The coal fields were developed and aided a
new impetus to her life. The pineries of
Michigan and Wisconiin were Eending their
lumber to her door. As fine a grain land as

around her. Hides and tallow were becoming
staples of her commerce, and in beef and pork
the was rivalling the Porkopolis of the Union.
She had gathered around her an army of ardent
spirits, whose desires of success were on a par
with her prospects, and the advance of Chicago
became a triumphal inarch. Staid old St. Louis,
on the Father of Waters, looked on with some
thing of amazement at the-pick-and-span dash
of her flourishing young neighbor. Following
the capacities of young Chicago came

The iron ways spread around her like a net, con
nectlc g her with Montreal, Quebec and Portland
on tbe northeast Xew York, Boetoa, Philadel
phia, Cincinnati and all the great points on the
rait with Charleston and Savannah on the
sauthe&st, and Mobile anl New Orleans on the
south. Canals were dog that water might carry
what steam would cot. Never was such a mush
rvom city seen. Of the fabulous fortunes which

alone it were impossible to tell in a day. Lied
formed or swamp neglected as waste within fif
teen j ears of the present date appreciated so
marvellously in value that it was little wonder
it overshot the mark three or four years ago and
has fluctuated ever since. Fort Dearborn .which
was rebuilt in 1816, was pulled down in 1807.
It stood in what is now tbe very heart of the
city at the junction of Michigan avenue with
Late street and again its site has been licked
with the forked tongue of the fiery element
which left its first structure a heap of ashes.
In 1S3 the town was first worthy of that
name.
IX 1837 IT WAS GRANTED A CHARTER.
The first vessel unloaded at Its wharf Jute 11,
1831, and in ib'-U its population outside of hops,
demoralized Indians and dogs was 4,170. In
1831 there were thirty-five house, mostly I05
huts. To give some idea of its human advance
it is only teceFsary to know that in 1343 it nam
hcred 7,850 souls, in 1S17 it was 16,S5'J, in 1S50
it totalled in 1855 it counted 80.023 in
1800 it row to 100.2C3 in 1ECG it embraced
178,589, and the census of 1870 allows to the
city proj-er 119,370, while including its suburbs

Like all western cities, it was built at first
principally of wood, and indeed its compara
tive cheapness, coupled with the scarcity and
deamess of other building material, made this
a necessity. Built originally in the midst of
swamp land, it was subject to the periodical over
flaw from the rising of the waters from Lake
Michigan, and the result was that much
valuable property was thus destroyed. Be
sides the drainage was defective, owing to the
low level cf the greater part of the land on
which tbe city was built In 1855 this led the
City Fathers to take a bold step, and the proper
authorities having been gained, it was ordered

houses and al), to form three to eight and in
some cases to fifteen feet above its then level
The difficulty of this feat and the manner in
which it was surmounted is a standing toast
among the worthy citizens cf the fated town.
In the outlying districts, where the streeU and
avenues have tot been raised to the rtquired
level, it is common to see the sills of tbe doors cf I

route raised ten or twelve feet above the path
way, with a wooden stair on either side leading
to a platform along the front This peculiarity
and tbe wcoden piles on which most of the
buildings were raised help to make the already
combustible material of tbe town a ready prey

Behind it runs through a dilution into pure

THE VERT HEART OF THE CITT,
from which its commercial life-blood flowed, and
where its social amenities centred. The court
house, the great hotels, banks, theatres and
newspaper offices, are here. State Street, the
main street of the city, was one to be remem
bered when osce seen, with its great piles of
stoce, marble and iron rearing their procd heads
above Its itatelj width and crowded with the
worth, wit, fashion ani wealth of the West on
its wide footways, while the wagons of com
merce rumbled alonz its tiavement. South
Clark Street, grand also in its commercial opu
lence, was a magnificent sight by night, with its
great length lit by myriad gas lamps. Dear
born's Street was another, and La Salle Street,
ending in the Michigan anl Southern Hailway
depot South Wells Street, too, was a grand
avenue cf trade, and over along the Lake, where
Michigan and Wabash Avenue runs for five
miles, were gathered the tasteful houses and

of the Garden City. These avenues form a de
lightful drive, and were much frequented by the
citizens when free from their go-abeai toil.' To
the east of Central Avenue, iato which Michi
gan Avenue rnns, stood a few hours ago, per

on the continent, that of the Illinois Central
and Michigan Southern Railroads. On the lake
side of tbe square which this forms, and along
the mouth cf the Chicago River, are situated
most cf the tall grain elevators, which are, or
were, such a feature in this city. Their lots,
together with the grain they contained, will be
very serious. Along the Chicago lUver, oa
Water Street and Lake, are the houses of the
commission brokers, where most of the transfer
business of the city is carried on. The north
