New Yort, December 22.? The
authorities state no further arreato of
persons implicated in the robberies of
the Tammany Ring frill be made till
after Christmas.
The Grand Jury came into the Court
of General Sessions this afternoon and
handed Reoorder Hackett papers signed
by the jurort, stating that baring at
the request of Judge Bedford irfveetiga
ted the charge against him of receiving
$5500 in a fraudulent manner from the
City Treasury, they are of the opinion
that said charge is unjust and unfounded
and that Judge Bedford was justly and
equitably entitled to this amount for
extra services rendered as Assistant
District Attorney, from 1854 to I860.
Connolly's Bail ImwI).
The counsel for Connolly state that his
bail is now ready for him in the civil
suit, and that if Judge Bedford should
fix the bail on the iadictment found
against him at a reasonable amount it
will also be given so as to enable the ex
Controller to spend the Christmas holi
days with his family. Connolly is still
suffering from ill health, and all his
friends are very 'anxious to secure his
release.
The examination in the case of Chas.
Collender, bank examiner, who is
Charged with Receiving Bribes
from the Ocean Bank, was commenced
to-day before Commissioner Oaborne.
Mr. Joseph Bell appeared for the de
fense. The only witness called was
Theodore M. Davis, receiver of the
Ocean Bank. He deposed that he found
among the assets of the bank checks
for several thousand dollars in the name
of Collender, but against them, as
security, there were bonds, promisory
notes, etc., to the value of from $70,000
to $80,000. The examination was then
adjourned.
The Quarantine Abuses.
Thecommittee appointed to inquire
into the quarantine abuses held a eeoret
session in the Chamber of Commerce
to-day. It is expected that their report
will be made public in a few days.
Several prominent merchants and
agents of steamship lines have been be
fore the committee with reference to
these abuses.
Minister Sickle*.
Among the passengers by the steam
ship Cuba, which arrived this afternoon,
were General Daniel E. Sickles and his
bride. The steamer was met at quar
antine by the revenue cutter Northerner
on which was a party of the General's
personal friends. After landing, the
party was immediately driven to the
Brevoort House. The General states
that he intends returning to Spain in
about a month or six weeks. He says
be has brought important matter for
the State Department, touching upon
our relations with the government at
Madrid and relating especially to Cuba.
It is probable that a public reception
will be tendered bim in this city. The
General stated this afternoon that he
has no desire for a reception, but leaves
the matter entirely to his friends.

Cold weather has sensibly abated in
severity; snowing; at 7 o'clock ther
mometer was 11? above zero; at noon it
was 20?, this afternoon it was 22? above.
Snow commenced falling about noon
and has continued with indications of
a heavy storm. North river is filled
with floating ice and navigation is
seriously impeded.

This morning the elegant mansion of
Henry B. Beck, corner of Fifth street
and Broadway, Morrissinia, took fire
and together with valuable furniture
was destroyed. The fire is supposed to
have originated from heat Loss about
$32,000. Insured for about $25,000.
At half past twelve o'clock this morn
ing a fire broke out on the second floor
of 349 Canal street, occupied by An
thony Long, bon n et frame man u factnrer.
Damage $50,000; insured for $30,000.
The first floor was occupied by Johnson
Co., dry goods merchants. His loss
was $30,000. The building was dam
aged to the extent of $10,000.
Presentation.
The parlors of the elegant mansion
of Hon. G. C. Barrett, Judge e'ect of
the Supreme Court, 24 West Thirty
eighth street, was thronged last night
evening by distinguished lawyers who
had gathered to witness the presenta
tion to the Judge of a Pompeian bronze
bas relief of himself by the junior
members of the bar. Speeches were
made and responded to and a sumptu
ous repast partaken of by the gueetfl.
The bust was executed by Byron M.
Packer and is a beautiful work of art.
The Amnesty Bill.
A Times special, dated Washington,
December 22, says: "The amnesty bill,
upon which the Senate has been en?
gaged for two days, and which it was
agreed should be voted ou to-day, has
nevertheless been turned over as un
finished business when it meets after the
holidays. Several causes combined to
bring about this result, but most of all
the cause of delay was the real. feeling
of the Senate on the question of am
nesty.
."Indictments are in course of prep
aration Jagainst persons for defrauding
the Government several years ago.
There is no statement given of the time
when the arrest will be made, but the
names are withheld from the public
until that time. The evidence at hand
is such as to juetify the expectation of
recovering a great many thousand dol
lars in a successful criminal prosecu
tion.

