Korolyov, Baskin and Shuleshko were unanimous that the group would have returned to the tent in any wind had they had one chance. | sh. 325-326, same | «не с первого раза, так с третьего» | "if not the first time, then the third" | — |
| F73 | Churkina act No. 199: the tent, received on 3 April 1959, is made of thick cotton fabric of protective colour; total length along the ridge 4 m 33 cm, length of one slope 1 m 14 cm, total width about 2 m; height depends on how it is pitched. | sh. 303, Act of forensic (criminalistic) expertise No. 199, senior expert-criminalist G. E. Churkina, 16.04.1959 | «Общая длина палатка /по конку/ равна 4м.33см, длина едного скоса-1м.14см, общая ширина примерно 2м.» | "The total length of the tent (along the ridge) equals 4 m 33 cm, the length of one slope 1 m 14 cm, the total width approximately 2 m." | — |
| F74 | Churkina: the entrance (left end) consists of two unsewn halves draped with a white sheet; at the right end a small round sewn sleeve for ventilation; loops with cords along the sides for fixing; there is no cord at the end of the right ridge; the tent is fairly worn. | "Damage No. 1 has the shape of a broken straight line, its total length is 32 cm. Above it there is a small puncture of the fabric of 2.2 cm." | — |
| F78 | Churkina: damages No. 2 and 3 are of uneven arc shape, approximate lengths 89 cm and 42 cm; their exact length cannot be determined because on the right edge of No. 2 and both edges of No. 3 flaps of fabric are missing and the cuts may have continued further. | "The approximate length of the said damages is 89 cm and 42 cm. It is impossible to determine the length of these damages precisely … it is not excluded that they continued further." | Site EN omits the sentence "It is impossible to determine the length exactly". |
| F79 | Churkina: microscopic examination (magnification 0.6x to 56x) of the cut edges showed, on the inner side of the tent, surface damage in the form of minor punctures, half-cut threads and very thin scratches; all scratches and punctures are straight and lie near the cut edges. | sh. 303 об.-304, same | «с внутренней стороны палатки в участках близлежащих к краям разрезов имеются поверхностные повреждения ткани в виде незначительных проколов, надрезов нитей ткани и очень тонких царапин» | "on the inner side of the tent, in areas adjacent to the edges of the cuts, there are surface damages of the fabric in the form of minor punctures, partial cuts of threads and very thin scratches" | — |

| F83 | Radiogram, 1 March (Maslennikov): the tent was pitched "in the most dangerous place for wind; here is the strongest wind"; a dressed person may have gone out to relieve himself and been carried off; those who jumped out at the shout were also carried off; it was impossible to climb back from fifty metres because the tent was torn. Подняться обратно метров с пятидесяти было невозможно так как палатка была разорвана» | "Possibly someone dressed went out to relieve himself and was blown away. Those who jumped out at the shout were also blown away; the tent is set up in the most dangerous place for wind, here the wind is strongest. To climb back from some fifty metres was impossible because the tent was torn" | Hypothesis stated on 1 March; "all agree with this version of the catastrophe" («Таким вариантом катастрофы согласны все»). |

| F88 | In May, at the site where the Dyatlov tent had stood, an ebonite knife sheath and a white-metal tablespoon were found under the snow. | sh. 341 and 343, Protocol of inspection of the place of discovery of bodies, Tempalov, 06.05.1959 | «под снегом на месте обнаружения палатки группы Дятлова найдены эбонитовые ножны для ножа и столовая ложка из белого металла» | "under the snow at the place of discovery of the Dyatlov group tent an ebonite knife sheath and a tablespoon of white metal were found" | The second copy (sh. 343) says "эбонитовые клепанные ножны" (riveted ebonite sheath). |
| F89 | Ivanov's resolution: the tent and everything in it were well preserved; inspection showed it was pitched correctly and provided the hikers with a night's lodging; 2 blankets were spread out, the rest crumpled and frozen; loin rinds lay on a blanket. | sh. 385, Resolution to terminate the case, Ivanov, 28.05.1959 | «Осмотр палатки показал, что она поставлена правильно и обеспечивала ночлег туристам. | "Inspection of the tent showed that it was pitched correctly and provided the hikers with a place to sleep. In the tent 2 blankets were spread, backpacks, storm jackets and trousers." | — |
