The Banquet to tbe Duke,
given by the New York Yaeht Club,
took place to-night at Delmonico's.
The room in which the banquet was
given waa beantiftilly decorated with
flowers, and teetooned with* Russian
and Americau flags. All the prize
cups and possessions of the club were
on a side table. James Gordon Ben:
nett, Jr., sat beside the Duke. In re
sponse to the toast, "Hia Imperial High
ness, Grand Duke Alexis," the Prince
said he was exceedingly pleased to at
tend an entertainment given by tbe first
among the nautical clubs of the world.
He thanked them for the honor con
ferred npon him, aud sat down amid
great applause.
EVBOPE.
London, December 1. Blegg, one of
the Prince of Wales' grooms, died this
evening of typhoid fever. He was a
close atteudant of the Prince, and was
prostrated about the same time. This
increases the anxiety for the Prince's
condition, which is considerably worse
to-night. The symptoms are aggrava
ted. The physicians apprehend a
relapse.
London, December 2. Morning.
The Prince passed a feverish, restless
night, and is now unchanged. There
are no further unfavorable symptoms.
The bulletin issued by the medical
attendants of the Prince this afternoon
announces that His Royal Highness has
improved somewhat, having passed a
quiet day. Hiscondition is now more
favorable.
The reported death of Blegg, one of
the personal attendants of the Prince,
is denied.
Madrid, December 2. The rumors i
are that the English and American
governments purpose an intervention
in the Cuban difficulty.
There is strong probability that a
session of the Cortes will be convened
to devise means to establish Spanish
supremacy in Cuba. Tt is stated au
thoritivelv that the ministry favor a
more vigorous policy. It is probable,
therefore, that the Cortes will issue a
proclamation empowering Amadeus to
use monies for expenses necessary to
a complete subjection and crushing of
the insurrection.
CHICAGO.
Chicago, December 2. The new city
and county government, being officially
elected on the fire proof ticket, will be
formally inaugurated on Monday.
Mayor Medill will then assume his
official functions.
Our pork packers have thus far this
season killed 264,150 hogs against 168,
699 for last year.
C. J. Johnson, of Philadelphia, who
had been stopping at 95 West Madison
street since last Saturday, was found
dead in bed yesterday morning. Be
tween $1200 and $1500 in greenbacks,
several diamonds and a gold watch
were found with him.

Jersey City, December 2. The life
saving service on the N?w Jersey coast
saved fifteen lives during the recent
gales.
A desperate criminal named James j
Eaton has been arrested in Trenton.
He has robbed jewelry stores in Lam
bertville and Trenton, shoe stores in
Trenton and Germnntown, Pa and
committed other crimes. He recently
escaped from Flemington jail, and went
to Trenton to visit his mother, lhe
police visited the house and caught him
after chasing him to the roof.
The Order of United American Me
chanics have organized another lodge
in this city known as the John Han
cock Lodge No. 76. The order claims
ten thousand members in New Jersey,
and is rapidly becoming a political
Dower. It is supposed their opposition
to Walsh, candidate for Governor in the
recent canvass, defeated him.

Washington, December 2. Senators
and representatives are arriving by
every train, and there is no longer any
doubt now of a quorum in both
branches of Congress on Monday. The
Republioao members who have arrived
are in excellent spirits over tbe political
situation, and all Beem to entertain no
doubt as to tbe result of the Presidential
contest neit year.
It is not believed to-day that Speaker
Blaine will announce the House commit
tee for several days after Congress
assembles. Canvassing for the choice

The great breach of promise and se
duction suit of Mi9s L. K. Turner
against Senor CaledonioOrtez, a banker
of Hermosillo, Mexico, was concluded
to day, when the jury rendered a verdict
in favor of the plaintiff, awarding dam
ages to the amount of $7500. Miss
Turner claimed damages in the sum of
$200,000.
BROOKLYN.
Suit Against Bennett.
Brooklyn, December 2.? An order of
arrest has been granted at the suit of
Andrew Smith against Bennett, editor
of the Herald The plaintiff was a
juror in the late Westfield explosion
case. The jury stood nine for the plain
tiff, and three for the defendant; and
the Herald, in commenting upon the
case, hinted that tbe three jurymen
who were for the Staten Island Ferry
company must have been suborned;
hence the arrest.
INDIANAPOLIS.
Indianapolis, December 2.? An in
teresting suit for damages brought by
a colored woman against tbe J. M. I.
R. R. company for ejecting her from a
first-class car, was this morning decided
for the company.

