lature has recommended bills for tho

The work of boring for a foundation

The new Silsky Kotary Mteam Fire
Engine, purchased by the city for the
boys of Engine House No. 4, on Main
street, was thoroughly tested yesterday
at the corner of Main and Madison, The
engine ii of first class, a perfect beauty,
and is called tbe Washington No. 4.
Ten pounds of steam were made ia three
minutes after smoke issued from the
stack; in four minutes twenty-four
pounds of steam were made.
THi TEST.
Six hundred feet of hose were Un
reeled, and the Washington threw water
through a -inch nozzle over the jack'
staff of the Odd Fellow's Hail, a height
of aboet one hundred and fifty-five feet,
This was done under a pressure of ev
enty-fire pounds of steam. Two streams
were thrown through an inch nozzle 210
feet. One stream through 600 feeet of
hose, l-inch nozzle, was thrown 201
feet Through 100 feet of hose, 1 inch
nozzle, a stream was thrown 2G.'t feet.
The trial test was witnessed by a large
concourse of citizens, and was regarded
as satisfactory. Mr. Brown, the engi
neer who came with the Washington,
claims that the water in the cistern was
too dirty and foamed in the boiler, there
by preventing a thorough test of the
powers of the Silsby. lie expressed a
desire to give the Washington a more
thorough test to-day, believing she would
do. better.

When the cistern had been opened
near the engine one of the nieu pliintri j
a torch into it and an explosion followed
immediately. The gas generated in the
cistern proved to be as explosive as non
explosive oils, kerosene, etc, Two of
the firemen had their hands and faces
burst by the rush of flame from the cis
tern. If all our cisterns are charged
with this explosive gas, we have the ma
terial for a little earthquake in our midst.

attracted so much attention during the
week, was awarded the blue ribbon and
diploma. The committee were highly
pleased with the working of the machine,
The linter is an extra attachment to tbe

A party of Raleigh Nimrods passe.

of our sister State. Bear, deer and
ducks will have to get out of the way of
the Raleigh boys, who carried a swivel
gun, to mount on a canoe, for the pur
pose of slaughtering feathered game by
wholesale at long range.
General Breckinridge arrived iii the
city yesterday. The railroad men
the Memphis and Charleston railway
gave a dinner at the Peahody, which was
attended by General Breckinridge. The
railroad connections through tha States
of Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabam
were discussed, and numerous toasts
were responded to during the repast,
The trial test of the new engine inter
fered with the running of the street cars
yesterday on Main street, but a transfer
of passengers was made at the corner of
Main and Madison. The fire-engine test
being of much more importance to the
citizens than a little delay on the street
railway, none outside of the railway
superintendent regretted the interference
with travel.
The negro found dead in Wolf river
swamp was inqitcsted by Esquire Spell
man yesterday. An empty pistol found
lying by the side of the corpse and a
bullet bole in the head of the deceased
induced the jury to return a verdict of
suicide a fact which might or might not
be true, no light being discovered which
could explain the deed other than that
cast by tbe appearance of the body and
the suspicious pistol.
Mrs. Leary, and her husband Tim
i.eary, whose cow has been charged with
the crime U Uestroying Chicago, have
made affidavits before a magistrate that
no such Sticking was ever done by any
cattle of theirs, but that the barn or cow
house was set on fire by some incendiary.
They say they never had a kerosene
lamp on their premises, aad lost aix
hundred dollars in cow flesh by the fire.
This statement relieves Mr. and Mrs,
Leary from the necessity of paying
1:100,000,000 in damages to the smoked
out Chicagoans.

railroad train and robbed the Express
safe of five thousand dollars. The rob
bers are believed to be part of a gang
of Chicago thieves who, since the de
struction of that cify, bare migrated to
Southern latitudes. Our authorities
will have to keep a sharp look out for
theae birds of prey who escaped the
lamp-post penalty inflicted on tbe Bar
ney Aaron gang in the doomed city of
the lakes.

Memphis Theater. The Fair One
with the Blonde Wig was presented by
the Oates Comic Opera Company last
night to a large and fashionable audi
ence, the extravaganza is full of good
hits, good acting and singing. The
quartette "Come where my love lies
dreaming," sung by Mrs. Oates, Messrs.
Drew, Allen and Crane, was a musical
gem, and deservedly encored by the de
lighted audience. The amusing quatrain,
If ever I cease to love," by the troupe,
and Good-by, sweetheart, good-by," by
Crane (after the style of Brignoli), were
greeted with roars of laughter. As usual,
Mrs. Oates was the life of the company.
Uer piquant, captivating style of acting,
and her musical warblings, took the
house by storm. With Lydia Thompson
Mrs. Oatos fairly divides the honors of
the burlesque stage. To-night the at
tractive fairy extravaganza, The Flower
Girls of Paris, will be preseuted. To
morrow evening Mrs. Oatos will take a
benefit, and it is needless to predict that
she will be greeted by an immense house.

