If a vote were to be taken upon a re

that West Tennessee would cast a solid
vote for a reduction of thirty cents on
the one hundred dollars.
The committee appointed at the rail
road meeting at the Greenlaw Opera
House on Monduy night will meet in a
few days to deviae means for carrying
the railroad to Jefferson, Texas.

The liquor-dealers' asaociatson met

By a gentleman who arrived at noon
from Panola county, Miss., we learn that
the Republican majority in the five
largest precincts was' 1200. There are
five smaller precincts yet .to bear from
which may change the result.
The wires of the Southern Pacific and
Atlantic Telegraph Company are now
open for business to New Orleans and
other Southern 'cities. Our merchants
should not forget, this, rji the Southern
Pacific Company was the first to reduce
the rates of telegraphing to all Eastern
and Northern points.
Mr. Brunce Wynn, '.he young man in
prison at Austin, Miss., for killing a ne
gro, is not, as reported, a son of K. J.
B. L. Wynn. Hit arrest and threatened
foul treatment was a source of anxiety
to his many friends here, and tidings of
him were eagerly sought.
The usual motley assembly of drunks,
disorderlies, etc., were before the Recor
der this morning. A number of co
habitors were fined five dollars each;
fighters, $26; plain drunks, (5; and ex
ponents of the social evil, $10 each.
Thirty-one cases in all were disposed of,
and a good ronnd sum in the way of
fines finds its way into the City Treasury.

An eloction for Representatives and
county officers was held in Mississippi
yesterday. The Radicals put forth eve
ry effort in their power to attain, victory,
and it is feared that they have succeed
ed to a very great extent, thoa gh very
little is dennitely known. Uf four coun
ties in North Mississippi, two Panola
and Grenada are reported to have gone
Republican, and the others DeSoto a id
Marshal Democratic. In both these
Iulter the Radicals had a majority, there
being 42 more negroes than wb.it regi t
tered in the latter county, and about
600 more in the former. In both theiie
counties the Conservatives worked lil:e
Trojans, and if they have been success
ful in overthrowing Radicalism in their
midst, the result ia due sol.ly to their
energy and industry. Tbeaa two coun-
ties are said to hold the balance of pow
er in the State.

An Old Pioneer. Ii I
The Nashville Banner of yesterday
says: Henry C. Meyers, one of the gen
uine stock of Davidson county pioneers,
came into the oily yesterday and drew
his pension as a Boldier in the army of
New Orleans in 1M12. He was born in
Neeley's Bend, seventy-nine years ago.
The houso in which he first drew the
breath of life is still standing, and is
owned and rented by him to n tennut.
Before he was one year old his mother
was compelled to take him in her
lap and ride a distance of Jive
miles to save him and herself from
an attack threatened by Indians.
At tho age of twenty years ho came
to Nashville to learn the trade of a sad
dler, which he subsequently followed for
fifteen years. Shortly niter coming to
this city he joined the army, reaching
New Orleans on the very day he became
of age, with General Jackson, under
whom he afterwards fought. Notwith.
standing his advanced age, he ia re
markably active, and in the enjoyment
of vigorous health. He kept a diary of
his travels in the army, and nothing de
lights him inore than to have an attcii
tive listoner t.i his reminisceuces of the
adventures of X'imself and comrades, all
of whom he rcmcnbers with a distinct
ness which partake..' of the marvelous.

We recently had the pleasure of join
ing in the welcome to our city which was
extended by our Mayor and lrusinets
men to the Tennessee Press delegation.
They had a good time among as, and we
have no fear that they will ever forget
the warm-heartedness of their reception.
We have no doubt they were somewhat
astonished at the vastuess of Philadel
phia, the magnificence and wonderful
beauty of the park, and the number and
immensity of ter manufacturing estab
lishments; but they were probably more
snrprised to find ner eitiaens so kindly
disposed toward the South, and lo ar
dently desirous to "let bygone be by