| F90 | Ivanov's resolution: the tent was abandoned suddenly and simultaneously by all the hikers; the leeward side of the tent, where the hikers had their heads, was cut from the inside in two places, on sections allowing a person to exit freely. подветренная сторона палатки, куда туристы располагались головами, оказалась разрезана изнутри в двух местах, на участках, обеспечивающих свободный выход человека через эти разрезы» | "the tent was abandoned suddenly and simultaneously by all the hikers … the leeward side of the tent, where the hikers lay with their heads, turned out to be cut from the inside in two places, on sections ensuring free exit of a person through these cuts" | "Two places" vs Churkina's three cuts (F76). |

| F102 | Bardin/Shuleshko: from about 5 March the weather turned sunny and an ice crust began to form on all slopes, causing frequent falls; soldier Solovyov was injured on 9 March. | sh. 39, Bardin/Shuleshko | (paraphrase) | — | — |
| F103 | Bardin/Shuleshko: systematic probing used 1.5 m probes at 6-8 pokes per m2 over about 30,000 m2. | sh. 38, Bardin/Shuleshko | (paraphrase) | — | Ortyukov (sh. 308) gives "about 1500 ha triple-probed", an inconsistent figure. |
| F104 | Radiogram, 1 March: probes of 2.5 m are needed; mine detectors useless. | sh. 166, 178, radiograms, 01.03 and 03.03.1959 | (paraphrase) | — | — |
| F105 | Tempalov: the descent from the tent is over crust (dense snow) for 2.5 km. | sh. 311 об.-312, Tempalov | «по насту (плотному снегу)» | "over crust (dense snow)" | Repeats F31 for the snow topic. |

## Topic 3. Footprints below the tent

| No. | Fact | Source | RU original | EN rendering | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| F106 | Tempalov: 50-60 m below the tent he found 8 pairs of human footprints, examined them carefully, but they were deformed by winds and temperature fluctuations; he could not establish a ninth track "and it was not there". | "8 pairs of human tracks, which I examined carefully, but they were deformed owing to winds and temperature fluctuations. I could not establish a ninth track and it was not there." | Strongest statement that only 8 tracks existed. |
| F107 | Tempalov: he photographed the tracks; they went down from the tent; "the tracks showed me that the people walked at a normal pace down the mountain"; they were visible only over a 50 m stretch, beyond which the snow deepened. Следы были видны только на 50 метровом участке» | "The tracks were photographed by me. They went down from the tent. The tracks showed me that the people walked at a normal pace down the mountain. The tracks were visible only on a 50-metre stretch" | "Normal pace" (not running). Other witnesses trace the tracks 500-1000 m (F110, F113, F116, F118). |
| F108 | Maslennikov (additional interrogation): the tracks could be seen over a limited stretch; only in one place were all seen at once, before and after that the tracks of 3 to 5 people or fewer; 8 pairs of tracks, the 9th pair was disputed because the tracks "ran onto" one another; he inclines to think all 9 pairs were there, as did the other searchers. Я склонен считать, что здесь были все 9 пар следов» | "and only in one place all at once, before and after that the tracks of 3 to 5 people or even fewer are distinguishable. 8 pairs of tracks, the 9th pair was disputed because the tracks 'ran onto' each other. I am inclined to think that all 9 pairs of tracks were there" | — |
| F109 | Maslennikov (10 March): "There is no doubt that the group was deliberately going away from the tent. We found the tracks of almost the whole group." | "That the group was deliberately leaving the tent there is no doubt. We found the tracks of almost the whole group." | — |
| F110 | Chernyshev: starting 30-40 m from the tent clear, well-distinguishable human footprints were found; they ran in parallel chains close to one another, "as if the people walked holding on to each other"; 6 or 7 pairs went from the tent down into the hollow and about 20 m to the left another 2 pairs; the two groups merged after 30-40 m. | "Starting 30-40 metres from the tent, obvious, clearly distinguishable footprints of people were found. The tracks ran in parallel chains close to each other, as if the people walked holding on to one another. … 6 or 7 pairs of tracks we counted from the tent down into the hollow, and to the left of them, about 20 m, went another …" | Site EN of this passage is garbled in places (see conflicts file). |