Hadley, of Arkansas, has as ye t taken
no action in the Chicot riot, saying that
he will await a report from his Adju
tant General. About three hundred
negroes, variously armed with syringes,
shot-guns, pistols, <fcc., part of whom
came from Arkansas by the ferryboat,
left here to-night on the evening boat
for Helena, ostensibly destined for that
point, but it is almost certainly known
that they are going to Chicot to assist
their brethren. As yet there is no fur
tber intelligence from that point. The
negroes still hold the town.
Information has just been received
by li^or Jno. Adams, that the steamer
Rose, a stern wheel boat, owned by the
Memphis and Arkansas River Packet
company, and plying in the New Orleans
and Arkansas river trade, struck a hid
den obstruction on Wednesday, in the
Arkansas river, thirty miles above its
mouth, and sunk in four feet of water.
She was valued at $20,000 and insured
in Pittsburgh offices for $10,000. Her
cargo, consisting of 1000 bales of cot
ton for New Orleans, will be nearly all
saved, and it is expected that the boat
will be raised without great difficulty.

Mead, of New York, who brought suit
against John Kilgour, of this city, for
monies lost in Morrisey's gambling
house, was arrested in Chicago this
rooming on a warrant sworn out by
Kilgour tor threatening him with per
sonal violence.
Three boys, Lee Gravenor, Wm Coon
and Chas. Fallett, were drowned at
Marietta, O., yesterday evening, while
skating.
A three story residence at Riverside,
one of the prettiest places in this vi
cinity, was destroyed by fire last night.
Loss, $10,000 to $15,000.
INDIANA.
Railroad Aeridcnt.
Indianapolis, December 22. The
train due here on the Cincinnati and
Indianapolis Junction road at 1:20
P. M., was thrown from the track by a
broken rail about five miles east of
Morristown, wrecking the train and
killing M. B. Flenner conductor Jas.
Hamilton, engineer, and Patrick
Kilory, section foreman, The baggage
master had one arm broken, and several
passengers were injured. The train
has not yet arrived here, and the
names of the injured can't be ascer
tained at this hour.
PHILADELPHIA.

Philadelphia, December 22. This
morning the Whiting works of John
Petit it Co., New Market street, was
completely destroyed by Are. A large
quantity of valuable machinery was
destroyed, worth $25,000. Insured for
$10,000, the building was insured for
$6000. The roofs of two adjoining
buildings caught fire, causing great ex
citement among the inhabitants, who
rushed half clad into the cold to save
their lives. The buildings were, how
ever, saved from destruction.

Increasing eastern winds with rising
temperature are probable for Saturday
throughout the Atlantic States; snow
being followed by rain in the Middle
States; an area of low barometer will
pass northeast on Saturday over Mis
souri and Indiana, with south winds
and rain in the Gulf States and Ohio
valley; continued easterly winds, with
snow, is probable for the lakes. Dan
gerous winds are not anticipated on the
Atlantic coast.

The Wharton Poisoning Case.
Annapolis, Md., December 22. The

Their evidence will close the States'
case, excepting the evidence of the
analysis of a part of the remains of
Ketchum, now in progress under Prof.
Toucey, of Baltimore. The court ad
journed till 1:30 P.M. Tuesday next,
the Sheriff taking charge of the jury.

Evansvillb, Demember 22. About
6 inches of snow fell during last night
and it has been raining and freezing
since four o'clock this morning. The
ice is gorged solid below the mouth of
Pigeon creek and people srossed on it
last night. River swelling a little. The
Dwight Newcomb is aground on the
bar near the Point below the city and
apprehensions are entertained for her
safety. The Quickstep and Arkansas
Belle have laid up in the Tennessee.