The demand for money is fair to-day,
'but not, pressing,, and ithej banks are
amply supplied with funds to meet the
wants of the iriercantile community.
Rates of discount at bank are 10 to 12
and in the open market from 1 J to 2 per
cent, per month, tho latter being the
outside rate asked on the least desirable
paper.
Exchange is hnrdly as active to day,
both the offerings nnd demand being
smaller. There are no changes in rates,
however, cither in buying or selling.
Gold Is purchased by dealers to-day at
11(1 to 111, with limited offerings.
Local stocks show no marked changes
nor is there much doing. County war
rants are bought to-day ot 8C to HI'.Jc
and sold at 88c. Tennessee money

landing waa crowded with steam
ers all yesterday evening, giving Mem
phis; with hsr limited wharf facilities
the appearance of a first-class city. The
river rose an inch, and will doubtless go
an inch cr two higher, as the waters
above are rising slowly. '1'hcre is now
scant six feet tu Cairo, and about six
and a half feet over Reeves' bar below,
and seven feet at Helena bur. The
weather to-day is cloudy and mild, with
indications of rain.
The W. J. Lewis came in from below
this morning with thirty bales of cotton
and two thousand and sixty-ninu sacks
seed.
The City of Quincy came in from
above, four and oue-hulf duys out, and
passed down, drawing five anil one hull'
feet
The T. H. Allen came in from the
Arkansas river with two hundred and
fourteen bales of cotton; and the Fort
Gibson brought in scvonty-fuur bales.
The Legal Tender came in from White
river with four hundred and ninety-five
bales cotton, and re-shipped one hundred
and ninety-five nt the mouth of Wlutoj
river for re-shipment to New Orleans.
The Yeager, from St. Louis, had a fair
trip, and added nothing.
The search for the lost Nettie Jones
has been abandoned.

boatmen, held at Louisville on Monday,
a Boatmen's Association was organized,
adopting substantially the same consti
tution and by-laws as those of the Cin
cinnati Association. They also determ
ined to give a banquet to the delegates
to the Convention to-morrow; $5C5 was
raised for that purpose. The directors
of the Association are Frank Carter, A.
Yerhoeff, jr., B. C. Levi, A. T. Gilmorc,
L. B. Dunham, Moses Irwin and It. II.
Wolfolk. The ollicers are: President,
It. H. Wolfolk; Secretary, Adam Way
land. The banquet will bo the affair of
the season, and from the preparations
made will do credit to the Louisville
Steamboatmen's Association. The del
egates representing Louisville in the
Convention are Z. M. Sherley, II. Vcr
hoeff, jr. L. B. Dunham, Moses Irwin,
of New Albany; James Howard, of Jcf

The City of Quincy turns out to have
been the boat mentioned by the Leiiker
nearly a week since as the one thnt
offered equal cabin privileges to the
black and white race. Comment is un
necessary. Yesterday's St Louis Democrat says:

leans tending slightly downward. Flour
by steamer yesterday, 9llc per barrel; by
barges, 80c. The probabilities are fur
lower water. There is no favorable
news from the upper river nor the Ohio.
Tonnage in port for New Orleans is ex
cessive. The Katie P. Kountx will come
off the docks to-dny. She will load for
Red river. The City of Cairo, ('apt. K.
F. Dix's boat, will be off the ways to
morrow, and on Thursday or Friday will
come to the wharf to loud for New Or
leans. St Louis sends seventeen delegates to
the Convention, and all of them go and
will work earnestly in behalf of the com
mon interest.
There are four and a half feet at Dog
tooth. The New Albany Standard, of Satur

About the fourth Iritil of the merits of
the Harrington steam syphon pump (de
signed by its iicent to act as uu equiva
lent for the double-acting donkey pump,
required by a recent act of Congress on

a portion of them, with the nozzle on
end, overboard into the river.
The steamboatmen of Nashville elected
Captain H. H. Harrison a delegate to
the Louisville Convention, and appointed
a committee to revise the lew.
The Lucy Bertram, Kob Roy, and An
dy Johnson are to form a weekly packet
line from Cairo toNewOrleanshereafter.
A telegram of the 4th, from Camden,
Ark., says: "Eighteen inches water.
River falling. Weather clear. No pros
pects of a rise."
