It amounts to nothing to say yon are
for Johnson if yon fail to register.
It
requires a very short time to get you
papers. The contest is between a Dem
ocrat and a Radical. Yon who prate so
much of Democracy have now an oppor
tunity of meeting a square issue between
the parties. Tbere is no way of dodg
ing it. There remain only five days in
which to register. He who neglects to
do so, closes his lips to complaints 0
disfranchisement. He disfranchises him
self, and shows his neighbors that
takes no interest in matters that are, to
them, of most vital interest. Who wi
believe in the Democracy of one who, by
neglecting to vote, sees a Radical step into
the Mayoralty and Memphis become
Radical city? Gentlemen of prominence
and ambition had better look well to the
record they are making. They have
future, but it will be determined
to
a great extent by the course they take i
this election. We shall, in the future,
as we do now, require the services of
able and good men, and it grieves us to
see this class flying in the face of the
people. They should know that the cur
rent is for Johnson, and that it cannot
be changed. It will be in vain to make
combinations. It will be in vain
stretch a drag net over the situation and
collect all the odds and ends and ele
ments of disaffction and opposition. It
will not do. The great body of the peo
ple have spoken, and they will make
their word good on the fourth of Janu
ary. But they must register. They
should not be allowed to sleep until they
do register. Their wives should make
them register, or never kiss them again.

won't stand it. Won't stand what?
Won't stand none of it. No, he won't.
What is wrong, Mr. Grumble? Every
thing is wrong. But mention some
thing. Is the Mayoralty wrong? Yes,
it is it is all wrong. Things ain't car
ried on right. You -are dissatis6ed. I
am. I can't sleep for thinking ot this
confounded business I tumble all night,
and my wife says I have got an attack
of the nightmare. I won't stand it
The City Government! There is the
cause of my trouble. Are you oppress
ed, are you overtaxed, is your property
abused? No sir, none of that. 1 am
not taxed, I am not oppressed and I
ai n't cot no property. I n what way does
the city administration distress you? I
don't know and I don't care a curse;
but I-sav I won't stand it I've stood it
long enough. Things don't go on right
I see it, I hear it. I'll never be content
until there is a general smash up. Mr.
Grumble, the affairs of the city are run
ning smoothly enough. It is difficult to
see how they can be improved. Suggest
a reform. I shan't do it, sir. I don't
onrtliliu' about smoothness and re
form, not a curse; but I do say that
something is got to be done, or I'll know
the reason why. I say, once lor all, un
less something is done, some people had
better look out. This is just about the
sort of wai made on Johnson, and illus
trates the spirit of opposition that par
ent. hm. Such DeoDle run him down
without being able to give a good rea
son for their course. Tbcy are down on
him without knowiog why.

The United States Senate has, for the
last two or three days, been the scene of
conflict between the Grant and anti
Grant Senators. Trumbull, Senator
from Illinois, and a Republican, intro
duced a resolution providing for the ap
Dointment of a committee to investigate
the frauds in the different offices of the
Government. It encountered a storm
of opposition from Administration Sen
ators. This opposition was on, ostensi
bly, party grounds. That is bad enough
but tbere is no reason to doubt that there
lurks a fear in the mind of the Gov
ernment that it is full of rottenness.
It might be iatal to have it ex
posed. Several Republican Senators
and all the Democratic Senators favor
investigation. Heretofore, neither in
this nor any other free government, has
a proposition of this kind been refused.
Suggest to an honorable man in office
that something is supposed to be wrong
in his accounts, and he demands instant
investigation. An officer or government
that is content to rest under a suspicion
of official wrong, suggests a prima facia
cae of guilt But Trumbull s resolu
tion will be voted down, and the Admin
istration will rest under a cloud. What
does it care for clouds or reputation
when it has the keys of the treasury?

favorable to the admission of Foster
Blodsett as Senator from Georgia, and
and G. R. Abbott, from North Carolina
It is expected the committee will render
their report in both cases before the end
of the present week.
Ma. Loicri is, as far as we know, an
inoffensive citizen, but bis pretensions
to the mayorship of Memphis do not
speak well for his discretion. He prob
ably means to take advantage of the
Democratic wrangle to reorganize the
Radical party.

Washikotok, December 15. The
Committee on Foreign Affairs instruct
ed General Morgan to report a bill pro
viding for taking measures to institute a
Joint Committee to run a boundary line
between the United States and British
America, from the summit of the Rocky
Mountains eastward to the Lake of the
Woods.
General Batiks' Lili, making an appro
priation to carry out the provisions of
the Treaty of Washington, will come up
n the House to-day (Friday), and may
lead to a lively debate.
The Executive Committee of the con
vention of steamboatmen, recently in
session at Louisville, had a long confer
ence to-day with the House Committee
on Commerce, and another meeting is
appointed for Saturday. Soma of the
noints to be embraced in the new bill to
be presented to Congress as an amend
ment to the act passed last February,
regulating freight, passage, etc., on
steamboats, and commonly called toe
steamboat law, were considered, among
which were the subject of steam press
ure, the manner of regulating it, the
means of indicating it, and of providing
for the safety of passengers. The com
mittee developed their plains for fixing
the responsibility in the use of boilers,
which provides that the manufacturer
shall stamp on each sheet leaving bis
hands the character of the iron, its ten
sile strength and the name of the man
ufacturer, to protect the boilermaker in
the nse of material. The bill proposes
to bold the boilermaker responsible for
his work.