| F111 | Chernyshev: the tracks vanished on stone ridges, reappeared, and were then lost; toes were imprinted (barefoot or in one cotton sock); the tracks stood up "in the form of raised columns" because the snow under a footprint is compressed and not blown away while the surrounding snow is; the lowest track was in a boot, heel well imprinted. Очень хорошо отпечатался каблук и пяточная часть» | "they are visible not as depressions but as raised little columns - the snow under a footprint remains compressed and is not blown away, while around the tracks the snow is blown away … Lowest of all one track in a boot was visible. The heel and heel-part were imprinted very well" | Classic description of pedestal ("column") footprints. |
| F112 | Chernyshev: the tracks led toward the forest; no other human or animal tracks except one dog track; "Perhaps the wind drove them on, but it did not roll them over the snow - in that case no tracks would have remained." | sh. 91, same | «Может быть их подгонял ветер, но он их не катил по снегу – в этом случае следов бы не осталось.» | "Perhaps the wind pushed them along, but it did not roll them over the snow - in that case no tracks would have remained." | — |
| F113 | Atmanaki: 20-30 m below the tent a chain of tracks led toward the Lozva valley, well preserved; at first the tracks went in two groups, then merged, and were visible over 700-800 m, after which they vanished on fresh snow. | "About 20-30 m below the tent a file of tracks, well preserved up to that time, led into the Lozva valley; at first the tracks went in two groups, then joined together and were visible over 700-800 m, after which, coming onto fresh snow, they disappeared." | — |
| F114 | Lebedev: the tracks run side by side all the time and split into two only far below (about 800 m) at a stone ridge; in some places prints of bare feet seem visible; most tracks were made by feet in socks. | "these tracks go side by side all the time and diverge into 2 tracks only far below (about 800 m) at a stone ridge. It seems that in some places prints of bare feet are visible. Most tracks were made by feet in socks." | Lebedev says they split low down; Chernyshev/Atmanaki say two groups merged high up. |
| F115 | Slobtsov: 15-20 m from the tent tracks were visible going from the tent, made by feet "without footwear, in valenki" (as transcribed); the tracks stood above the surrounding snow surface because the snow around them had been blown out; the tracks were clustered and then diverged. | "the tracks were left by the feet of a person without footwear, in valenki [sic]. The tracks protruded above the surrounding snow surface, because around the tracks the snow had been blown out by the wind." | RU wording is self-contradictory; site EN renders it literally. |
| F116 | Karelin: the tracks of those who ran from the tent were clearly visible on the slope; at first about 8-9, then fewer and fewer until they disappeared. | "We clearly saw on the mountain slope the tracks of those who ran from the tent. At first there were about 8-9 of them, then they became fewer and soon disappeared completely." | Karelin uses "бежавших" (those who ran/fled). |
| F117 | Radiogram, 28 Feb: tracks of 8-9 people found from the tent itself for about 1 km down the slope, then lost; one person was in boots, the rest in socks and barefoot; very deep snow further down; dogs useless; why they left the tent is "completely incomprehensible". | "It was possible to find the tracks of 8-9 people from the tent itself for about 1 km down the slope, further the tracks are lost. One person was in boots, the rest in socks and barefoot." | Earliest track count, before the tent was fully dug out. |
| F118 | Ivanov's resolution: below the tent, over a stretch of up to 500 m, tracks of people going from the tent into the valley and forest were preserved; 8-9 pairs counted; some almost barefoot (one cotton sock), some in valenki; tracks close together, converging and diverging; lost near the forest edge; no signs of struggle or of other people. | "Below the tent, over a stretch of up to 500 metres, the tracks of people going from the tent into the valley and into the forest were preserved on the snow. The tracks were well preserved and 8-9 pairs were counted." | — |