A correspondent of the Cincinnati
Commercial, who has just returned from
a trip through the West Virginia coal
field and over the Chesapeake and Ohio
railroad, writes to that paper, and after
discussing the price, supply and trans
portation of coal, so far as Pittsburgh
is concerned, ooocludes by stating that
Cincinnati must look for her future
supply of fuel to the Kanawha Valley.
The writer starts oat by saying that
fifteen years ago coal sold in Pittsburgh
for fire cents per bushel delivered, and
now that it it ooamaads ten osnts.

Says the writer
"The demand has doubled pricet, and
yet the supply has not responded suffi
ciently to cheok the rising rat e, and we
may ask, when the demand doubles will
prices again be multipled Can we ex
pect the next ten years will show differ
ent results from the last? Demand
(consumption) is population. Popula
tion doubles by natural laws; will dou
ble again in a given time, and continue
to double by operation of the same lav.
To keep paoe, then, with the demand,
we must double the supply and con
tinue the multiplication Can our pres
ent supply fields (Pittsburgh) meet this
'quick, increasing demand,' without
advancing prices? They cannot.
They should be stimulated by higher
prices to produce largely but if asked
to double within ten years, would cer
tainly double prices, and would fail to
meet the demand in the following ten
years at any price. They have not the
stock on hand all the section bearing
first-class coal, known as 'Youehio
gneny and No. 1 Pittsburgh has been
worked over, or is now worked large
inroads have been advanced within
thirty years from fifty to one thousand
dollars per acre; the fixed stock already
enters largely into all the calculations
of manufacturing operations, and the
word unlimited no longer applies to
this coal supply"
This being the case, he argue*, the
people of the Ohio and Mississippi Val
ley must look elsewhere for fuel, and
the Kanawha Valley will provide it for
them. There, says he, we find the best
coal in the world for all purposes, and
we may say in unlimited quantities;
coal for gas, steam, domestic use, man
ufacturing iron (without coking), splint
coal and cannel and of the latter Pro
fessor Charles M. Cresson, of Philadel
phia, writes: "It is the best I have
ever examined, excepting only the
Boghead." The aggregate thickness
of the seams above river level is forty
feet. Emigration has passed over this
country; speculation had not found it.
An acre of Kanawna land contains
oue million seven hundred and fifty
thousand (1,750,000) bushels of coal,
and is valued at less than one hundred
dollars per acre. An acre of Pittsburgh
coal contains one hundred and seventy
three thousand bushels, and is held at
one thousand dollars per acre. A cal
culation will show the present relative
value of coal in each section.
By the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad
and Ohio river, Kanawha mines can
deliver coal in this market at nine cents
per bushel. Pittsburgh claims fourteen
cents as only a fair and profitable price.

THE JEFF. DAVIS MANSION.
Back of the Capitol, on Marshall
street, stands a very large residence,
one of the finest in Virginia. It oc
cupies a commanding eminence, known
as President Hill. This house was
built many years ago by a wealthy
gentleman named Brockenbrough.
He aspired to have the most costly and
beautiful residence and surroundings in
Richmond, and to that end spared
neither money or pains. The grounds
were laid out in beautiful style, trav
ersed by graveled walks, and adorned
by statuary and fountains.
When the Capitol of the Confederacy
was removed from Montgomery to
Richmond, the City Council here pro
posed to do something handsome for
"President Davis;" so they bought the
Brockenbrough residence, with the
intention of presenting it to him.
When he arrived here from Montgom
ery, the city authorities had gone so
fhr as to pay for the property, and had
the title vested in Mr. Davis. A
formal presentation of the property was
then made to Mr. Davis, by the City
Council, when much to their surprise
and mortification, he respectfully and
firmly refused the present. He warmly
thanked the city authorities for their
kind efforts in his behalf, but he could
not, consistent with his own self-respect
and the dignity of his office, accept the
gift. The city, however, refused to
take the property back, and for a time
there was a quandary. Mr. Davis,
however, held out firmly, and at last
the matter was compromised by an
agreement upon the part of the city
to become owner of the property, and
an agreement by Davis to live in it
during his term of office. His "term"
was cut off by the operations of tbe
Federate army, and has never been
filled out. The property now belongs
to the city, and is used for school pur
poses. r
I don't wish to draw any contrast
between the conduct of Jeff. Davis and
Grant in tbe matter of accepting houses
and lots as giAs, but the reader can do
so for himself.
THE LEE BOrSB.
After gazing at the rectangular,
three storied, stnocoed pile before men
tioned, thinking of the hoflbs and fears,
disappointments, sorrows and joys that
must have successfully inhabited the
breast of the rebel President while be
inhabited the city's three story house,
I passed on to take a look at the
residence occupied by General Lee
during tbe war, and yet known as the
"Lee house." It is a plain, unpretend
ing, three story brick building, No 707
Franklin street, and is now ooeopied
by Mrs. George Davia. Whether it
was the property of Lee or not, I do
not know, but at all events he occupied
it At the beginning of the war a
number of wealthy citixens of Rich
mond made up a handsome sum of
money to buy General Lee a house
suited to his station and rank. But
he refased to aaoept the jcoffcred
present and the money was refunded to
the subscribers. Here we have two
instanons of reftmak to accept houses
and lots by two of tke meet prominent
men ia the late Confederacy. Ia the
light of our President's conduct, these
two old Confederates were great fools.

