THE SEA OF GALILEE.
What the traveller will see when be
catches bia first eager glimpse of tbe
limpid nheed of water will be a small
oval shaped lake, thirteen mi'es long
and six teroad. It is evidently of vol
canic origin, and the earthquakes
which have rent tbe wall of Tiberias,
as well as the hot springs at several
places in the vicinity of tbe lakehow
that volcanic agencies are still at work.
All along tbe eastern side runsa green
plain, which, except at one spot (the
probable scene of the destruction of
the swine after tbe healing of the Gad
aren demoniac,) is everywhere about
a quarter to a half a mile in width.
Beyond this riaes. to the height of
about ,000 feet, art escarpment of
desolate-looking hills, scored by vari
ous ravines, and having a plateau at
the top. As there are neither trees
nor villages to be seen on that side,
and no signs of cultivation. The view
in that direction has a certain mono
tony, but this is atoned for by tbe
air of mvsterv derived from its verv
desolation, and from the fact that
even in our Lord'd time it was so un
frequented that He had but to visit it
when he reauired the refreshment of
solitude. It was of this lovely shore
that we are reminded in the lines of
the beautiful hymn
"Corns to a desert place apait,
And rest a little while,'
Bo spake the Lord when mind and heart
Were faint and sick through toil."
It was somewhere among these fea
tureless hills, probably toward tbe
north-eastern corner of the lake, that
he fed the 5,000 who Lad flocked after
him on foot; it was somewhere about
those gray ravines that He spent tbe
nigbt in prayer. And how many
trmes must his eve have rested with
pleasure on the dimpllDg surface of
tue tuiana sea a sight delightful in
any region of the world, but doubly
refreshful and delicious in this sultry

Use of Tau-Bark.
A correspondent wishes to know if
tan-bark is a good material for ma
nure, of it we would advise the use
of spent bark on clay or sandy soil
which Is badly worn.
We consider tan-baik of very little
value aa a manure, and on some soils
an ausolute injury unless well de
cayed, and years are required for that
process. On a heavy clay,, tan-bark
may be oT some benefit as a loosener
of tbe soil, to lighten it up so that
veeetation can draw the nrimitlve
elements. As a mulch for strawber
ries it answeres a torable purpose,
but -3 a muloh generally, we should
prefer many other materials: as an
absorbent for stable use, It is not val
uable, nor is sawdust, when so many
better materials can so easily be ob
tained. We would not haul tan-bark
twenty rods for any purpose unless
for bouse banking or some similar
use, and would not allow it to be put
upon good loamy soil If. the work

gaged in an actual stuggle for exist
ence with the wild beast of the forest
and the poisonous reptiles of the
plain, and it is not too much to sav
that, as a general thing, the eamieora

The annual report of tbe State Liq
uor Agent of Massachusetts shows
that during tbe year ending October
only tuirty-mne cities ana. towns
in the Commonwealth purchased
liquor of the agency, ana that tbe
amount of sales was about $100,000
less tbau duringnbe previous year.
This would seem to afford agratlfying
evidence of. the progress of temper
ance in Massachusetts bat tha fact is
that under the operation of the pro
hibitory law therois so little difficulty
procuring liquor without, reatriso
tion, that few towns find it werth
their while to avail themselves of the
State Agency to obtain -spirits for
medicinal or other necessary uses.
As it costs, the fctate $11,124 to sell
worth of liquor, the people are
urging the propriety of discontinuing
the official runishop.
