Captaiu Mahan'g patent steam canal

J. C, Pickett was placed under $2000
bonds this afternoon by Justice Miller
on the charge of borrowing a horse from
a colored man and disposing of the steed

The Circuit-Court room building was

In the Seoond Chancery Court this
morning Chancellor Scott dissolved the
njuuctiou heretofore granted in the case
of Tho City vs. McCoombs, which in
unction prevented McCoombs from sell
ng or transferring the city stock in the
Missiasippi and Tennessee railroad
amounting to $250,000. This ruling of
Chaucellor Scott leaves McCoombs to
dispose of the stock at pleasure for any
purpose.

kin appeared to considerable advantage
in Rin Van Winkle last night. The
representation of the drunken Dutch
man who associated with the "jolly fel
lers" up the mountain, was an artistic
piece of acting, which was received with
pleasure and applause by the audience,
Joseph Jefferson has made the character
of Rip Van Winkle his own, and stands
unrivaled as its great delineator. Next
to Jefferson Mr. Rankin undoubtedly
gtands. The performance last evening
stamps Mr. Rankin as an actor of supe
rior merit and cosummate ability, be
cause it is no easy task to follow closely
in the tracks of a great actor like Jo
seph Jefferson, who is without a rival Or
peer in this dimcult, because natural
character. To-night Robertson's fine
comedy entitled School will be present-
od with a cast embracing the full
strength of the fine company at present
occupying the boards of the theater.

Memphis Chamber of Commerce and the
Nashville Beard of Trade, Mayor Morris,

chants' tax on last Wednesday at Nash-

Two adroit thieves entered the Bay
Horse suloon through a window, last
night during the absence of the proprie

Duncan Maclean, the visitors departed
through the window. No arrests had
been made up ten o'clock to-day by the
police authorities.

Charles Doyle, a son of the Emerald

last evening, took several drinks, and
lay down on some benches to take a nap.
While so doing the bar-keeper picked his
pocket of ten dollars, and immediately
took a skiff for Arkansas. Doyle swore

The local money market present no
new features (or comment to-day. The
demand for money is about as active as
usual and rates of discount are unal
tered. Prime paper is taken at 10 to 12
ner cent, at the banks, and in the open
market paper scoured by collaterals is
taken and placed at 1 J to 2 per cent per
month.
Nothing: of importance is transpiring
in exchange. There is, however, a
limited amount offering, and we hear of
one bank being a purchaser in New Or
leans. Kate are firm at j to c buying
and par selling on all points
Gold is offered in small amount only
and is bought at 111 by dealers, who
supply the demand at New lork rates.
As was predicted by the LsniiEB a
week og6, local securitie have taken an
upward turn, County warrant are
active speculative demand, now that the
tax books have been turned over to the
tax collector for the collection of taxes
and dealers to-day advanced their selling
rates to 90c." Some of them anticipate
a further advance to 95c, and would buy
now at Hc. Rank of Tennessee money
shares to a certain extent in the excite
ment, a,nd js irregularly quoted at 87
to 8!e lellitig and Mi to VTet buying.
City bonds, currency issues, 55 to
56c buying and gelling; gold issue, 66
to 6Gc. City scrip 78 to 80c buying
and 82c selling. For Mississippi war
rant and Alcorn money there is a de
mand at 80 to 82c, but there are none
on the market. Arkansas levee bonds
were upon the market to-day for hy
pothecation, but no transactions are re
ported. There was also some Peoples'
Insurance stock on the market at 89 to
90c, with no eales. Also some ihares of
the Memphis City Fire and General In
surance Company at 20c, with no trans
action. Some $10,0110 of Memphia and
Charleston railroad stock that was of
fered early in the day at 33c wa ubse
quently withdrawn from the market, the

The probabilities of a rise in lhe up
per streams being more favorable, and
a quite a number of additional boat
have commenced loading for the South
at St. Louis, as noticed in our river
telegram to-dey, freights from that city
to this and other points below are re
ported to have again declined to-day,
and are still on the downward tendency.
This will materially affect the prices of
some articlos, while others will not suf
fer. With the sudden cold weather in
tho bog-raising country in tho North, it
may sensibly affect the price of meat,
as the killing season will have opened in
earnest, and in Hour aud meal the prices
11 doubtless decline to a figure equal
to the fall in freights. Business is mod
erate to day, bt not as active n wa
expected by the merchants earlier in the
week. Prices have undergone no marked
changes since yesterday. Mess pork i
in moderate supply, with a light de
mand at $4 50. Bacon clear Bides are
held at 8j to 9c, clear rib SJto8jc, shoul
ders, r) to Hjc. Lard, 1J, to 10.J for tierce
and 11 to 11 Jc for keg. Breakfast bacon
and ham are unchanged. Bulk sides,
8c. Cora meal is quiet, with a light de
mand at not over $3 15 to 3 20. Corn
is held at 60c for old shelled and 48 to
50c. Out are steady at 00c. Hay is
firm at $29 to $32 for mixed to choice.
Potatoes are $2 75 to $3. Apples, $2 to
$,with choice fancy held at 4 50. Onions
are quiet at $2 'j0 to Butter in better
supply at 21 to 2fc for common to fair
table and 28c for extra choice. Benns
are quiet at $3 to 3 25. Eggs are ateady
at 30 to 31. Cabbage firm at $7 to 9.
Dried apple 5 tofic and quiet. Dried
peaches 6 to 7c, with a good supply.
Cranberries are easier at $12 to II per
barrel. Kraut is quiet at $9 to 10 per
barrel. Bran U quiet at til per ton and
sales of 2255 sacks. Flour is unchanged.
Sugar i steady. Coffee firmer and tend
ing upward. Poultry is quiet at $2 50 to
4 60 for chickens, $8 for geese and $12
to $10 for turkeys." Nails are firm at
$4 75 rates. Bagging is easier, with
sales by the lot to arrive at UiJ to 10jc
for 2 to 21 pound flax and hemp. Cheese
is easier at 15c for factory. Whisky is
unchanged. Lemons are $9 to $10 per
box. Oranges in fair supply at to
$10 per barrel.

The river rose two inches during the
past twenty-four hours, and continues to
rise slowly. The condition of the streams
above are condensed as follows: At
Cairo, weather clear; river rose four
inches!' St. Louis, weather clear and
cool; river stationary. Evansville, clear
and cool; river rose two inohes. Louis
ville, cloudy with rain yesterday; river
rose two inches. Cincinnati, clear and
pleasant; river stationary, with four feet
ten inches in the channel, Pittsburg,
mild; rtver stationary, with two feet in
the channel. Dubuque, cold; river sta
tionary. Business at the landing is ac
tive, and the number of boats arriving
are on. the increase, a many of the large
boat are again being put into service.
The Howard, Shannon, McDonald and
Strader arrived after the close of cur re
port yesterday.
The Shannon added here three hun
dred and fifty bale of cotton.
White river ha four and one-half
feet to Jacksonport, and is about sta
tionary.
The Arkansas is fulling slowly, with
four feet to Little Rock.
Another reduction was made in South
ern freight rates at St. Louis yesterday.
As the river rises freight recedes.
The Celeste will be due from the Ar
kansas to-morrow night.

to morrow evening.
The Louisville and Cincinnati Mail
Line are again placing their large steam