Affair.
The horrible tragedy at Lyon, m
which a man mardered his wife and a
police officer, and bad to be shot five
times before be could be captured, occu
pies considerable space in the Boston
journals. The following is an abbrevi
ated accountof the affair.
The murderer'* ni^rae was William
Vanoar. He was thirty-five J^ra old
and a native of Washington, Maine.
He bad of late years been a victim of
intemperate habits, which rendered
him an abusive, dangerous man
Among his acquaintances from youth
up was Miss Luce She was two years
older than himself and, over twelve
years ago was married to her first hus
band. He died, leaving her with three
children. In about four years after bis
death she married Vannar against the
earnest entreaties of both her own and
his relatives. Soon troubles arose be- 1
tween them, and four times she was
compelled to leave him and take refuge
in her father's family, where she would
remain until Vannars entreaties and
promises would effect a reconc.UaUon
and return. The last time she left him
he came to her father's house when none
but herself and mother were d*
manded in violent language that she
should return with him or he would
kill her. She refused to go when an
nar drew a knife and rushed at her,
giving her a stab in the breast. Mrs
Luce then seized a stick of wood and
told him to stop or she would split his
head open, when Vannar turned and
stabbed her also in the breast. He then
ran hastily from the house, but retamed
about four hours after. The two
women's wounds not proving serious, a
countrv justice simply put him under
four hundred dollars lor a simple assault
on his wife. He furnished the bonds
and then left the town, but kept his
wile secretly informed of his wherea
bouts, and alter he had been missing
nearly four months, she left the house
under pretext of going to see a neigh
bor; since then she has not been seen
by her parents. She met her husband,
and they were seen taking the cars
from Augusta. This was last June,
since when, with the exception of about
a month, they have been in Ly"n
On the day of tlie murder, annar
and his wife were in their room on the
second floor, when she picked up a soil
ed shirt of his, saying that she wou.d
take it down stairs and wash it. I his
did not suit his convenience; but she
insisted, and proceeded down Btajrs.
The disregard shown to his wishes
seemed to infuriate Vannar to such an
extent that he sprang alter her, but
from this point the story is 1DC0I"P1^;
for there is no living witness of what
transpired till the terrible struggle which
ensued culminated in murder. The first
intimation of serious trouble was a series
of frightful groans heard by the laud
lady, whe stood speechless with terror,
while murder was committed, and unti
the murderer re-entered her apartment
smeared with blood. This he cool j
washed from his hands and [ace. and
after wiping hi. weapon, with which
the deed was committed, an ugly clasp
knife, with a blade five inches in
length, he asked the affrighted woman
to give bis overcoat and gloves to his
sister, Mrs. Caswell, residing in Chest
nut street. He then deliberately went
down stairs, stepping over the body or
his victim, who lay dead in the front
entrv and undertook his escape from
the scene of blood, proceeding to Rock s
pasture, a large, rugged tract of land
between the city proper and Glenmore
village but the alarm was so quickly
given that a large number of Citiaens,
who were quickly joined by detach
ment of police, finally corralled be
fugitive upon a small hill in the
northern portion of the pasture.
Here the pursuers and pursued
made a temporary stand, but quickly
taking the offensive the murderer made
a plunge at Mr. Goodridge, and par
tially overcoming that offioer, was met
by Mr. Thurston, when the two went
down together. Then flowed a fright
ful struggle, the officer doing his best to
control the sanguinary fiend, whose
gleaming knife was playing through
the air, finding a lodgment in poor
Thurston's form five times. Everv
effort was made to take Vannar off, but
finally Marshal Barrett intervened, and
by five shots from his revolver, termi
nated the miscreant's life.