The President, in reply, accepts the
resignation and gives assurance of his

with pride to the unanimity which con
stantly existed, not only between himself
and Akerman, but also between the lat
ter and the members of the Cabinet.
The Senate executive session ysster-
dav confirmed the following nomina
tions: Geo. H. Williams, Oregon, At
torney General; Geo. H- Baker, Penn
sylvania. Minister to Constantinople
Thomas Bennett, Indiana, Governor of
Idaho, vice Thos. N. Bowen, resigned.
Trumbull's amendment, providing for
a joint committee on retrenchment, was
rejected. The following Republicans
voted in its favor: Alcorn, Fenton,
Patterson, Robertson, Scour, Logan
Sumner, Tipton, Trumbull, West and
Wilson. The debate on the resolution
was very personal at times. Tipton
said the Administration was festering in
corruption. His speech was the most
violent of the day. Trumbull, Schuri,
Morton and Sherman participated in
the debate. Doubts were expressed as
to the Republicanism of Trumbull.
Schurx accused the other Senators of
attempting to stifle investigation.

more business before the recess next
week. The House Committee on Ap
propriations and the House Committee
on Public Buildings and Grounds, had a
conference to-day and agreed finally to
a bill fixing the cost of the new oourt
house, costom-house and postoffice at
Chicago at $1,000,000, including the
grounds.
Many gentlemen in public positions
comnlained that Mr. Akerman did not
answer the purpose of his high position
and hence bis resignation. This opinion
was shared by officers connected with
the Executive Department of the Gov
ernment The precise circumstances
attending the change have not yet trans
pired, but the appointment of Mr. Wil
liams' affords general satisfaction.
A draft for $1512 has been received at
the Treasury Department from unknown
parties for duties in currency, payable at
the port of iiew xork.

one hundred miles of New Orleans,
within four months of signing the arti
cles. Kelley named Rufus flont as

Communists, are in New York. Wro
bleowsky was reported dead.
The suit of Jane Madden against the
Staten Island Ferry company for $j0,
000 damages for the loss of her husband
by the Westfield disaster, resulted in the
same manner as the C rat trial, the jury
ditagreeing, when they were discharged
accordingly.
A meeting of the Board of Police yes
terday discussed the revocation order
of the Governor prohibiting the Inter
national parade. The Commissioners
passed an order directing the Superin
tendent to take all necessary steps to
prevent a breach of the peace, and pro
tect the public from disorder and vio
lence. Major Hall proposed a resolu
tion that the Board of Police memori
alise the Legislature to pass an act to
regulate processions. The resolution
was laid on the table. J
The excitement in financial eirsles
over the failures of the national bank;
continues. Tbere was a run on the
Bank of the Commonwealth yesterday,
in consequence of groandleas rumors,
but the officers of the Clearing House
testified to its solvency, when the excito-
meat abated. The Tenth national
Bank bat been affected by rumors.
OoToroor Hoffman telegraphed to Mr.
Bank), of the International Society, laat
night,' rescinding ths) police order pro
hibiting the parade. He said in the dis
patch that the police authorities had tel
egraphed to him for instructions.

Oodek, Utah, December 15. Three
men named A. Burt, Chief of Police J.
L. Blythe and James Thomas were ar
rested yesterday for the murder of Dr.
J. K. Robinson, in the fall of 18C6.
The circumstances of bis murder, in Salt
Lake City, are as follows: Dr. Robinson
was called up out of bed to visit a man
who had broke his leg, which proved to
be a false pretence in order to allure him
out, when several villains stole on him
from behind and literally nddled nis
body with balls. The Doctor was a Gen
tile, was universally respected by mor
mons and Gentiles, and was superinten
dent of a Presbyterian Sabbath school.
The authorities are after the other as
sassins and entertain sanguine hopes of
capturing them.

fire at Appleton, Wis., last night, on
both sides of the river, destroyed nearly
an entire block. Loss, $150,000; m

The Memphis and St Louis Packet
Company has commenced laying the
foundation of the grain and freight ele
vators at the foot of Beal street Capt
Dodge, superintendent of the works,
left for St Louis a few days ago to se
cure the services of a submarine diver
for the following purpose: Some days
since the workmen placed the end of a
pile on an old wreck thirty feet below
the surface of the river. The steam
hammer, weighing twenty-five hundred
pounds, felt on the bead of the pile, but
the latter glanced out, letting the mass
of iron fall into the river. Being in
thirty feet of water and buried in an
old rock, it was impossible to grapple for
it supcessfuljy. The diver will reach
here this evening, and go down into the
depths to grope for the hammer and the
wreck.

At out o'ol jck last night the premises
No. 1.12 Main, near the corner of Beal,
were discovered to be on fire. In a few
minutes tie engines were at work, but
could not save the building. The house
was a one-story brick, and was occupied
by Mrs. Ella Rierdon and family. The
cause of the lire was accidental, origi
nating from a stove in one of the par
lors. The occupants were at the time
enjoying a hack-ride. The furniture,
which was totally destroyed, was of a
costly description, and was valued at
$1000. It was iusured for $2000 in the
Etna and Hartford insurance com

of the Enchanted Palace form a combi
nation of brilliant attractions. The
Hunchbacks will be presented to-night.
The Abbott Troupe will give a grand
matinee to-morrow and close their en
