to Mayor Boweu of Washington, who paid
dm $1,000 down and took his contract to

Sherman was too poor to keep such an
establishment in Washington as the General
of the Army ought to have, and that it would

ter a meeting of rich men was held in New
York, the IVcsident's letter read, a sub

that it was a preconcerted plan on the part

ing by thieves, and there is no telling the ex-