| F119 | Radiogram: all tracks of the Dyatlov group found in the search area were photographed; "there are no wolf tracks here". | sh. 177, radiogram (received Sysoev), early March 1959 | «все обнаруженные районе поисков следы группы Дятлова были сфотографированы волчьих следов здесь нет» | "all tracks of the Dyatlov group found in the search area have been photographed; there are no wolf tracks here" | — |
| F120 | Maslennikov: searching the surroundings and the Lozva downstream of the 4th stream gave nothing: "neither human tracks nor tracks of a predatory animal were found". | sh. 71, Maslennikov, 10.03.1959 | «Ни следов человека, ни следов хищного зверя обнаружено не было.» | "Neither human tracks nor tracks of a predatory beast were found." | — |
| F121 | Radiogram, 24 Feb: Mansi herder Andrey Anyamov saw, about 8-9 days earlier, the track of narrow sport skis heading from the upper Auspiya toward the eastern slope of the ridge; number of people not established. Mansi Anyamov (sh. 230-231, 261-262) and Sheshkin (sh. 263) later describe old ski tracks on the Lozva/Auspiya, snowed over by 4-5 / 15 cm. | sh. 142, radiogram 24.02.1959; sh. 230-231, 261-262, 263 (Anyamov, Sheshkin, Mar-Apr 1959) | «След видел пастух Анямов андрей примерно 8-9 дней назад след узких спортивных лыж» | "Herder Andrey Anyamov saw the track about 8-9 days ago, a track of narrow sport skis" | Relates to the group's approach, not the flight from the tent. |
| F122 | Ivanov's resolution: the group's own preserved ski track showed that, at the pass, they deviated 500-600 m to the left (onto the eastern slope of 1079) from the direct route to Otorten. | sh. 385, Ivanov, 28.05.1959 | (paraphrase; RU on sh. 385) | — | Also Cheglakov/Pashin (sh. 44-45, 49-50): a Mansi ski track 10 km from the tent; no ski tracks visible near the tent (snowed over). |

## Topic 4. The cedar: fire, branches, cut firs, items

| No. | Fact | Source | RU original | EN rendering | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| F123 | The two bodies at the cedar were found 1.5 km north-east of height 1079, at the sources of the right tributary of the Lozva, which begins in the saddle between heights 1079 and 880. | sh. 3, Protocol of inspection of the scene, Tempalov (with Maslennikov; witnesses Yarovoy, Slobtsov, Kurikov), 27.02.1959 | «К северо-востоку от высоты "1079" в полутора километрах в истоках правого истока реки Лозьвы, начинающейся в седловине между высотами "1079" и "880"» | "To the north-east of height 1079, one and a half kilometres away, at the sources of the right source of the Lozva river, beginning in the saddle between heights 1079 and 880" | — |
| F124 | Near the cedar dry branches were broken off at 2-2.5 m; branches were broken on the cedar itself; under the cedar, in a hollow, traces of a fire (half-burnt branches). | "near the cedar, at 2-2.5 metres, dry branches are broken off. Branches are broken on the cedar itself. Under the cedar in a hollow traces of a fire were found, as evidenced by half-burnt branches." | — |
| F125 | By the fire: a half-burnt sock and a checked (cowboy) shirt with 8 rubles in it; a half-burnt greenish balaclava. | "Near the fire a half-burnt sock and a checked shirt were found. In the shirt money - 8 rubles. A half-burnt greenish balaclava." | — |
| F126 | The two bodies lay 1 m north of the fire, heads to the west, feet to the east; Krivonischenko face up (right foot bare, left in a torn brown sock, skin missing from the back of the left hand, bloodied fingers, skin torn on left shin); the second body, recorded as "Zolotaryov" (actually Doroshenko), belly down in shirt, blue shorts, torn blue underwear, wool socks over torn knitted socks, blood at ear, nose and lips. | "To the north of the fire at a distance of one metre, heads to the west, feet …" | The RU transcription shows «труп Золотарева? … (сверху написано в скобках: "ошибка")»: the misidentification was annotated "error" on the original sheet; same error in radiogram sh. 146. |
| F127 | Maslennikov: a fairly decent fire of cedar and fir branches had been lit, but it burned about one and a half hours (eight-centimetre cedar branches had burnt through in half). | sh. 68, Maslennikov, 10.03.1959 | «был разведен довольно приличный костер из веток кедра и елочек, но этот костер горел часа полтора (восьмисантиметровые сучья кедра перегорели пополам)» | "a fairly decent fire of cedar and fir branches had been made, but this fire burned about an hour and a half (eight-centimetre cedar branches burned through in half)" | Site EN: "80 cm cedar boughs burned in half" - wrong by a factor of 10. |
