Tha engineer at Honk's eoal bank fell a dis
tance of forty feet dan the shaft, breaking sev
eral bones and getting somaahat bruised. His
injuries are net supposed to be fatal.
Tha Canton Star Minstrels, thirteen in number,
gave a performance last Saturday evening to a
good house. They are creditable performers all,
and several of the youths give evidence of talent.

tion of our city, will give a seriea of Read
ings and Recitations in the Opera Houe,
on Wednesday evening next. The pro
ceeds of the entertainment will go toward
the purchase of the new orgaa for the
church We hope to see the Opera Uouee
"filled with an appreciative audience.
Prof. Evans occupied the Opera House
for two evenings a few weeks ago. and
those who then heard bim desire to hear
bim again. His readings from Dickens,
svnd his recitations from other authors are
admirable and never fail to raise admira
tion to loud applause. We assure our
friends that it is a rich treat to hear Mr.
Evans.

A Surprise A young lady at Miner
va, says the Commercial, one night last
week. wbile deliberately engaged undress
ing herself for bed and while seated on a
chair with one foot upon her knee untying
the caiter was ereatly surprised when
rat sprang from under the bed upon her
leg and obtained a hiding place in the
snowy (olds of her under linen. It is
needless to attempt to describe the
screams that startled that household and
the neighbors. Hisratship even became
alarmed and went back into his hole.
Was it a Murder In the summer
of 1S70 some children were rambling over
the farm of James H Moffit, inst east of
Louisville, in this county, picking a few
berries, when they found concealed under
some briar bushes a satchel containing
woolen socks and sonje Sunday school
cards, Of course, this circumstance gave
rise to some talk and wonderment, but
soon was almnet forgotten.
Last May. however, when Mr. Moffit'
boys were engaged picking and removing
stones from one of his fields, they found a
pair of boots and wollen socks that has
been concealed. The boots were calf skin
No 9. This revived the matter of the
satchel, but also soon measurably died
away.
About the middle of last October, how
ever, a further discovery was made, tome
boys were gathering beech nuts in the
woods east ot Mr. Moffit's, and while scrap
ing and searching beside an old log, they
found a pair of pants with blue suspenders
and a woollen Blurt with halt ot right
sleeve cone two boles in iront and a cu
in the baclf. l he shirt also seems to nave
been bloody. Putting all these things to.
trether we ask, was there a murder?
Whose clothing were they? How came
they there? Full answers to these queries
might explain the mystery.
