There were two additional deaths from cholera at the quarantine hospital, yesterday, the victims being two children of emi grants. There appears at present no reason to anprehend the spread of the disease. The majority of those now ill are in a condition favorable to recovery. Nimpenslon of Tweed's Bank. The Guardian savings bank, of which Tweed is president, has suspended, and a receiver been appointed. The bank has ample securities, and the depositors will be paid. Bowling Green Having* Bank. The swarming run begun 011 the Bowling Green savings bank was pre cipitated by the announcement late last night of the failure of the Guardian savings bank, which continued through out the day until every dollar in the bank had been paid out, rendering it ju'cetsary to claim the bank privilege of sixty days' notice from depositors. The officers claim that at the end of sixty days thev will be able to meet all demands. The National savings bank, on Broadway, is also reported in a critical condition. Daring Bank Robbery. The Union Trust Company, Xo. 73, Broadway, "was rebbed last evening just alter bank hours, in a most daring manner. A little after 3 P. M., when the clerks were busy, two respectable strangers entered and asked for Mr. Frothiugham, the President. They were directed to his room, when they were admitted by Mr. Frothingham iu person. One stated that his name was Edwards, and that he wished to borrow three or four thousand dollars. While he and the President were engaged set tling the preliminaries of the loan, his companion slipped into an adjoining room and seized 100 bonoase88ion, which are said to implicate him and William Tweed in the Erie scheme. Tim Catlin and Billy Edwards, prize fighters, both of whom were sent to prison and fined $1000 each for engag ing in a fight, will be taken into the Supreme Court, Monday, on a writ of habeas corpus, to ask their release, on the ground that their conviction was il legal, as the offense was not committed within the jurisdiction of the Court. In a letter to the committee on the Organization of Labor Reform, at Wes ton, Senator Wilson, of Massachusetts, says that he can't, with his views ol propriety, join in the movement. He is a Republican by conviction as well as issociation, and has learned bv experi ence the trials end hardships the poor are doomed to suffer. The Republican party came into being to crush the powers of owners of labor, and lift from the brows of workingtnen the dishonor of enforced toil, and he would do noth ing to endanger that work. Senator Spencer, of Alabama, and S. F. Cary, of Ohio, wrote letters sympathizing with the work. New York, November 19. Shortly before the hour of midnight, last night, the Russan frigate Svettana, with the long expected Grand Duke Alexis on board, arrived offthe the lightship in the lower bay, where she anchored for the night. The news of her arrival was not known in the city until an early hour this morning. The officers of the Svettana report that all is well on board, and express much satisfaction that tbe other vessels of the squadron had arrived safely in harbor. The Svettana sailed from Madeira on Octo ber 12 and had experienced strong head winds aud rough weather nearly the whole passage. The committee ol Reception are somewhat disorganized by the suddenness of the arrival, and il the reception takes place tomorrow morning it will not be so grand as if lees hurriedly prepared. The Prince will come up at daylight in the morning, but will not land till about 2 P. M. The regular programme for his reception, which has been already published, will then be carried out. The Commander in Chief of the National Guard has issued a notice ordering the troops pre viously selected for the occasion to be ready and form in line at 1:30 P. M. for the reception. The Prince will, it is believed, remain over night in this city and depart for Washington early Tues day morning. It is generally believed that the assets of the Guardian and Bowling Green Savings Bank, which suspended last week, will prevent any loss to the depositors. Rumors having been circulated thaj the National Savings Bank, 609 Broad way, has suspended. The Directors have published a card denying the rumors, and bating that all the depositors will be paid in full on pre senting their hook. WASHINGTON. 1'olltlcnl Adair* In the West. Washington, November 18.? Ex Senator Williams, of Oregon, arrived here last night from the Pacific coast, in which region he has been for the past five months. He gives it as his belief from the evident change in public senti ment, that the State will go Republican at the spring election, aud that the party will be enabled to continue a Republican in the United States Senate in Califor nia. Judge Williams says that the be lief is general that Cargent will be elected Senatorin placeofCole, although the latter is a candidate. The Federal soldiers favor Cole, but Cargent and his friends are confident of victory. The President has appointed Horace Harrison Attorney of the middle dis trict of Tennessee. The President refuses to see visitors to day, being busily engaged with his annual message. The Agricultural Bureau to-day issued a synopsis of its November