| F128 | Maslennikov: by the fire were scattered several wool and cotton socks, a burnt lady's handkerchief, scraps of woollen clothing; 3-4 cedar branches lay under Doroshenko; the lower dry branches of the cedar were broken off up to 2 m and also at 4.5-5 m; two birches nearby had deep cuts. | sh. 68-69, same | (paraphrase) | — | — |
| F129 | Chernyshev: 20 m before the cedar 6-7 small firs had been cut with a knife, apparently for kindling or bedding; the fire contained burnt branches 8-10 cm thick; at the bottom of the cedar the branches were broken off completely as high as a person can reach; one branch was broken at 4-5 m; such thick branches "can be broken only with great effort, for example by hanging on them with the whole body". | "6-7 small firs had been cut … In the fire were burnt branches 8-10 cm thick … one branch was broken at a height of about 4-5 m. The broken branches were thick; such branches can be broken off only with great effort, if, for example, one hangs on them with the whole body." | — |
| F130 | Atmanaki: the bodies lay on a thin layer of fir branches; about 2 m from them, behind the cedar, were the remains of "a fairly big" fire, judging by charred logs up to 80 mm in diameter burnt through in half; under the cedar someone's checked shirt, a handkerchief, several socks, a cuff. | sh. 216, Atmanaki | «сохранились следы костра, довольно большого, судя по тому, что сохранившиеся головешки диаметром до 80 мм, перегорели пополам» | "traces of a fire remained, fairly big, judging by the surviving charred pieces up to 80 mm in diameter burnt through in half" | Atmanaki 80 mm = Maslennikov 8 cm. |
| F131 | Atmanaki: 8 rubles (a 3 and a 5) were found; about 20 fir cuttings within 20 m of the cedar, but the cut trunks were not found except one; there was no need to cut these young shoots since they broke easily; "one might think this was done by people badly weakened, or with clouded reason". | "there was no need to cut or chop, because all these young shoots broke easily even with slight effort. One might think that this was done by people badly weakened, or with clouded reason." | — |
| F132 | Atmanaki: fresh breaks were visible on the cedar; most of the dry branches were broken to a height of 5 m; on the side facing the tent the branches were cleared at 4-5 m, unused, so that "the people seem to have made something like a window" to look from a height toward the side they came from and where the tent was. | "It looked as if the people had made something like a window so that from a height they could look at that side of the cedar from which they had come and where their tent was." | — |
| F133 | Atmanaki: around the fire the snow was well trampled and melted. | sh. 219, same | (paraphrase) | — | Site EN omits the RU clause "огонь был довольно сильный" (the fire was fairly strong) in this passage. |
| F134 | Sogrin: the fire burned 2-3 hours, was not large and could not warm undressed people; the site showed that more than two people had been there because "titanic work" had been done gathering firewood and fir branches (many cuts on trunks, broken branches and small firs). | sh. 333, Sogrin, 24.04.1959 | «проделана титаническая работа по заготовке дров, лапника» | "titanic work was done in procuring firewood and fir branches" | Fire duration 2-3 h vs Maslennikov 1.5 h (F127). |
| F135 | Brusnitsyn: around the cedar more than ten small firs had been cut with a Finnish knife; the lower dry branches of the cedar were broken off; the snow all around was trampled; on the cedar raw branches about 5 cm thick were broken at a height of 3-4 m. | "Around, more than ten small firs had been cut down with a Finnish knife. The lower dry branches of the cedar were broken off. The snow all around was trampled." | — |
| F136 | Slobtsov: at the cedar he saw the Mansi Bakhtiyarov find 8 rubles (a 5 and a 3, rolled up) in the snow; without him a 5-kopeck coin, a whole checked shirt, socks, a piece of sweater, a handkerchief and a dark cloth belt about 80 x 10 cm were found there. в свернутом виде» | "I saw the Mansi Bakhtiyarov find in the snow 8 rubles in notes of 5 and 3 rubles, rolled up" | — |
