Mr. W. H. Forgoy, the well known
magistrate of the First Civil District,
died in Criltendon county, Ark., yester
day, of bilious fever.
Fifty cases were heard by the Re
corder to-day, and quite a large amount
of money was collected. Frank Morris,
colored kleptomaniac was sent to jail
in default of 11000 bonds.
The lectures on Spiritualism, at the
Greenlaw Opera House, delivered by the
Rev. J. M. Peebles, yesterday, were
largely attended by both believers and
unbelievers.

and Monroe streets, for daily papers
from all points, English, Irish, German
and French papers, illustrated weeklies

The Mississippi State, election takes
place to-morrow. Fears of riots Bnd
difficulties between the whites and blacks
are entertained in many portions of
North Mississippi.
Chief of Police O'Donncll warns dray
drivers, and other knight of the whip,
that it is a misdemeanor to drive with
unnecessary or dungeroiu speed in the
streets. A few arrests vill have a bene
ficial effect.
The Memphis and SKreveport railroad
meeting at the Greenlaw Opera House
to-night will be largely attended. Judge
McAdoo, of Jefferson, Texas, will ad
dress the meeting iu the interest of the
enterprise.
The members of the Memphis bar are
in favor of Representative Harris' bill
to abolish the jury system in civil cases,
unless a jury is demanded in writing on
or before the third day of tho term by
one of the parties itignnt.

Mr. Julius II. Frazier, who was killed
last Saturday afternoon by falling from
the third-story window of the Jackson
block, on Main street, was buried yes
terday in Klin wood Cemetery. Un was
the son of the Rev. Robert Frazier of
Alabama.

appear at the Memphis Theater during
the present season.
The case of F. B. Millard vs. The City
of Memphis, is on trial in the First Cir
cuit Court to-dny. Mr. Millard sues the
city for 110,000 because he (Mr. Millard)
received severe- injuries by falling into
a cistern some months since, which eis
tern he claims was in an unsafe condi
tion and dangerous to passengers.
It is not yet three weeks since we an
nounced the marriage, at Bloomington,
Illinois, of Miss Lutie Temple, one of
the loveliest young girls of this city.
The bridal tour was into Iowa. The
husband, Mr. Irwin, from exposure in
hunting, was attacked with sickness, and
is dead. How brief that wedded life I
Dan Smith, Mike Maloney and Karly
Eson Have been found guilty of mur
der during tbe present term of court.
Smith is under sentence to be hung on
the 2!)th of next month, and the others
will be sentenced in a few days. Four
prisoners are under sentence, in the ag
gregate of eighty-three, of hard labor in
the penitentiary.

residence in Memphis permanently, and

Last evening, about dark, W. M. Mul
lint and Frank Hall, both well known
printers, engaged in a controversy at the
corner of Union and Main street. Mul
lins is said to have struck Hall in the
face, when he taw him mak a move
ment as if to draw a pistol. Hall drew a
bowiu-knifeandatabbedMullinsunderthe
arm and immediately over the left lung.
Mullins fell, and while attempting to
r'me was tubbed twice, once over the re
gion of the kidneys, in the back, and the
other near the right shoulder, over the
lung. The latter wound it not danger
ous, but the other two are supposed to
be mortal. The weapon nsed was a
white-handled bowie-knife, English
make, the blade being one inch wide,
and five and three-fourths inches in
length, and tapering to a point as sharp
as a needle. Immediately after the
stabbing Hall ran away, but was ar
rested soon after by Chief O'Donnell.
The knife was found where it was thrown
by Hall, the blade being covered with
blood. Mullins was conveyed to the St.
Joseph'! Infirmary, on the corner of
Third and Jefferson.
This morning Hull was brought before
the Recorder, and the case was con
tinued over for trial to-morrow morning
at nine o'clock, in order to await a re
port from the attending physicians as
to the condition of Mullins. Dr.
Churchill, the attending physician, and
Dr. Rogers will hold a consultation this
afternoon and examine the wounds re
ceived by Mullins, in order to determine
their character with reference to life
and death. Mr. Mullins feels easy, and
expresses himself with great calmness
as he smokes his cigar. He knows that
his wounds are dangerous and probably
fatal, but he thinks he will yet pull
through." He has no disposition to
prosecute nail, but says Hall ought not
to have stabbed him when he was down
and helpless.

