The ladies of the Presbyterian church
in Tiffin, will give a dinner in Xation
al Hall, on Wednesday, December 20,
from 11 A. M. to 2 P. M. Price for
dinner 50 cents. They will also give
a supper in the Hall on tho evening

to the interest of the occasion. A

Cold Bath A. M. Christ attempted
to drive his horses across the ice, be
low the wooden bridge, ou Monday af
ternoon last When a short distance
from shore, the ics broke and the
animals went under, .all except their
heads. Help was at hand soon, and
some held the horses' heads out of wa
ter, while others cut the ice away, so
that the animals could reach shore.
The ice was not as strong as most people
supposed, and as Mr. Christ discovered.
Concert. We hope the concert to be
given by MissSallie Startsman's class,
at National Hall, to-morrow (Friday)
night, will bi well attended. Wher
ever given thij concert has been pro
nounced superb, abounding in excel
lent music, and showing thorough
training on the part of the scholars and
the careful instructress as regards the
teacher. The visit of the ciass.recent
ly, to the Soldiers' Home, Dayton,
to give concert, was very pleasant

Let n Maanfartnre. Our manufac
turing interests are the ones that now
should attract, the attention of our
citizens. They are the life of every
inland town, and not one was ever
known to prosper whose people did
not have spirit enough to invest in
that direction. Examples of great suc
cess in manufacturing are Akron and
Springfield. Neither of these possess
one natural advantage that Tiffin can
not boast of, yet they both are larger
in population, and wealthier in a three
fold proportion. Men there, from
t'.ie inception of the town, believed in
manufacturing and entered into it
with a will. Tiffin can make a bril
liant future for itself in this direction,
if it chooses nothing is needed but
the will; there is capital enough that
can be Invested at home to do all that
will be necessary to give us a healthy
growth. But if thia capital is used in
the direction indicated, it would be
hut a nest-egg to the capital that will
flow from abroad. Only let us show
that we are ready to invest our home
capital and we will see capital outside
coming in seeking investment. With
next spring will come the completion
of our new railroads, when there would
be no excuse for not putting the best
foot foremost in our manufacturing
interests. What do our capitalists
say They have the floor.
Fair of Engine Co. Jio. 1. As pre
viously announced, this fair will open
City Hall on Saturday evening,
December 23. Most of the general
arrangements for the fair have been
made, and they promise any amount
of pleasure and profit to all. A New
York Minstrel and Theatrical Troupe
has been engaged, consisting of two
ladies and four gentlemen. The cele
brated Billy Allen is with the Troupe.
They have an excellent list of prizes
in their Thousand Dollar Lottery,
among which are a fine set of furu
ture. cook and parlor stoves, set of
harness, a buggy, double barrelled
shot eun and "fixtures" valued at
51GC. Xo prize will be offered worth
less than a dollar. Good music has
been secured for the whole fair, and
all arrangements made for an excel
lent time. Great efforts are beini:
made to have this one of the best
fairs ever held here.
Stolon On Friday night last, a
horso and buggy belongiag to Mr. C.
W. Foster, of Fostoria, was taken
from his barn. The thieves sawed a
bole in the door in order to unlock it,
and get in the barn in which the
property was. The same night the
hardware store of X. Portz Co., was
broken into and a large amount of
cutlery and other valuables taken
from a show-case. Nothing has been
found of the thieve?. Tiie horse and
buggy were found in an alley, in the
ward of this city, on Saturday
morning. It is supposed that the
thieves took the horse and buggy
enable them to get off with thoir
plunder, and that they took the train
this place. Marshal Nichols took
the horso and buggy to Fostoria on
Saturday, and receivod the reward
that was offered for its recovery

A Bare Case. A doctor was sent for
last week, by a family in this place,
the messenger reporting that the per
son who wauted him had a bone in
throat. He got another doctor,
aud with proper instruments, they
proceeded to the house of the patient.

much bad whiskey or baer. The doc
tars took their leave, after telling the
family what was the matter. They
not believe it and sent for another
doctor. He came, anJ seeing vhat
was the matter, proceeded to give
the fellow a dose by putting an in
strument dowu his throat. After op
erating on the man the doctor told
them the bone was gone, and left. The
man soon recovered and has learned
wisdom bssides having a sore throat.
He will not invest in liquid again
bones, at 10 cents per glass, very soon.

Ohio Stove Works. Our citizens
generally have but little conception of
the importance of tho Ohio btove
Works to our city, or the amount of
business done by It. By the close of
thia year, December 31, they will have
manufactured and sold nearly 11,000
stoves, of different patterns. This
does not include an immeuse quality
of hollow ware, castings, etc. A little
thought will enable every one to see
the value of this works to the interests
of our city. We should take pride in
it During the year wo have printed
for the establishment 10,000 shipping
tags. These do not cover all the ship
ments, as car load after car load are
to firms without using tags,
More Bakes. The Tiffin Agricultur
al Works, as we are informed by Mr.
X. M. Barnes, is hard at work getting
out rakes for the next summer's trade.
Over 8,033 are to be made, which will
probably not meet the demand for
this very popular implement. They
are made of lumber that has been on
hand over a year, and is perfectly dry.
Of this they have sufficient to make
the rakes the comiug season, and in
the meantime they are receiving lum
ber to season for the year still farther
ahead. The business for the past year
has been very successful, and the
Works have been managed economi
cally. Tnlon Communion was held in the
M. E. Church, Monday night last. A
large number participated.

The fence is made of four wires, placed
horozontally from post to post, two
above and two below, three feet apart.
After the wires are stretched, upright
boards or pickets are used, and are
put in by reversing the wires, as each
one is inserted, the crossing of the
wires holding them to their places
firmly. The cost of the fence is much
less than that of the ordinary kind, it
taking less lumber and being more
easily and quickly built It will last
as long as lumber and wire will stand.

The B. 4 O. R. R. Engineer corps
are still operating in this vicinity,
examining into the merits of several
routes for the proposed railroad.
The first contested law-suit held in
this township during the year 1871,
took place on Saturday last before 8.
Lapham, J. P., and a jury. It was a
Replevin suit, brought by G. W. and
Eliza McCartney, vs., O. P. Rogers;
verdict for plaintiff.
Mr. T. M. Pancost, formerly of this
place, recently of St Louis, is opening
school here for giving instructions

The prosecutions by the Grand Ju
ry of our salooa keepers has greatly
abated their operations. Outside of
rum-selling they are gentlemanly fel
lows, and we trust tbey will take ad

business that will take its place in

ing they will confer a favor upon civ
citizens of the town and neighbor
hood.
Our school board have finally secur
ed a teacher. The board of education
of Hopewell Tp., passed a resolution,
last spring, that they would only pay
52 00 per day for winter teachers, and
the result is, that they have, with a
few exceptions, employed Inexpe
rienced teachers and the effects will
be developed in the future.
The school west of town has been iu
successful operation three weeks. It
fully up to the times in grade, and
use of the text-books, using G"yot's
Geography, Harvey's Grammar and
Stoddard's Arithmetic.
As all farm work is completed, near
ly all the farmers are engaged in fur
nishing ties for the new railroad,
which is being rapidly completed.