| F137 | Radiogram, 2-3 March: the cut firs near the cedar suggested to the searchers that others besides the two found had been there. | sh. 174, radiogram, 02-03.03.1959 | (paraphrase) | — | — |
| F138 | Radiogram, 4 March: at the cedar a handkerchief, 2.5 pairs of socks and a torn grey sweater cuff were found. | sh. 179, radiogram, 04.03.1959 | (paraphrase) | — | — |
| F139 | Ivanov's resolution: Krivonischenko's knife, later found near the ravine bodies, was the one used to cut the young firs at the fire. | sh. 386, Ivanov, 28.05.1959 | «которым срезались у костра молодые пихты» | "with which the young firs were cut at the fire" | — |
| F140 | Chernyshev: the cedar stands 1.5 km from the tent down the slope. | sh. 91, Chernyshev | «В полутора километрах от палатки вниз по склону стоит кедр.» | "One and a half kilometres from the tent down the slope stands the cedar." | Agrees with sh. 3 (1.5 km from height 1079). |

## Topic 5. Bodies on the slope (Dyatlov, Kolmogorova, Slobodin) - positions only

| No. | Fact | Source | RU original | EN rendering | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| F141 | Dyatlov was found 400 m south-west of the cedar bodies, on his back, knees slightly bent, hands to the chest, left elbow resting on a birch branch, head 5-7 cm behind a birch trunk; dressed in fur jacket, sweater, shirt, ski trousers, wool sock on right foot, cotton on left; no injuries on external examination; "ice on the face and under the chin". | sh. 4, Protocol of inspection of the scene, 27.02.1959 | «На лице и под подбородком наледь.» | "On the face and under the chin, an ice crust." | Distance to cedar 400 m (protocol) vs 300 m (Maslennikov F146). |
| F142 | Kolmogorova was found strictly south-west of Dyatlov on the slope of 1079 at a distance of 500 m (the figure corrected from "58" or "56" in the original). метров от трупа» | "strictly in the south-west direction on the slope of height 1079 at a distance of 500 (corrected from '58' or '56' - transcriber's note) metres from the body" | 500 m conflicts with Maslennikov's 150 + 180 = 330 m / 350 m (F146-F148). |
| F143 | Kolmogorova lay face to the ground on her right side, hands under the body, legs half bent, the right one drawn to the stomach; pink wool cap; bloodied face; abrasions on the back near the waist; from her posture the protocol infers she "was trying not to climb up the mountain but to hold on in place". | "It can be supposed that Kolmogorova, judging by the position of the body, was trying not to clamber up the mountain but to hold on in place." | Atmanaki (F150) reads the same posture as climbing/crawling up. |
| F144 | Bardin/Shuleshko: Dyatlov's body was visible from under the snow; Kolmogorova was 850 m from the tent. | sh. 34-35 | (paraphrase) | — | — |
| F145 | Maslennikov: Dyatlov lay 300 m from the cedar toward the tent, face up, left hand to the face; his watch showed 5:31. | sh. 69, Maslennikov, 10.03.1959 | «У Дятлова на руке были часы, которые показывали 5 часов 31 минуту.» | "On Dyatlov's wrist was a watch showing 5 hours 31 minutes." | — |
| F146 | Maslennikov: 350 m above Dyatlov toward the tent Lt. Moiseev's dog found Kolmogorova; she was dressed warmer than Dyatlov (2 wool sweaters, checked shirt, two caps, 2 trousers, leggings), four socks on each foot; no quilted jacket, footwear or gloves. | "350 m above Dyatlov toward the tent Lt. Moiseev with the help of a dog found … Four socks on each foot." | — |
| F147 | Maslennikov: Slobodin (found 5 March by probing, Karelin with Potapov's soldiers) lay face down, head toward the tent, left arm out, right fist to the chest, right leg bent, one valenok on the right foot; ski cap on head. | sh. 71-72, same | (paraphrase) | — | — |
| F148 | Maslennikov: Slobodin lay midway between Dyatlov and Kolmogorova - "more precisely 150 m from Kolmogorova and 180 m from Dyatlov"; "all the bodies found lay on a strict straight line between the tent and the cedar, at some angle to the hollow". | "150 m from Kolmogorova and 180 m from Dyatlov. All the bodies found lay on a strict straight line between the tent and the cedar, at some angle to the hollow." | — |

| F202 | The group diary's last entry is dated 31 January 1959 (written by Dyatlov): the group reached the forest boundary in strong warm west wind about 4 pm, turned back south into the Auspiya valley and camped. | sh. 28, copy of the group diary | «31 января 1959 г. | "31 January 1959. Today the weather is a little worse, wind (westerly), snow (apparently from the firs) …" | — |