THE POSTAL TBLKORAPH.
Mr. Creswell, in hie argument for the
consolidation of the telegraph system
with the postoffice, relies chiefly upon
the experience of Great Britain, where,
if his statements are correct, the Gov
ernment has derived from its telegraphs
in the first vear of the new system, a
net revenue of more than three millions
of dollars. If that were true, it would
be no rule for us. Great Britain is a
compact little manufacturing Island,
where the lines are short and the ratio
of messages to the whole population is
very high. The British figures quoted
by Mr. Creswell represent an annual
transmission of about 13,000,000 mes
sages, exclusive of the voluminous news
dispatches to the press; while in the
United States two years ago, with a
population nearly one-third greater than
that of the United Kingdom, the whole
numberof messages was about the same.
Considering the enormous length of our
lines, and the vast area of agricultural
country in which there can not be a
very general popular use of the tele
graph, it is evident that the system
would befar more expensive in America
than it is in Europe.
But Mr. Creswell's statement of the
pecuniary result of the consolidation in
England u not correct He quotes
from the "official report of Honorable

the receipts and expenditures for the
fiscal year ending March 31, 1871, and
gives the following figures: Gross re

And expenditure of the postal telegraphs,
not for the fiscal rear, bat for the four
teen months ending March 31, 1871,
and an accompanying report to
the Chancelor of the Exchequer,
by Mr. Frank Ives Scudamore,
Secretary to the Post-office;
and both these documents tell a very
different stoir from the one with which
Mr. Creswell favors us. It appears
from Mr. Chetwynd's report that the
gross receipts of the fourteen months
were ?1,068,585, from which must be
deducted ?270,605 paid to submarine
telegraph companies in respect of col
lections on their behalf, and allowed to
postmasters and others for delivery of
messages and refunded message-money.
This is evidently the item ol "payments
out," which Mr. Creswell committed
the extraordinary blunder of aupposiug
to be the gross 'expenditure; and the
residuary ?<98,580 represents not the
net profit, but the gross revenue! Mr.
Creswell, in short, has not got at the
measure at all.
What the cost of working the lines
has been is not clear from the British
reports. The whole outlay, exclusive
of payments to the companies whose
lines were purchased, amounted to no
less than ?1,397,389, but a part of this
is fairly chargeable to capital account.
Mr. Chetwynd estimates the actual
working expenses at ?470,495, and
charges the remander, ?926,894, to cap
ital expenditure. But this is a deceptive
classification. Under capital expendi
ture he places not only the cost of ex-|
tensions, amounting, as well as we can
make out, to ?168,933, but all manner
of outlay upon the plant (such as the
very important item of mainte
nance and repair for which the
Western Union Company in America
spends a million dollars a year), 177,
094 for "engineering salaries, wages,
traveling and other expenses," which
we should certainly charge to current
expenditure, and the money spent for
"preliminary instruction" and "bonus
to learners." If we refer these and
various other items to the heads under
which they really belong, we shall find
the expense of the British Postal Tele
graph system during fourteen months I
to be ?1,218,456, and the income ?798,
580, leaving a deficiency of ?419,876.
That would be equivalent to a loss of
?1,749,091 a year, in gold, instead of
the magnificent "net produce" $3,391,
954 discovered by Mr. Creswell. What
confidence can we place in our Post
master General's reasoning, when he has
erred so egregiouslv respecting his facts? J