La., reached the city last evening, and
put up at the Peabody. Col. Moon Bays
there is no yellow fever in the Crescent
City, and but little business going on,

streams materially interfering with all

trade.

strong was placed under $2000 bonds on
the charge of stealing eighteen dollars
from an old darky, Samuel Shelton,
and was indicted by the grand jury this

horse-thief, pleaded not guilty, but the
testimony proved him otherwise, and he
was sent to Jail in default of bail

The suburbs of Memphis are designated
by curious names not set down on the
city map. So it is with streets and
alleys, (hat secure names from' some
person residing near by, or some event
taking place in the vicinity. Yesterday,
in a crowded Poplar street car, a lady
sprang to her feet, and reaching fran
tically but unsuccessfully for the bell
rope, exclaimed, "Well I declare, I be
lieve we have passed Cow alley." A
venerable legal brother, with the utmost
gravity and politeness, replied to the
lady t speech by saying: "Madam, Cow
alley Ts not on this street, but Bull Run
is on the next square probably you
have confounded the names." The
passengers smiled audibly at the grave
Bpeech, the lady looked confused, and
the attorney looked as if he would like
to explain his explanation ere he left
the car.

the State was opened this morning in an

An auti water citizen of Memphis,
whose regard for whisky and contempt
for Water are well known, in order to

Salvio l'acheco, of Contra Costa county,

ing on the Memphis and Charleston rail
road, as well as on other roads leading
to this city, and I do not hesitate to sav
that the Old Reliable is the best of

Court The cases are called rapidly,
and it requires the greatest legal knowl
edge to know bow to get up the cases,
defend the prisoners and secure the fees.
Five and ten dollars, or even a smaller
amount of fractional currency, consti
tute the maximum fees gathered by the
ndustrious attorneys. In the majority
f cases the defendants are guilty, and
defense is entirely unnecessary, but
criminals darkies especially delight
n having a lawyer, and the latter is
nothing loth to cater to this feeling.

merchants in St. Louis yesterday were
at Mc for clear sides, with that market
firm. Prices here will remain firm for
sometime, and no reduction is antici
pated until the new crop comes in. Clear
sides to day are held firmly at 9c, clear
rib at 8j toJo, and shoulders Hj to Hjc.
Lard and other hog products are steady
but unchanged. Corn is in fuir supply,
with sales of 200 sacks new shelled, in
new sacks, ut 70c. Oats are dull, with
sales at 4Xc. Bran is steady at r'-li to 27.
Hay is easier with an improved de
mand for common. One car-load of
Arkansas prairie sold to-day at
$IH and could not have been re
placed at less than $19. Flour is a
shade easier, with sales of 100 barrels X
at $t 25, and small lots of fancy at
$H 45. Corn meal shares in the depres
sion of prices, and those who ou yester
day were holding at $3 50 delivered are

is fairly active, with but little choice in

The Washington correspondent of the
St Louil Republican telegraphs that the
Board of Steamboat Inspectors are very
ndignant relative to the dispatches
which have been sent, purporting to be
reports of their proceedings. The. Board
state that all such dispatches are bogus,
and that all the information which it is
politic lo make public is furnished to
the press associations. Another dis
patch dated the 2,'(d says: The Super
vising Steamboat Inspectors were en
gaged to day in the consideration of the
question of storage of cotton on steam
ers, with the view of additional safety in
its carriage." Some inventive genius
should patent a covering of brown paper
and coal oil to be placed upon each bale
before the cotton is loaded on boats, then
buttonhole one of the Inspectors, pre
sent him with a house and lot in Louis
ville, and the Board would adopt the
patent unanimously.
Yesterday's St. Louis Republican says
there is no use in disguising the fact
that business at tbe port of St. Louis
is now more dull than known before -at
least in the last twenty years.
The Legal Tender will make a trip to
the mouth of White river, in the inter
est of the Adams line, connecting with
the Celeste for Pine Bluff and Little
Rock, leaving to-morrow evetiin..
The St. Paul Pioneer has the follow
ing: I he river still holds its own at its
advanced stage, and that is all. The
hopes of a still greater rise are not likely
to be realized, and in all probability in a
day or two we shall have to once more
take up the old story about the water
falling.

the landing actually belong to? If the
railroad company uses the public land