| F203 | The wall newspaper "Vecherniy Otorten" No. 1 is dated 1 February 1959. | sh. 31, copy of the group's "combat sheet" | «" ВЕЧЕРНИЙ ОТОРТЕН " №1: 1 февраля 1959 г.» | "'Evening Otorten' No. 1: 1 February 1959" | Last dated document produced by the group. |
| F204 | Bardin/Shuleshko reconstruction: 31 Jan the group reached the pass into the Lozva valley and stayed below the pass; 1 Feb they built the labaz and set out at 15:00 to the pass; at dusk, about 17:00 or 18:00, they stopped and pitched the tent; pitching takes about 1 hour, so the people got into the tent about 19:00-20:00. 19 – 20-00» | "On 1 February the group builds the labaz and sets out at 15:00 to the pass. At dusk, about 17:00 or 18:00, the group stops and sets up the tent. Setting up the tent takes about 1 hour, so it can be assumed that the people got into the tent about 19:00-20:00" | — |
| F205 | Maslennikov: on 31 Jan the group covered 14 km and in the evening reached the pass to the Lozva (the later helipad site); the wind "as at an aircraft's take-off" and unsuitability of the place forced them back 1000 m down to camp in the forest on the left bank of the Auspiya; on 1 Feb they built the labaz and set off at 3 pm, after lunch, along the old track. | F207 | Ivanov's resolution: the hikers' preserved ski track showed that, moving toward the fourth tributary valley, they deviated 500-600 m to the left and came out on the eastern slope of 1079; having used the daylight for the climb, Dyatlov decided to pitch on the slope so as to go to Otorten (about 10 km in a straight line) next morning without losing height. | sh. 385, same | «до которой по прямой оставалось около 10 км» | "to which about 10 km remained in a straight line" | — |
| F208 | Ivanov's resolution: one camera contains a last frame showing the digging of snow for the tent; given exposure 1/25 s, aperture 5.6, film 65 GOST units and the density of the frame, the hikers began pitching the tent about 5 pm on 1 Feb 1959; a similar shot exists on another camera; no record or photograph after that time was found. ## Topic 10. Ivanov's resolution of 28 May 1959 (sh. 384-387)

| No. | Fact | Source | RU original | EN rendering | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| F233 | The closing document is the "Resolution on termination of the criminal case", drawn up by prosecutor-criminalist Ivanov on 28 May 1959 in Sverdlovsk, agreed by deputy head of the investigation department Lukin and approved by regional prosecutor Klinov. (Лукин)» | "The criminal case on the death of the group of hikers is to be terminated from further proceedings. Prosecutor-criminalist, junior counsellor of justice (Ivanov). Agreed: … (Lukin)" | — |
| F234 | Ivanov's verbatim conclusion on the cause of death. | Literal: "Considering the absence on all the bodies of external bodily injuries and of signs of struggle, the presence of all the group's valuables, and also taking into account the conclusion of the forensic medical expertise on the causes of death of the hikers, it should be considered that the cause of the hikers' death was an elemental (natural) force which the hikers were not in a condition to overcome." Site EN: "it is concluded that the cause of their demise was overwhelming force, which the hikers were not able to overcome." | «стихийная сила» = "elemental/natural force" (стихия = the elements); "overwhelming force" (site EN) loses the "natural/elemental" sense. Note the phrase "absence on all the bodies of external bodily injuries" sits in the same document that records Slobodin's skull crack and the ravine injuries. |
| F235 | Ivanov: the investigation established no presence of other people in the area of height 1079 on 1 or 2 February 1959 other than the Dyatlov group; the Mansi population living 80-100 km away is friendly to Russians, gives hikers shelter and help; the place is considered by the Mansi unsuitable for hunting and reindeer herding in winter. Установлено также, что население народности манси, проживающее в 80-100 км от этого места, относится к русским дружелюбно» | "The investigation carried out did not establish the presence on 1 or 2 February 1959 in the area of height 1079 of other people apart from the Dyatlov group of hikers. It was also established that the Mansi population living 80-100 km from this place is friendly toward Russians" | — |