Wales report a very decided improve
ment since yesterday. He is now con
sidered out of danger and is gradually

Warwick Castle Destroyed by Fire.
London, December 3. Warwick Cas
tle, tbe seat of Earl Warwick, on the
river Avon, Worcestershire, was almost
totally destroyed by fire this afternoon. I
Origin not discovered. Warwick Cas
tle is situated between the town of
Warwick and Avon, on a steepacclivity,
<3ne of the most perfect specimens of
ancient English feudal fortresses. The
fortress was originally founded by Eth
elofleda, daughter of Alfred, King of
Britain. The surrounding grounds are
magnificent.
Message or Thiers.
Paris, December 3. The Presiden
tial message of thiers was read at the
reassembling of the Municipal Council
today.
COLUMBUS.
Death of Gamier? Arrest of the Mar*
derer.
Columbus, O., December 3. Gamier,
who was brutally attacked, robbed and
left for dead near this city, last Tues
day, has since died. The officers this
afternoon captured the murderer, John
Barclay, six miles from London, Madi
son couuty. He is now in jail at this
place. One hundred and seventy dol
lars were found on him and can be
identified as the money taken from
Gamier, and also the hatchet with which
be killed him. as he bought it from a
firm in this city. Parties identify bim
as the man who crawled under tbe seat
while Gamier was at aerocery near the
suburbs Qf the city. While in London
he had kh whiskers cut off and his
monstaeh* and eyebrows colored black

has the appearance o i being a very
shrewd man.

Tbe Erie Mtoett.
New York, December 3. Yesterday
afternoon Judge Blatcbford rendered
his decision declaring Jay Gould's
petition for the extension of time for
the production of 60,050 shares of the
Erie stock, ordered by Commissioner
White, unsatisfactory, and ordered that
reference be proceeded with, and that
all due diligence be exercised in pre
paring the stock for delivery to the
English stockholders.
Further Contributions for Cbleafo.
A further contribution for tbe Chicago
Relief Fund of 32 packages of assorted
goods have been made by the peop'e of
Manchester, England, and forwarded to
this city per steamer.

The following is from a Washington
special to the Times, December 2
Speaker Blaine has arrived, also Dawes,
Senator Wilson and a large number of
members of the respective Houses,
ensuring a quorum on Monday.
The Secretary of the Treasury has
authorized the issue of papers to the
schooner Horton, recently seized at
Gloucester by the Collector of Customs,
a full investigation showing no reason
to deprive the owner of the necessary
sailing papers.
The Grand Dnke.
The Duke attended service in the
Greek Church, Second avenue, this
morning. Prince Gallatizin, General
Gorloff and others accompanied him.
The Duke was met at the door by the
pastor, whoheldacrossin hisrighthand
and blessed Alexis. /-The latter ad
vanced and kissed the cross and then
took a seat. Ten singers from the
Svettana assisted iD the chanting ser
vices, Prince Gallatizen joining in. The
Duke again received the benediction of
the pastor at tbe conclusion of services,
kissing the cross. Alexis left this even
ing for Philadelphia. He returns here
Tuesday and leaves on Thursday.
Fire.
At half-past five o'clock this morning
a fire occurred in the Warwick House,
on Washington street. It originated in
the third story and soon spread to the
fourth, thence to the roof, which was
almost entirely destroyed. The firemen
worked untiringly in saving the bouse
and got tbe fire under control. Dam
age $15,000; property fully insured.
In the room where the fire originated
a lady was lying in the pains of labor,
and while the flames were raging she
gave birth to a child. At latent ac
counts she was doing well. Daring the
fire J. B. Prescott, driver of a hook and
ladder truck, while taking the lady and
child out of the burning building, in
jured himself severely and is now quite
low.
BOSTON.
preparation for the Reception of
the Grand Dnke.
Boston, December 3. Tbe prepara.
tions for the reception of the Grand
Duke in this city are going rapidly for
ward. The apartments which the dis
tinguished visitor, will occupy have
been completely renovated and greatly
improved since they were occupied by
the Prince of Wales, Admiral Farragut,
and Presidents Lincoln and Grant. Tbe
cabinet makers and upholsterers have
been very busy since the announcement
of the coming of the Prince, and on bis
arrival the suite of rooms devoted to bis
use will be fitting to bis station. Choice
works of art, paintings, bronzes and
marble will decorate the walls, and
everything which can please the eye
and taste will be introduced into bis
apartmants. The dining room for the
party, which will be private, will re
ceive the contributions of 6ome of Bos
ton's best florists, and the emblem ot
tbe nationality of Russia will drape the
walls with the colors of the United
States. During the stay of the Duke
the Russian flag wll be displayed trom
tbe hotel. On Friday evening a grand
ball will be given at the Boston theatre
in his honor. The arrangements are in
the hands of a committee comprised of
one hundred of the most prominent citi
zens of Boston, and tbe affair will be
one of the most brilliant that has ever
taken place in this city. The paiquette
of the theatre will be floored over and
the stage cleared, thereby opening an
area of the same dimensions as was
afforded at the grand ball given to tbe
Prince of Wales The muuic will be
furnished by Pro'essor Gillmore's band
of one hundred pieces, with the best
musical talent of Boston and vicinity.