This forenoon the employes at tho
Central Hotel, on Adams street, near
Second, discovered that a person was
lying dead in one of the rooms. The
door being forced open, the deceased wus
found lying on the bed with three vials
of laudanum near by on the table. One
of tbe vials was empty. It contained
one ounce of laudanum, and had been
drained to the last drop by the unfortu
nate, who soon after passed away in
dreams. Coroner Moffutt held an in
quest on the body and discovered the
following facts:
The name of the dead man was R. A.
Sheppard. He was originally from
Shelbyville, Tcnn., and belonged to a
very respectable family. During the
war he joined General Stokes' pilfering
brigade, and remained in that service
until 1805. After the war ho went to
Louisville, Ky., where he married. Be
coming dissipated he soon separated
from his wife and came to Memphis. He
joined a temperance society in this city,
but soon went bock to drink. Of late
he has" been employed by the City Trans
fer CoLipany as an agent. Last even
ing he re.'urned to the Central Hotel in
a state of intoxication, retired to his
room and vas found this forenoon as
above related. The Coroner's jury re'
turned a verdict in accordance with the
above facts.

To-dar Charles Jackson was found
guilty of petit larceny, and was sen
tenced to one year's imprisonment in the
penitentiary.
Peter Rotel was found guilty ot petit
larceny, and sentenced to one day's im
prisonment in the county jail.
S. II. Gibson, indictment for petit lar
ceny, was tried and acquitted by the
jury.
This afternoon the case of the State vs.
J. B. Shelton was called for trial. Some
two years since young Shelton, who was
quite a yooth, fatally stabbed young
Hughes, during a fight between them.
Shelton was tried before the old Circuit
Court, found guilty and sentenced to
three years' imprisonment in the peni
tentiary. A new trial wat granted, and
he was tried before the Criminal Court,
found guilty of involuntary manslaugh
ter, and sentenced to one year's impris
onment in the penitentiary. The Su
preme Court granted a new trial on ap
peal, and the case is again for hearing
before our Criminal Court.

Silias Kearney was tried before 'Squire
Miller to-day on the charge of breaking
into the dwelling-house of Gideon Free
man and taking therefrom one shot-gun,
a pocketliook containing tome money
and other valuables. Kearney wat tent
to jail without bail by the Justice. On
the way to the county jail he made a
confession and informed officer Cox
where he had disposed of the shot-gun.
It was found in the possession of an old

A Western paper says of East Ten
nessee's demagogue: Mr. Horace
Maynard, who hasn't been very particu
lar of lute years in regard to the kind of
company which he kept, has- written to
Bald Katie" Stokes, informing him
that he will stand by him in his troubles
to the bitter end. If any of the descend
ants of the celebrated tribe of Narra
gansett Indians are alive, they will be
gratified by this display of ancestral
blood. If somebody could be found to
stand by Maynard now, Stokes' chances
would be improved.
The Cincinnati Courier (German),
hitherto a strong Grant paper says the
political views and advice of Senator
Schurz will certainly find earnest con
sideration among German-Americans,
and the plau of Mr. Schurz to parsuade
the Democrats not to nominate a candi
date of their own, and not to make a
platform, but to vote for the Republican
new departure candidate, and thereby
secure tho election ot a Republican can
didate fur the Presidency, will be ma

Money.
Hie money market during the week
has shown no decided changes. Depos
itors and customers have been supplied
with all the funds necessary to carry on
legitimate trade, and instead of there
being a pressure for money, as had been
anticipated, the market was compara
tively easy during the entire week at the
old rates.
Exchange has been in fair supply, and
the demand during the latter part of the
week was active. Cotton bills are
bought at 1 to Jc discount on New York
and Boston, Jc discount on New Or
leans and sight checks on all points are
sold at par.
In gold the movement has been light,
and, inve small amounts, purchases
during the week have been light. Buy-
ng rates to-dny are 1 10 to 111.
Local stocks show no marked changes
nor is there much doing. County war
rants have been the chief feature during
the week, and an advance il noticed.
They are bought to-day ot 86 to 87c
and sold at M to K'c. Tennessee
see money is dull at 82 to 83c buying and
85c telling. City bonds, currency issues,
55 to 50c buying and telling; gold issue.
66 to 661c City scrip 78 to 80c buying
and 82c selling. For Mississippi war
rants and Alcorn money there it a de
mand at 80 to 82c, but there are none
on the market. Arkansaa levee bonds
are upon the market in round amounts
with no demand at over 2Sc. Memphis
and Chsrleston railroad stock ii in de
mand at 30c, with no sellers. The price
of that, as well as other stocks, may ad
vance during the next few days.

