A THRILLING SCENE
Narraw Escape of Six Hen from
s Terrible Death

It was a trilling scene that was enact
ed on Madison street near La Salle on
Saturday afternoon
Tlie raging hurricane that sprung up
so suddenly in the southwest and swept
savagely through the city wrenching off
signs and shutters tumbling church
steeples from their towers and toppling
both finished and unfinished structures to
tlie earth have already been duly chron
icled The cases of bodily injury slight
as well aa serious have mostly been
reported aiul have received tlie usual
comment but a narrow escape from a
horrible death that occurred at the locality
indicated is worthy of inure than a mere
paragraphic notice
On a scaffolding some 45 feet from
the ground of a new brick building now
erecting by James B Shakes Esq six
men were at work On this scaffolding
were two of tlie large braziera containing
the glowing coals which the indomitable
rebuilders of Chicago use to keep their
hands from freezing as they lay the brick
and stone in the chilling days of winter
When tlie fierce blasts of wind dashed
through tlie city these workmen in com
mon no doubt with thousands of others
contemplated tlie expediency of hurry ing
to tlie ground to avoid being blown from
tlioir insecure stations They were all
old masons and concluded to hang ou
and work away in spite of the tempest
Blit while they were turning afj'aiu
resolutely to their labors a gust of wind
heavier than any of its predecessors sud
denly overturned one of the iire-caul-droiis
The blazing brands and coals
fell upon the scaffolding and rolled over
to the ground beneath one piece falling
upon the shoulder of a mortar-carrier
named Michael Folger igniting his
clothes aud burning his face so badly
he will be incapacitated for work for sev
eral weeks
But it was on tho slender scaffolding
above that the scone of terror was devel
optd The draft of the wind fanned the
iut coals to a flame rad in an instant
ie planks upon which were standing tlie
six masons were ablaze
The first man to notice the danger was
Jason Keilson a Norwegian who was
less than a foot from the flames and who
might easily have kicked over the coal
and smothered the blaze Instead of
this however ho uttered a cry of horror
and sprang upon the edge of the wall
His exclamation attracted the attention
of his comrades to the peril iu which they
were plaoed rad a rush for a position ol
safety followed Two of the men a Mr
Watson who was the “boss” of the brick
laying party and a mason named tiiever
stan Knudd gained the ladder Two
others whose names were not teamed
threw their arms aud legs around one of
the poles that supported one end
while just as the frail board snapped in
two the last man Andrew Reardon
jimipid impulsively anil caught by his
arms over tu unfinished edge of the wall
As the plank parted the ladder fell
forward aud humping against tlie build
ing nearly shook Watson and Knudd
from their perch aud crushed the fingers
of Kniidd’s left' hand These two men
were now however safe but there were
still the two who were clinging to the
pole and Rea-lon who hanging to the
edge of tlie building was certain to
liecmne too weak to retain his grip ranch
longer in the fearful gale At this junc
ture and while the crowd below were
twisting another ladder ti come to tlie
rescue the supid Keilson who might
Imve'avorted the whole trouble seemed
to recover his senses Creeping alonj
the top of tlie wall he laid hold of
Readon and assisted him to scramble to
a safer perch
Another ladder was by this time ran
up to where the two men were clinging
to the pule and they were helped down
as were also io a few miuutsa more
Readon and Keilson white the ropes
which held the hissing planks were cut
away and the burning timbers dropping
to the ground were soon extinguished
When it is stated that directly beneath
the scaffold there was a heap of bricks
miscellaneous files of heavy timbers and
several barrels of cement it will lie seen
that had any of the men fallen- they
would have been dashed to death
Altogether the accident waa one of the
most singular all its details considered
that has yet nociired in this excited sea
son of peculiar casualities

Burglars sometimes meet with most
unexpected receptions aud the dangers
of their trade are not small The body
of “Billy” Healey a noted burglar was
found tlie other day in the brass foundry
of George E Parker on Ferry street
near the Centre Street Depot with a load
from a gun trap in his side He bad
beyond a doubt met his death while
engaged in a burglary His death was
not discovered until many hours after it
had occurred About 4 (clock Mr
Parker went to his factory for the pur
pose of seeing that ail was right and
found that a panel hnd been forced from
one of the doors lie entered the build
iug and there discovered the body of
Billy Healey lying on the floor By his
side was found a number of pieces ol
brass and a quantity of material which
he was probably in the act of removing

The shot was not heard or if hoard
attracted no attention and as the door
whs closed passers-by during tlie day
had not noticed that all was not as it
should lie Healey waa one of tho worst
men about Newark though sill young

He was however a trimmer by trade
aud sometimes followed that occupation
He had been once in the State prison
and had been pardoned a year ago
