load of lumber at Kaup's planing
mill, his horses became frightened at
dog-fight in the vicinty, and ran at
the top of their speed across the wire
bridge. Coming up Main street they
managed to avoid coming In contact
with any of the teams lining the
street except in one instance, In which
case they knocked over a horse and
buggy completely. At the corner of
Main and Market they took to the
pavement, when the large stepping
stone in front of Hershlser 4 Myers

Theatrical. Mr. A. O. Miller's
troupe have been giving theatrical en
tertainments in this city since last
Friday evening. Thus far they have
good houses, and have received
unbounded applause from the audi
ences. Mr. Miller, in the different
characters he has represented here,
shows the versatile actor, aud in
many parts has' 110 superior. Mrs.
Miller is charming in every part she
assumes, except that of "Topsey," in
Uncle Tom's Cabin, in which she ex
the original Topsey, black or
white, in every way. She brings out

tle darkey superbly. We have net
space to mention other worthy mem
bers of the troupe. To-night will be
played Hamlet Mr. Miller takes the

The same may be Mtid with regard
to our county fairs, which were
originally designed to encourage home
Industry in its various departments,

and hoasehold pursuits. Fairs are all
right and good, so long as they are
properly conducted and held in their
proper limits; otherwise, they will de
generate, as well as any other good
enterprise, and become rather a curse,
than a blessing to the attendants.
The good ai med at, has of late years,
at least according to my views, Ijeen
considerably counteracted by suffering j
those uncalled for shows, plays and
gamblings within the enclosures, to
gether with those infamous foul
mouthed demons in human form who
disgraced the very spot on which they
trod, and the good people of Seneca
county.
By thus yielding to those unhallow
ed things, they will ultimately prove
disastrous, and detrimental to the in
terests of our fairs and instead of en
joying theseannual general getherings
in common, tiiey become a nuisance
to society and effect a baneful in
flue nee on our rising generation, in
stead of setting them a good example
Those off-thoo(, referred to above,
are demoralizing lu their very nature,
and revolting to the moral person,
whilst compelling the christian, con
scientiously, to absent himself and
to stand aloof, whereas he otherwise
might enjoy the fair with the rest of
mankind peradventure proving to be
a salt to the masses. God knows.
I would suggest: Let those un
necessary appendages to the fair be
dispensed with altogether, for the
money gained by their admittance is
only so much ill-gotten gain, all
cankered, learing but curses in its
train. Tiie Lord prevent us, in the
future, from such a curse. And what
shall we say about the races? Never
theless let there be the necessary eata
bles provided for, for accommodation's
sake. We pray, let not the religious
community be imposed upon by in
dulging in those non-essentials, above
referred too; but let us have a county
fair, that will prove fair to both saint
and sinner, a blessing to all. By so
doing old Seneca county will bid fair
for a hopeful future. I beg pardon for
being so radical iu this direction

The financial success of the Seneca
County Fair is beyond question. The
gate receipts were $2,810, and, from
other sources sufficient was realized
to make the gross amount received
little over $3,500.
As a rule, the management of the
fair proper gave the best of satisfac
tion. Exhibitors received all neces
sary attention, and were treated in a
cordial manner.
The part of the fair that was con
demned were the shows, lotteries and
the profuse number of catch-penny
affairs on the ground. The objections
to these things are well taken, and
the managers now sje it In the same
light that other people d and will not
be likely to bs cuht in any more
trapi of the kind shiuld they ever
have part in the contact of another
fair.
As the bUloon ascension did not
eomooff, it is well enough to explain
the reason of the failure. The mana
gers had a written contract with the
balloonist to make two ascensions
one on Thursday smd one on Friday.
Thursday he did not come, but tele
graphed that on Friday he would be
on hand. That was the last heard of
him. It will be seen by this that the of
ficers of tiie society were not to blame
because there was no ascension, aud
that the announcement was not made
to draw a crowd under false pretenses.
Aside from these matters, we think
the last Seneca County Fair was a
good one, and heard it spoken of high
ly, repeatedly, by people from abroad.
A gentleman who represents the Ohio
Fanner told us he had attended thir
teen county fairs this fall and that
ours was the best of that number.

railroad, on the alley which runs on
the east side of the Square and passes
