The number of vessel* belonging to
or bound to or from the United Stales,
reported during November as totally
lost or missing, wax 70, of which 28
wore wrecked, 27 abandoned, 4 burned,
2 sunk by collision, 5 foundered nod 3
*re missing. They com prised 2 steam
ers, 9 ships, 32 burks, 10 brigs and 17
schooners. Eleven were foreign vessels
and 59 American, of which latter uum
.iter 29 were whalers lost in the Arctic
aea in the Fall.
While the jailer of the prison at Lan
caster, (N. II.,) was in the cell of a
convict named Horn, the other day, the
latter quietly slipped out, locked in his
keeper and walked out unmolested.
The jailer remained in prison several
hours before he could make himself
heard and gain a release, and meant! .e
Horn made good his escape.
Wu verly, lowa, has a nut for geolo
gists to crack. It is stated that u far
mer, while digging a well, found, at a
depth of eighteen feet from the surface,
a stratum of rock and a china my the
figure of a horse. Several wells have
becu dug in the ncigborhood during the
past summer, and not a sign of rock was
discovered, except in this instance.

siana, blew down the house, killing two
men and seriously injuring two others.

The Northern Canals closed fur the

lion dollars worth of grain is ice bound
on thorn. This will mainly affect the
shippers, who will have to wait until

John Bigler, ox governor of Califor

The Western Maryland Railroad.
The Williamsport Pilot atjrs after a careful
review of the condition of the Western Mary
land, and from all the light which wo have
upon thu true financial aspect of thu Work, wo
have seriously arrived at the conclusion that
our people have no reason to doubt it* ultimate
success and final completion to thix place.
W should never forget that this road Is some
what in the condition of a man doing business
entirely upon borrowed Capital. All its mone
tary transactions are subject to a committee
acting under an ordinance of the city of Balti
more* which is the road’s principal endorser.
This committee is required by that ordinance
to inspect the accounts of the Company a a soon
as tho road is completed to Sniiitmbuig. If
sufficient funds remain after such completion,
then thu work on this division will be pushed
forward. If not, wo are certain the road will
be completed by a resort to other modes. It
mnil he built to tho conn/. 11 has been misman
aged in the past. Its funds have not been ju
diciously applied, but we firmly believe that
the road is in better hands to-day than it ever
was, and that means will be found to finish it
speedily. Let us trust the men who have it in
charge. They ask us for this confidence. They
are going to make the road.
The Baltimore Gazette says Mr. Osborne, the
Chief Kngineer of the Western Maryland Rail
road, has recently prepared some maps for thu
purpose of explaning to (he new members of
the Hoard of Direction tho prospective connec
tions of the road and its requirements. The
most important of these is the Miramar Road,
which starts at Harrisburg, and runs along the
west base of the South Mountain to Leesboro’,
a distance of 38 miles thence on through
Waynesboro’ to a point on the Western Mary
land Road, near Chewsviile, and thence to
Uoonsboru’ and Shephardstown, Virginia. The
first section of this road is being constructed.
The property holders are procuring the right
of way and preparing it for the superstructure,
which is to bo laid by the Lebanon Valley
Railroad, a branch of the Reading Road,
which will also stock and run the road.
From Carlisle, a short road, ten miles in
length, called the South Mountain Road, will
make a connection with thu Miramar Road.—
The construction of the roadlroin Leesboro’,
south, is not yet provided for, but efforts are
to bo made to put this portion of the road on
thu same footing as that now under course of
construction.
The advantages of such a road to tho Wes
tern Maryland Rond would be undoubted. Tho
distance from Waynesboro’ to I'hiladulpbia,
when tho Miramar Road is completed, will be
180 miles. To Baltimore it will be less than
80 miles. This difference of distance will, of
course, throw oyer the Western Maryland
Road all the grain and (lour trade of this dis
trict, amounting to more than 135,000 bbls.

Man-land. On the western end of the latter
road considerable money would be earned by
the transportation of bituminous coal to re
place the anthracite coal now used in the Iron
Works along the South Mountain.
In addition to this, the Emmitlsburg branch
will bo extended to Millerstown. The distance*
is short, and the road will be built by the pro
perty-holders, who are desirous of establ iahing
business connections with Baltimore.
The surveys of the proposed road from Wil
liamsport to Cumberland are being pushed
steadily forward, but will not be completed for
some time to come. There is every probability
that this road will be completed, in time. The
capitalists who are interested in Canton, are
satisfied that it is to their interest to make a
great depot at this point. Their arrangetnen t
with the Pennsylvania Central will enable
them to control the petroleum trade, and it is
necessary, fur the etlicient development of the
property, to establish a now ami competing
route fur coal.

Asiatic, regard as an ecclesiastical year.
Advent has u double significance. It
is commemorative of a fact, and it is a
monument cf a doctrine of the fact ol
our Lord's incarnation; of the doctrine
of His coming again. Btrungcly enough
tho existing custom of beginning a
sacred yeir at Advent is not the origi
nal practice of the Christians. The
first usage of the Church was Jewish.
Tho Jews had two years—a civil and a
religious year. The former began with
the October new muon, the latter with
the April new moon. The April moon
brought with its fulness the feast of the
Passover. Corresponding therewith, the
primitive disciples reckoned their holy
year from Easter, the Christian Pass
over. The change of reckoning to Ad
vent did not take place until alter the
fall of tho Western Empire of Rome,
and then under tho influence of half
heretical historians of the earth. Tho
season of Advent, itself, is of compara
lively lute origin. It first appears us a
kifhi of irregular fust, kept on three
diys of the week, from the 14th of
November until Christmas. This is
still the usage of tho Greek Church.
In the west, however, tho season em
braces the four Sundays preceding the
25th of December.
It was rumored in London, but no
credence Is given to tho sensation, that
the generals in Paris have formed a
plan for seising M. Thiers and pro
claiming the Emperor.

i Since their appointment in 1868, the School Commissioners huVe collected and invested about $38,000 of the Principal of the
County School Fund, in building nnd repairing School Houses, and in supplying them with Furniture, Stoves, Ac. With the aid of
a part of the Fund, the Board has b'.ilt about forty new School Houses, repaired n number of old ones, supplied many with Book
Cates, and furnished nearly all with new Patent Desks. At the very lowest fair estimate, the School Property thus acquired in
locations to accommodate almost every section, is worth nearly, if not oulte, double its cost to the Board, and appears to be a much
belter investment than to have the Fund loaned out to individuals on judgments, with tiic danger of occasional losses by insolvencies.
To prevent such possible losses, and to invest the Fund in properly owned by the Board, so that it may do the most ser-ice to the
children ol the county, the School Commissioners have ordered the collection of all the money due on judgments, Ac., so that it may
be invested in School Houses and oilier needful improvements.