Business during the past week has
shown no improvement, nor is there a
marked decrease in the sales iu any par
ticular branch of trade. In dry goods
there hits been a fair business done, and
the demand for woolen goods has im
proved, whilo that for cotton goods is
less active. The latter goods have de
clined a fraction in Eastern mnrkets, and
our leading merchants have reduced
ther prices fully one-half cent. The
movement in boots and shoes is active,
and shows nn increase over the corre
sponding week lust year. Prices hove
undergone no marked changes, and col
lections are reported excellent In
hardware a fair amount of business has
been done, anil in liquors tho trade,
though not brisk, has been fully up to the
expectation of dealers. In the general
market there have been but few changes
in prices of the leading articles. Re
ceipts of produce have been large. Pro
visions declined a fraction during the
week, bnt are firmer to-Jay. Mess pork
is quoted at,$14 50. Bacon clear sides

ton. Flour is quiet but firm. Sugar ii
steady. Coffee is firmer and tending
upward. Advices received to-day con
firm the report of a short crop in Brazil,
and also report a prospect of a still
further advance in the East. Molasses
is steady and unchanged. An advance

RIVER, BUSINESS, MISCELLANEOUS.
The river has fallen two inches since
Saturday, and is falling slowly to-day.
White and the Arkansas each have a good
boating stage, and are declining slow
ly. From here to Helena five and a hulf
feet of water is reported over the shoalest
point, which is at Reeves', and hence to
Cairo there is six feet. Business at the
landing yesterday was fair. The Osage
brought 251 bales of cotton, and lays
up. Tho Commonwealth, ten days out,
came down, and laid over until this
morning, adding nothing of importance.
The Lady Lee, five days out, had a fair
trip. The Durfee and Capitol City left
early yesterday fur the south, adding but
little. The St. Franois brought Sltibules
of cotton and 253!) sacks seed from the
St. Francis river. The Belle of Pike
brought 350 tons of produce from above.
The Heilman, from Cairo, had a good
trip.
The F. Forrest ouiiie in to-day
with 159 bales of cotton and 100 sacks of
seed. The Sioux Cily brought in 3(4
bales of cotton. The Phil AHiu arrived
with 454 balei of cotton and 7 sacks
af seed. The Julia, Henry Ames, Min
nie and Colorado are due from above,
The weather is clear and pleasant.
The St. Francis leaves to-morrow for
Helena and the St. Francis river.
The delegates elected to the Louis
ville convention will leave to morrow for
Louisville.
Owen G. Cstes, purser of the Dexter,
is in the city.
The K, P. Walt is reported hard
aground at the foot of Bordeaux chute.
After getting aground the mate of the
Walt, Dan Starr, took the boat's yawl,
and with a half dozen of the crew started
to find the channel. Soon after leaving
the Walt the yawl sprung a leak, and
duringthe excitement which followed it
was capsized. Two of the men were
drowned, and the other four saved,
Starr was picked up by the St. Francis
when ife was nearly extinct.
George Todd, a passenger on the
Commonwealth from St. Louis, was ar
rested yesterday lor beating a young
man named Burns in an unmerciful
ninnner,
The Legal Tender leaves for White
river to morrow.
The snagboat S. S. Thayer arrived
from above yesterday at noon, and will
go to White river to work.

Lennox, is annouced for St. Louis to
day at five p.m. Charles P. Hough is

The popular A. J. White, Captain
George Malone, leaves as aboto this af
ternoon at five o'clock, Barney Barinds,

The elegant passenger steamer Julia,
Captain George Townsend, leaves this
evening for Vicksburg and the bends.
James Thompson is her clerk.
Louisville steamboatmea will be rep
resented by ten delegates to the conven
tion. The latest telegrams report ten feet
rise at Shreveport, and the water still
rising wilh eight feet in the channel.
An eight inch rise ii reported at St.

The steamlioatmen of Louisville have
invited Seuator Morton, Hon. S. M.
Kerr and John Coburn, of Indiana, and