| F236 | Ivanov: for shortcomings in the organisation of tourism work and weak control, the bureau of the Sverdlovsk city party committee punished (in party order) UPI director Siunov, party bureau secretary Zaostrovskih, trade-union chairman Slobodin, chairman of the city sports union Kurochkin and inspector Ufimtsev; the chairman of the UPI sports club Gordo was dismissed. | "the bureau of the Sverdlovsk city committee of the CPSU punished in party order: the director of the Ural Polytechnic Institute Siunov, party bureau secretary Zaostrovskih, chairman of the trade-union committee of UPI Slobodin, chairman …" | — |
| F237 | Ivanov: the group was well prepared; Dyatlov's only fault was the late (15:00) start; the tent was pitched correctly; the group supped/changed; the tent was abandoned suddenly and simultaneously; the leeward side was cut from inside in two places. | sh. 384-385 | (see F89, F90, F206) | — | — |
| F238 | Ivanov: tracks of 8-9 pairs for up to 500 m; four bodies found 26.II (his date), Slobodin 5 March, four on 4 May under 4-4.5 m of snow 75 m from the fire; clothing of the dead at the cedar was cut off and used by the others; Krivonischenko's knife used to cut firs; watches Dyatlov 5:31, Slobodin 8:45, Thibeaux 8:14 and 8:39. | sh. 386 | (see F118, F154, F170, F171, F217) | — | — |
| F239 | Ivanov states that the cut side of the tent was the leeward («подветренная») side where the hikers had their heads and that the cuts were "in two places", citing the criminalistic expertise. | sh. 385 | «подветренная сторона палатки, куда туристы располагались головами, оказалась разрезана изнутри в двух местах» | "the leeward side of the tent, where the hikers lay with their heads, turned out to be cut from inside in two places" | Churkina counted three cuts (F76). Maslennikov/Tempalov describe the torn side as the north/windward side. |
| F240 | Ivanov gives the temperature on 1 Feb as "of the order of 25-30°" and describes strong wind as usual for the locality; he does not cite any weather-station record. | sh. 385 | «низкой температуры порядка 25-30°С» | "low temperature of the order of 25-30°C" | — |
| F241 | Ivanov's resolution contains no mention of an avalanche, snow slab or snow collapse; the only forces named are wind, low temperature and "стихийная сила". | sh. 384-387, whole document (searched for лавин/обвал/снежн. | — | — | Negative finding. |
| F242 | Ivanov's resolution dates the discovery of the tent and first bodies to 26.II.59, while the radiograms (sh. 146-149) and the scene protocol (sh. 3) date the first bodies to 27.II.59. | sh. 386 vs sh. 3, 146-149 | «26.II.59 г. | "On 26.II.59, 1500 metres from the tent …" | — |

## Topic 11. Every mention of avalanche or snow collapse in the file (addendum)

| No. | Fact | Source | RU original | EN rendering | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| F243 | Sogrin, 24 April: trench-digging and similar methods were unacceptable "because here there was neither an avalanche nor a snow collapse". | sh. 335, Sogrin | «здесь не было ни лавины, ни снежного обвала» | "here there was neither an avalanche nor a snow collapse" | Site EN "no avalanche, no snowfall". |
| F244 | Krasnobaev (interrogation, March 1959), reporting the Mansi Pavel Bakhtiyarov: "if the hikers died, it was only on the other side of the Ural ridge, because there are big snow avalanches there". | "Pavel Bakhtiyarov explained to me that if the hikers died, it was only on the other side of the Ural ridge because there are big snow avalanches there." | Refers to the western (far) side of the ridge, not to the 1079 slope. |
| F245 | Atmanaki: on 7-8 March a group of five equipped with avalanche probes went through the ravine 50 m behind the cedar over a 300 m stretch, without result. Никаких результатов это не дало» | "a group of five people equipped with avalanche probes went through the ravine 50 m beyond the cedar, examining a stretch 300 m long. This gave no results" | "Avalanche probes" as equipment; the same ravine yielded the four bodies in May. |
| F246 | No other document in the 392-sheet transcription (radiograms, protocols, interrogations, resolutions) uses the words лавина, обвал or снежная доска in connection with the tent site; the early "buried by snow" hypothesis is confined to radiogram sh. 149 (F157). | whole file (grep of all 91 RU pages) | — | — | Negative finding; see conflicts file for the 27-28 Feb "hurricane" radiograms. |
