ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 28. 1871. Established Oct. 18, 1851 Tba Introd action of Richmond.' Cable Tower into Fnltoa, XT. "ST. Messrs. Ocrao Tobey, N. H. Gilbert, ad J. J. Wolootl, owners of a Urge flour ing mill at F.lton, Oswego Co., ere mooing it with Richmond' Cable Tower, s descrip tion of which we find io tbe Oswego Times. The mill it situated opon tbe berm bank of the cane!, between the canal end the mill raoe end the weter wheel by which the machinery is driven, is on the opposite tide of the rnoe end street, the weter being dis charged into the river. The motion from the weter wheel is commnniceted to the mi hioery of the mill by the means of wire cable passing over the street end race at a heighth to cause no obstruction to the street or anything intervening between tV mill and the wheel. The wheel is a tu'v"' manofai tared by Harrison and H'ln,ri of Rome, and is of 100 horse po""" "P" right shaft rises from the w1 twenty, five feet, at the top of which ten feet driring wheel. This driring wheel is of iron, grooved and sacked wita solid rubber, .lriren to its place, and is Tery durable. The driving wheel io the mill is in the upper story, and is like the one above the water wheel, eicept that it is but six feet in diam eter. From this driving wheel in the mill descends an npright shaft, through the various lofts, from whioh the machinery ol the mill derives motioe. The cable is three hundred feet in length, five-eights of an inch in diameter, and is composed of one hand red aal thirty three wires of annealed iron, tw red into strands, like an ordinary rope, being almost precisely like the wire riggtng of vessels which has come into use within a fen years. This cable is very flexible and durable, and will doubtless wear for many years. This method of communicating power by means of a cab'.e has recently come into n.e, and has many advantages. It allows the loretion of factories or mills wherever convenience re. aires, even at a distance from the driving power. This is the case with this mill.
