Great Fires in Ancient Historic.?Fire
has ever been at once the greatest blessing and
scourge of the human race. While minister to
human want?, it has never failed to give to war
redoubled horrors, and invest peace with uncertainty
and dread. The dreadful scenes at
the fall of Troy are invested with a lurid, ghastly
splendor when Homer describs the demoniac
flames Bursting irorn me aevoieu city, iuariug
and battling with the clouds, while the Greeks,
frenzied with victory, and maddened by their
ten years' abseucc from their wives and children,
rush through the blazing streets and
slaughter the Trojans in their ancestral halls.
When Alexander returned from the Hydaspes
aud entered Peraepolis. the mysterious and
wonderful capital, ho revenged himself for the
Grecian cities which had been ravaged with
tire and sword 170 years before by burning
that city, of which the sublime Chehelminar,
or Forty Pillars, alone remain to bear actual
evidence of its former greatness. A century
later the world was appalled by the conflagration
that swept Carthage into oblivion. In
her last uielaucholy struggle with Home,
/Kmilianus, the besieging general, carried fire
10 be applied to the houses as the only means
of gaining a footing within the walls. The city
was allowed to burn six days, when the flames
were extinguished. On her final subjugation,
Rome's inexorable decree, "Carthago delenda
est," was earned into effect The city was
-et on tire, and in many quarters at once the renewed
conflagration raged with incredible fury
for 17 days. Here, unlike at Chicago, the flames
were assisted rather than resisted by man; but
so vast in extent aud so fiilled with treasure
was the African metropolis, that for 23 days
the smoke of her burning palaces and warehouses
ascended.
In time Rome herself was burned. The
flames raged for six days and seven nights, and
out of fourteen quarters, only three escaped
unharmed. The origin of this dreadful calamity
is involved in doubt, although the frequeut
occurrence of minor fires in Home lends prob..VvIliM*

eident. So common were conflagrations in
Rome that Crassos amassed much of his great
wealth by speculating on these calamities.?
When a fire broke out he would hasten to the
scene with a gang of slaves, and would induce
the affrighted householders to part with their
burning property at considerable under its
value. He would then employ his slaves in
arresting the flames, and afterward would have
the buildings repaired. In this way he became
landlord of a great part of Rome.
Constantinople has suffered most of all places
from fire.* Early in the reign of Justinian it
was the scene of the greatest conflagration
known in history, and to the present day the
Turkish capital retains its proverbial liability to
the ravages of fire.

The Chicago Tribune Building was the
finest building of the kind in the world. We
say this advisedly, and with a full knowledge
of the offices of the New Jfork Herald and the
Philadelphia Ledger. These are indeed magnificent
structures and admirably constructed
for the business; but peither is so fine, so
complete in all its arrangements, as was the
Chicago Tribune building. It was erected during
1868, at a cost, if we recollect correctly, of
about $375,000, which sum* ot money was
made by the Tribune newspaper in a period of
uineteen months. The building wasof a beautiful
stone of a light gray color,, of a beautiful
bright lustre, but not glaring like white marble.
It was four stories in height, the press, folding,
aud mailing rooms being in the basement, the
counting-room on the ground floor, the editorial,
proof-reading, library, and composition
rooms occupying the whole of the fourth story..
They were magnificent apartments, supplied
with every convenience which can be conceived.
The pressrooms contained fwo eight-cyliuder
Hoe presses, one ot which is said to have
been the finest machine of the kind in the
world. Its coast was $32,000. The other has
long been used iu the offiee, but was kept in
plaee, so as to be used in case of accident to
i he oue which regularly did the work for the
daily paper. The greatness of this establishment
may be conceived when we state that the
expense of news editors, correspondents, &c.,
is about $10,000 a week. The profits from advertising
alone, ou a single issue of the Sunday
Tribune (it is printed every day and Sunday,
too.) have, on more than oue occasion, been iu
exees of $1,500. The daily sales of the paper
ure about 40,000 copies. There are also triweekly
and weekly editions, which have extensive
circulation through the Northwest.
The first (except the counting-room), se-
second, and third floors ot the Tribune build- I
iug were occupied as stores and oftioes. The
destruction of so grand# and beautifnl a build- I
ing must be regarded as a great calamity, and
cannot be considered without feclincs of sadness.

the IV. of France, that he twice whipped his
sou, Louis the XIII, irith his owu hand; tlie
first time because he had taken such a dislike
to a gentleman, that his servile attendants
could only appease him by pretending to shoot
with a pistol without ball the object of his
aversiou, the second time for crushing the head
of a sparrow. Though small in comparison
with the unjust punishment he had iuflictcd,
his mother objected to this discipline of her
son. "Pray to God," replied Henry, "that 1
may live, for when I'm goue, he will ill treat
you." The experience of the king had taught
him that cruelty seldom knows any distinction,
and that he who begins by crushiug the heads of
sparrows in sport, would end by directing his
venom against the mother that bore him. The
prediction was verified to the letter.?Quarterly