reports, which show a very agreeable condition of crops, more so than the last reports. Washington, November 19. J. A. Alper, Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue at Charleston, South Carolina, has mysteriously disappeared. An ex amination of his accounts show them to be correct. His friends claim foul play. The Senate Finance committee will soon commence the revision of the tariff' and tnx laws. The members of this committee express the belief that taxa tion may be reduced fifty to one hun dred millions annually, without detri ment to pub'ic service. This conclusion has been reached after careful co operation with Secretary Boutwell, Commissioner Douglass and promintnt internal revenue officials, also distillers anil tobacco manufacturers. It is asserted among those intimate with Republican tactics in South Caro lina that a programme has been ar ranged to clear the skirts of the party from the odium which is attached to the financial swindle recently exposed. The first act in this programme was the caucus of colored members of the Leg islature recently held, wherein they pledged themselves to repudiation. Recent advices from the Apache In dian reservation, Camp Grant, Arizona, represent the Indians there as greatly excited by the presence of bailiffs from Tuczin, supported by soldiers, hunting through the reservation in search of Indians charged with murder, ortion of the head was gone, and the remaining part charred and blackened. McDeville was last seen in this spot so intoxicated as to be un able to take care of himself, and the upper teeth in the remains were false, as were his. Kev. Every one of the leading real estate agents have more or less commissions from such parties to buy at a reductoin of from 30 to 40 per "cent, on former values, but there is a wide difference between the viewsof owners and would be buyers in regard to values. Those who come here from abroad with money to invest naturally reel unwilling to buy unless they can see a chance to make a profitable speculation, while, on the other hand, many property owners flatter themselves with the notion that their ground is worth about as much aw it was before the buildings were destroy ed, and the business which made the ground valuable was interrupted. Mayor Davis has called a meeting of investigation for Tuesday evening, inviting all those who have lost property or have been victimized in regaining it. to be present. Two Girls BnrnN to Death Aid for Chicago. PorrsviLLB, Pa., November 19. At one o'clock this morning, at Colorado, Pennsylvania, the house and tavern of Michael Cantield was destroyed by tire. Ilia two girls, aged seven and nine re spectively, were burned to a cinder. The fire is said to be the act of an in cendiary. Oil City, November 19. This city, which was almost wholly destroyed by fire in 1S66, gave Dr. Thomas $750 to day to aid in rebuilding the Methodist Church of Chicago. WEATHER REPORT. Probabilities. Washington, 7 P. An Attempt to Ljraeh a PriHaer Tbe Would-be Lynchers Roughly Handled. Brooksyillr, November 19. A mob broke into the jail last night evidently with the intention of lynching McDon ald Cheek, who murdered his father in-law at Lawrenceburg a year ago, and who has been granted a new trial. Cheek knocked the first man down that entered his cell, and snatching a re volver from him, fought like a demon, knocking down and wounding several men, till the jailor escaped, set the fire bells ringing and alarmed the town. A large number of citizens coming to his -assistance, the mob hastily dispersed, taking the injured with them. Several of the mob were recognized and will Improbably be arrested SCRAXTOX. Trouble In the Coal Regions. Scranton, Pa., November 17. Th# Wilkesbarre miners are on a strike for non payment of wages. The payment of their money has been considerably delayed past the usual day. This is perhaps the commencement of a series of troubles designed as a retaliation for not voting for Parrish, the President of the company, who was running for the State Senate at the late election, but who was defeated. NEW JERSEY. Fatal Accident. Jersey City, November 18. A Ger man named Mortell Buffalo, residing at Union Hill, while at work to-day, acci dentally discharged the contents of a rifle in his jaw, causing death in an hour. Although deprived of speech, the dying man made his will. NEWPORT, KY. Accident. Nkwport, Ky., November 19. A carpenter named Williams fell from the main pier of the Cincinnati and New port bridge, yesterJay evening, and it is thought he cannot recover. Tim Nontli iu I8#5. At the close of the year 1SG5 General Grant made a tour of inspection in the South, to ascertain the condition of affairs, and, as he says, "to learn, aa far as pos-sible, the feelings and intentions of the citizens of those States toward the General Government." On the 18th pf December he submitted his report to th% President, in which be .said:. I a in satisfied that the mass of think ing men of the South accept the present situation ofaffairs in good faith. The questions which have heretofore divided the eentiuients of the people of the two sections slavery and States rights, or the right of a State to secede from