Hubbard, Clerk of the Po. lice Court, has presented each member of the police force with a pair of winter gloves. The deputy sergeants all say "Bully for Hubbard." It is considered the thing for young gentlemen to have their overcoats made with a pocket on one side lined with flannel or fur, into which a lady may slip her hand when walking, if a cold winter's evening. A stranger recently got shaved in one of our barber shops, and remarking that he was a Chicago sufferer, walked away without paying. We hear that the VigiJaut fire engine waa seriously dam aged yesterday morning while en route to the fire at the boat store. It was represented to us that the engine had suffered the loss of its entire upper works. Wecould not ascertain how the accident occurred. Intelligencer of yes terday. We have the best authority for say ing that there is not a word of truth in the above. The Vigilant had a fine lamp or headlight on her, and aa this became loose, the engine was stopped and the lamp taken off. That's all Ifca upper works she "lost." Assault and Batthht.? John Mc Intyre was arrested yesterday on a war rant issued by 'Squire Johnson, charged with committing an assault and bat tery on Vincent Boggs, a week or two ago. Before the case came for a hear ing the matter was settled by Mclntyre paying the cost*!. Time is valuable only as it is im proved. Time once lost can never be regained. Remember there is some thing to be learned at the lecture to be given by Mrs. Stanton to-night and by Mrs. Wood hull on Thursday night. Improve these opportunities. Shell Oysters. The members of the different Lodges of the Knights of Pythias, of this city, design paying a fraternal visit to Steubenville, on Wednesday next. Those who intend going are to meet in their hall, Peter son's block, on Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock, and proceed from there to the cars or steamboat. Another Burglary. At an early hour yesterday inoYnig the store of John G. Ileftley, the Oyster King, under Odd Fellows' Hall, was entered by burglars, and several cans of fruit and oysters, about $12 in money and a revolver were taken. The rascals obtained entrance by climbing through over the transom of the back door, where a pane of glass had been broken out, and a thick paper substituted, and then removing the bar across the back door. They showed good taste in getting in where they had a sure thing on getting fine oysters. J. D. Ewing, of Moundsville, and Wra. I. Boreman, of Middlebourne, last Wednesday, whilst Judge Stewart stepped out of the Court Bouse at this place, and during the time Mr. Ewing was engaged in arguing a case, con cluded they would indulge in a little knock down to pass the time off. Some altercation occurred between them, when Ewing called Boreman a liar and struck him, when they clinched and went to work in earnest, at which time some of the bystanders interfered and stopped further proceedings in the mat ter. Wetzel County Independent. We shall expect, if this sort of thing continues, that the victor iu next Thursday's fight, Coburn or Mace, will be hunting amongst the members of the Moundsville bar for a foeman with whom to contend for the P. R. championship. To Keei* the Peace. Charles Dougherty was arrested yesterday and taken before Squire Johnston/on a war* rant issued at the instance of his daughters, charging him with threaten ing to take their lives. Dougherty was required to give bond to keep the peace and be of good behavior for one year, in the sura of $300. Failing to find the security he goes to jail. I NJi'RKD iiy the Cars. A friend in forms us that while a party of boys were playing with the cars, at Mounds ville, yesterday afternoon, one ol theni, whose name we have forgotten, was so badly injured that it is feared his feet will have to be taken off at the ankles. Let the citizens of Wheeling remem ber the teaching of St. Faul, "Prove all things, and hold fast that which is good," and go and hear the lecture at Washington Hall, Thursday night. Kivkr News.? The river is falling still, but slowly, the marks showing si* feet and one inch last evening. At Pittsburgh there is four feet six inches and falling. Tne Major Anderson will be here, Captain Muhleman telegraphs, to leave on Wednesday at noon, without fail. Passengers and freighters can depend on her leaving on that time. The Argosy, Captain Gardiner, will leave for Pittsburgh this morning. Passengers will find her one of the most comfortable and pleasant packets, and her officers experienced and skill ful gentlemen. The Courier, Captain Jack Harrisonl is to-day's Parkersburg packet. She leaves at half past ten o'clock. Those who have not secured their seats for the lecture to be delivered by this tal ented lady, at Washington Hall, to night, should call at Sheib's music store this morning and attend to the matter. A? we predicted, the police court docket yesterday presented a lovely array of names. The list of galoots was the longest we have had for lome time, though none of the old time professors of benzeniologyj and geology were present. Charles Dougherty is an old man whose family mansion is on John street. He seems to be a croes old sinner and one determined to have bis own way. On Saturday night his grown daughters had a little party a 1 the house, which, as they support the family and pay the rent, they thought they had a right to bavo. Not so the old man. The idea of a party in the house without his permission riled bira? though he said nothing then. On Sun day morning, though, he got a chair round, and went to flogging wife, daugh ters and all, making such a row as to attract the neighborhood. He was fined $5 and costs atd in default will labor in the city's behalf for twenty days George Scbell was captured in the Second ward market house, on Sunday night, between 9 and 10 o'clock, asleep on sne of the benches, with a brick in his hand and another in his hat. f 1 and costs or ten days. Frank Sawyer was found about ten o'clock Saturday morning, lying in Weisgerber's door, too drunk to turn over. Fined at regular retail rates, f 1 and costs or ten days. William Dunn done got drunk Saturday morning. About ten o clock an officer found him lying on the side walk, corner of John and Main, done up and sound asleep. $1 and costs was what was done to Dunn. RatclifT Craig was arrested on a war rant charging him with disorderly con duct on October 28th. The charge was not proved. Ratcliff Craig was also charged with having gone into Mrs. Shanley's saloDD, on Saturday and assaulted one of the men boarding there, and who was sit ting by the stove saying nothing. In the language of the witness, "I was sittin' by the stove when that feller came up and gimme a welt alongside o the jaw that made my head ring again." Craig was fined $10 and costs or thirty days. John McCauley, a sorry loeking man was picked up ou Saturday after, noon about three o'clock, lying on the footwalk of the suspension bridge too drunk to lay down in comfort, fl and costs or thirty days was the assessment. Charles McGann was found, spread out like a coonskin on a barn door, on Saturday night, between 10 and 11 o'clock, at the corner of Madison and Main streets. Leave orders early at the Par tridge Gallery. A Bold Operation. We heard vet terday of one of the boldest attempts at robbery we have heard for some time. On Friday night at half past nine o'clock, the store of R. Larkin, No. 194 Market street, was closed up, and Mrs. Larkin and one or two others were sitting in the rear end of the store, hav ing a social chat. The Iront door had been left unlocked, and by this means a negro man obtained entrance unob served. He at once went to work and packed up ready for carrying off a lot of dry goods worth, perhaps, twenty five dollars. The persons sitting in the rear of the^tore heard some noise, but paid little or no attention to it, and the rascal could have made off with his plunder without being detected, but success made hiin bold. Going to the rear end of the store he got a sack to put the stolen goods in. Re turning to where his plunder was con cealed, in the front of the store, he made such a noise a* to attract the attention of Mrs. Larkin and others, who discov ered the thief. Hoping to secure the fellow, they locked the door, but he pulled down the bolls and, springing the doors open, made his escape. He left behind him a new hat and a purple silk bonnet, both evidently stolen. He is described as a mulatto of small stat ure and highly pox marked. It is a great pity that there was no man in the store at the time to prevent the escape of the bold scoundrel. A Specialty.