Death of a Xewnpaper Man The
Smallpox.
Cincinnati, December 3. Captain E.
Perrose Jones, a well known newspaper
man, died at Columbus, Ohio, to-day.
He was the founder and publisher of
the Daily Columbian, a paper popular in
this city manv years ago, but long since
suspended. He was also at one time
prominently corrected with tbe Cincin
nati Commercial.
The smallpox prevails to an alarming
extent throughout the city. A number
of medical students are down with it.
The question of closing the public
schools until tbe disease abates is beiDg
brought before the public by communi
cations through tbe daily papers.

of the late John McDeritt, billiardist,
are endeavoring to raise money to assist
his widow, who is in needy circum
stances, and propose to put up for
raffle tbe billiard balls with which be
made his famous run of 1460 against

that the trains on the Kansas' Pacific
railway are now running on time, and
the track is dear of snow to Denver.

OHIO.
Confession of m Murderer.
Sprinofield, 0., December 3. Chas
BeU, a negro confined io the peniten
tiary, made a confession to tbe Sheriff,
yesterday, that be is tbe person who
murdered Mrs. Ormsbee, in this city, on
July 14, I860. He states tbat be and
a white man hearing that Mrs. Orms
bee bad a thousand dollars in tbe bouse,
went there for the purpose of robbing
her. She making a desperate resist
ance, be (Bell) drew a pistol and shot
her through the head aud then made
bis escape. The murder caused great
excitement at that time and every effort
was made to discover tbe murderers,
but without success. Some time after
wards Bell was arrested, found guilty
of burglary and sentenced to the peni
tentiary for sixteen years. His confes
sion tallies with the circumstances con
nected with the bloody affair and there
is little doubt but that his statement is
true. He however refuses to disclose
the name of the person who was with
him when tbe murder was committed.

Cincinnati, December 3. The river
is ri?ing, with 11 feet in the channel.

parted Messenger, for Pittsburgh, and
Exchange, for St. Louis. The barge of
stitsunk Saturday has been raised, and
a large portion of the salt has been put
on tbe Covington wharf.
Memphis, December 3. Arrived?
Julia, from Vicksburg; Warner, from
Wheeling. Departed Mary Millen,
for Louisville; Julia, for St. Louis; H. S.
Turner, for Cincinnati. The river rose
2 inches. Weather cloudy and damp
with indications of rain. All boats re
ported aground below are off. The
Louisville and Minneola didn't get away
for the Ohio until noon to-day. The
Orleans discharged her bulletin here.
BROOKLYN.
Rope Walk Destroyed by Fire.
Brooklyn, December 3. The rope
walk of Lawrence <fc Sons was destroyed
by fire early yesterday morning, involv
ing a loss of about $27,500. The build
ing and stock was insured for $50,1)00.
The fire was caused by spontaneous
combustion among tbe junk. The
building was four hundred feet long
and three stories high. Upwards of
three hundred people are thrown out of
employment.
STATE ITEMS.
Diptiieria. A Portland correspond
ent of tbe Preston county Herald says:
On last Saturday Dr. J. B. Foglewas
called to attend Mr. Lower's family)
residing about five miles southeast of
this place. Arriving there about 9 o'clock
in the evening, be found Mr. Lower
and one child, a little boy, dead in one
bed and two others in a dying condition.
One little girl bad been buried on Sun.
day previous, after a short illness.
When the doctor arrived he found no
one to take care of the dead and dying
but Mrs. Lower and another lady, Mrs
S. Crane, a near neighbor. She pays
that Mrs. Lower was in the first stages
of the disease and only one of the fam
ily, seven in all, were free from it, and
this a little boy of eight years, whom be
sent away that he might not be stricken
down with the rest. On Sunday, the
27th, he again visited them and found
two more dead, making four corpses
in one house. The neighbors, fearful of
the contagion, would or could not ven
ture assistance. Mr. Lower was a man
perhaps forty years old, well respected
by all who knew him, and noted for his
truthfulness and honest dealing.
Firb at Nbwburq. The residence of
Mr. Lawrence Henry, at Newburg, was
burned on Wednesday night, with its
entire contents, tbe family barely es
caping in their night dresses. The loss
in money is upwards of $2000, Mr.
Henry losing $800 in gold and $200 in
currency, John Wilkins $400. Mrs. C.
Frazier $3<K), Mr. John Henry $400,
and Mr. Charles Morgan $360. The
gold was mostly recovered. The fire
caught from a defective chimney.
Preston County Herald.
Killed bv a Falling Tree. Mr.
Gerard Rutherford, of this county, was
killed on Thursday last, on the farm of
Mr. Samuel S. Moore, three miles from
Charlestown, whilst in the act of felling
a tree the tree failing upon him. Mr.
Rutherford is a married man, about
thirty years of age. When starting
from his home to cut down the tree bis
wife cautioned him, saying her father
bad been killed bv the falling of a tree