the Union? they regard as having been settled lorever by the highest tribunal ?arms? that innn can resort to. I was pleased to learn from the leading men whom I met that they not only ac cepted the decision arrived at as final, but now that the smoke of battle has cleared away and sufficient time has been given for reflection, that this de cision has been a fortunate one for the whole country, they receiving like ben efits Irom it with those who opposed them in the field and in couucil. There is such universal acquiescence in the authority of the General Govern ment throughout the portions of the country visited by 'lie that the mere presence of a military force, without re "ard to numbers, is sufficient to main tain order. The late slave seems to be imbued with the idea that the property of his late master should by right belong to him, or at least should have no protec tion from the colored soldier. There is danger of collisions being brought on by such causes. My observations lead me to the con clusion that the citizens of the Southern States are anxious to return to self government within the Union as toon as possible; that while reconstructing they want and require protection from the Government; that they are in earnest in wishing to do what is re quired by the Government, not humili ating to them as citizens, and that if such a course was pointed out they would pursue it in good laith. It is to be regretted that there cannot be a greater commingling at this time be tween the citizens of the two sections, and particularly of those intrusted with the law-making power. If the condition of affairs described in this report has changed *ince then, who is responsible? The control of the Southern States was taken out of the hands of President Johnson and given to General Grant as Commander in-Chief; afterwards he became Presi dent, and ever since has had complete control. Onk of the repulsive features of Pre. sident Grant's more recent career is his pecuniary meanness. Ue not only takes presents and increases his large fortune in that manner, but he is very mean. Here, for instance, is his son. who has just been educated at West Point at the public cost, and who holds a commission as an officer of the armv. First, the young man had a leave of absence to go into the service of a rail road company, drawing his pay as an j officer and his salary as an engineer at j the same time. Now he is going to I Europe, but his father does not pay the bills, as other men do when their sons travel abroad. The traveling expenses of this young man are to be paid by the people of the United States. He is ordered for sham duty in Europe, and this suffices to secure full pay for him, just as though he was really in service here at home. This is not only an offensive proceeding because it is be stowing a special favor upon the Presi dent and his son at the expense of the people, but it is also exceedingly mean. In fact, it amounts to obtaining money under false pretences, and to taking what belongs to other people M T. Am. ilmn Killed at Cranberry. A man was killed at Cranberry Sam mit, Preston county, last Friday night, by being run over by the cars. lie was a stranger, but gave his name John Shrobea, of Ulster county, N. Y. The cause of this unfortunate accident ceems to have had its origin from whisky. lie had been noticed the day before at Rowlesburg in an intoxicated condition. Friday evening, at Cran berry, he went into the yard near the house of Mr. David Lovenstine, and seemed to be in a crazed condition. Mr. Lovenstine thinking him some dangerous individual asked him what he wanted, when he immediately started and ran, having previously thrown off his hat and coat. It being dark he got upon a freight train that was just pass ing, without being noticed. Just at this point the train which was in motion was uncoupled by the brakeman for the purpose ofdividing it. The supposition is that the jar caused by the uncoupling threw the man off, and falling upon the track the hindmost cars passed over his body, and before he was discovered an engine was backed down and also passed over his mangled form. Grafton Sen tinel. Death la a Coal Mlue. Mr. Ritchie L. Love, of Newburg, died November 15th, 1871, from the effects of a fall of coal in Oral Mine?. Mr. Love went to work on Tuesday morning, November 14th, about 5 A. M. and had been at work about halfau hour, and was in the act of shovelling coal, in order to fill his car, when a mass of coal weighing two or three hundred pounds fell upon him, break ing both his legs and injuring him inwardly. Dr. Vankirk was called upon and set his broken limbs, but he gradually sank, only living about nineteen hours. He was universally looked up to and respected as a father and counsellor, his life being an example to all. Kev. F. Wilson kindly came to see him and offered him consolation, which was appreciated. He was fifty-three years of age, was a Freemason for the space of thirty years, and an honor to the fra ternity. He was a good living Christian and dicJ as he lived. lloti?e (turned. The house was occupied by a family by the name of Stansberry. The husband and wife were both absent on the evening of the tire.