The Institution for the Deaf, Dumb
and Blind of West Virginia, located at
this place, is truly a great credit to the
State. The unfortunates show in all
their actions, tbat they are treated most
humanely and tenderly. Tbe Principal,
H. H. Hollister, A. M., is a gentleman
and in every way well qualified for tbe
position, and in tbe selection of Mr. H.,
the Regent*, as in all their actions, since
the establishment of the Institution,
deserve the warm commendation as
good and faithful servants. In all such
Boards, however, responsible duties are
necessarily imposed upon some of the
members, than on o-.bers, and such is
the case as regards the Regent from the
Ohio District, Rer. D. w. Fisher, of
Wheeling. A more efficient member
could not have been selected one so
inspired with a sense of tbe responsible
duties of bis position. Long may be be
continued in it to grace tbe Board with
his necessary presence. Wbat we say
of Rer. Sir. Fisher. We can also
of tbe other members of tbe Regency
all are conscientious in tbe discharge of
their duties, and, we beliefs, our friend,
Governor Jacob, coald not have made
better selections, gentlemen having the
interest of the State and Institntioii
more at heart, than those now compos
ing the Board of Directors of this Insti

Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Back
Taxes. Messrs. J. Rufua Smith and
Lewis Allen, a committee appointed to
compromise with the company for back
taxes upon the basis that Marshall
county had, having returned from Balti
more, whither they went last week in
performance of tbeirduty, the Board ol
Supervisors will meet to^lay to consider
their report.
As we understand President trarrett
proposes to settle by paying the miser
able sum of $7000, when it it notorous
that Morgan claims upwards of $80,
000, it it hardly possible that the Board
will accept the beggarly pittance of
fered. Our claim is either just or un
just. If just, $40,000 is the least lhat
we could accept under the Marshall
basis; if uniust, let the errors be cor
rected. We are in favor of an equit
able adjustment of this vexed matter,
and as we firmly believe that there are
inequalities in the assessment, suggest
that a competent committee be ap
pointed to revise the whole matter, and

Fatal Accident On Thursday even
ing last a little girl aged about four
years, daughter of Mr. Benj. Prather,
residing about three miles east of Berke
ley Springs, while its parents were out
of the house, poured some coffee into a
tincup and took it to the fire to heat it.
While thus occupied, her clothes took
fire, and before her parents could reach
her, her cries attracting them to the
spot, she was so badly burned that
death put an end to her sufferings in a
few hours. What a terrible warning.

one of her eyes accidentally knocked out
on Tuesday last New Creek Tribune.

C. O. Depot.? The depot building
for the Chesapeake and Ohio road, just
completed, is a neat and substantial
structure. We shall be greatly mis
taken if, when the road shall have been
entirely completed, the increased trade
of Charleston does not require an en
largement of the building.? Courier.
Growth of the City.? Among the
prominent improvements that have
been made in Charleston during the
season, are the new steamboat landing,
the Cotton Opera Ilouse, the Courier
h'lilding and the new hotel. These
improvements, in the aggregate costing
nearly $150,000, are within a stone,
throw of each other, and are fair
samples of the general growth of the
city. Besides these, we have two new
churches, a large number of fine busi
ness houses, and private dwellings
almost without number. And these
are but the early steps. Next year and
the next and throughout the luture,
capital and enterpri-e will go forward
with firmer tread, until a city worthy ol
the Kanawha Valley and of the State
shall take the place ofwhat but ft little
while ago was the village of Charleston.

Elk River Improvement. We learn
from Colonel P. II Galligher that Lock
No. 1, on the Elk Hiver Improvement,
has been completed, and that eteamers
will soon be running on that river for a
distance of twenty miles. This of
iteelf will bring an immense amount of
busine-s down Elk, but the improve
ment does not stop here. It will be
prosecuted rapidly and thoroughly until
all of Elk river that can bv energy and
enterprise be made navigable shall have
been prepared to receive the keels of
commerce. A large scope of trrritory,
rich in minerals, in timber and in Agri
cultural wealth will thus be rendered
accessible and a fine market afforded
its profits. Charleston, meanwnile. as
the depot of supplies and exchanges,
will profit largely by the enterprise and
its ultimate results. Courier.

five months, and entered the Convent ot
the Visitation, on G street, Washington
