mogt prominent and esteemed residents of
I this city, died at his residence Saturday

burglars concealed himself in the u])per
p u t of the building in the day-time and
admitted confederates during the night.
A Determined Suicide.? The telegraph
has made brief mention of the death by
suicide in Mew York, on Wednesday, of
Lafayette Fisk, formerly of Maine, it ap
pears that for several days previous to his
death he exhibited symptoms of aberration
of mind, and Wednesday morning appear
ed violent. His wife dre-sed herself to go
out, when Fi.-k followed but tailing to
j overtake her, he returned to his room, and
procuring a knife, stabbed himself in the
neck. Then taking a pistol he shot himself
in the breast, and then rushed to the roof
of the house, which is four stories high,
and leaped to the pavement, falling upon
his bead, crushing the skull, and causing
iustant death. The first knowledge his
wife had of the dreadful occurrence was
1 when she ictui ned home a few hours latwr.
Mr. Fink wan formerly in prosperous cir
cumstances but loft a large fortune by
shipwreck, and the attendant, exposures
S rostrated him, from the effects of which
e novcr entirely recovered.

It has been so in this country that out of
thirty-odd States but two have ever amount
ed to innch of anything. These were Virginia
and Massachusetts. Virginia produced all
the Presidents and military men of renown,
while Massachusetts had a sort of ropy
right on the only original American intel
lect. Between these two Commonwealths
the public honors ar.d emoluments were di
vided, while the rest of tho continent was
expected to walk in, in well-bred amaze
ment, and bestow the proper appreciative
plaudits at the proper intervals.

Ohio (his State) has great men in abun
dance? one at every cross-roads in fact.
Italian Colony in Wake County, N.
C. A second instalment of a colony of
Italians now being established at Anbury,
live or six miles from Kalek'h, N. C., ar
rived in the latter city a few days a'.'o.
There are now on the place, which consists
of over two hundred acres of land, four
teen Italians. and twenty more on the way.
The entire efforts, of the colony are being
directed to tho cultivation of tbe grape and
fig. Last spring operations were com
menced, and a very large number of vines,
expressly irnpoited ?or the colony, were
set out.? lialeigh (AT. C.) Sentinel.
A Cotton Lord.? Colonel B. G. Locket,
residing near Atlanta, Ga., has this year In
cotton 0,500 acres, and in corn and small
grain 8,5::0acrcs. making in all 10,000 acres.
At less than a bale to two acres, and at ?00
per hale, the cotton crop would amount to
tf,000 bales, and value to $180,000. Colonel
Locket employs 360 hands? all blacks. The
total population which ho provides for is
about one thousand persons. His cotton
crop is fair? bis corn crop is excellent. The
negroes give him very little trouble, are or
derly, and tolerably industrioui. Colonel
Locket thinks, throwing out the value of
the increase oi slaves, anrl calculating the
intereat on tho investment in slaves, that
cotton can now bo mado rather more
chcaply than formerly.
A Smoke-Consumer. I f what the Pitts
burg pipers publish concerning an inge
nious contrivance be correct, that city will
s'loiJly be relieve d from its only nuisance?
viz., that of smoke. It appears that a ge
nius Ins a small iron appara-'us which, when
attached to stoves, ranges, and oth? r ob
jects where coal and wood are used, con
sumer fiil tho smoke and pas generated, not
a particle of the vapor escaping through
the ehunney. The inventor also claim? that
as no soot is made it will be impossible for j
chimnejs to catch fire, and a reduction of]
insurance-rates will re-ult.

ers and deacons at the Dinwiddie-Street
church, and at night, in the Central
church, assisted by Bi>hop Doggett, he
ordained nine deacons to the oilice of
.elder in Cod's Church. Cn Saturday
niyht the missionary anniversary was held
in the Court-Street Baptist church. About
$.300 were realised as the collection.
The Conference met this morning pur
suant to adjournment? Bishop Paine in
the chair. Alter prayer bv John W. How
ard, the minute* were read and approved.
Leaves of absence were granted to "W. "VV
Duncan, T. T. Peters, W. H. Turner, E.
B. Browne, A. B. Strutton, T. il. Bass,
and T. W. Garrett.
J)r. Z. L. Spcncer was granted a super
numerary relation.
Alexander G. Brown read a letter from
James Carson, the oldest member of the
Conference, expressive of his disappoint
ment at not being abic to attend the session
and of his warm atfection for the members.
Bishop Paine stated that he was con
verted under the mini-try of Thomas Logan
Douglass, and that he was born and reared
to young manhood in the bounds of what
was then the Virginia Conference.
Alexander G. Brown moved that the Con
ference express its deepafiection lorBrot her
Carson and assure him of its prayers for
his welfare which was adopted.
Bishop Paine submitted a letter from J.
A. Itiddick, of Sussex county, asking a
supei numeral*}* rt lation which had already
been t ranted.

On motion of Dr. Edward*, E. M. Peter
son submitted the report on Sunday school?.
It declares that religious training of cliil
dreo is next in importance to the mini-try
of the Word. During the year hundreds of
scholars have been converted. "At no pe
i iod has greater interest been manifested
in Sunday schools." There are now about
30,000 scholars In bounds of Conference.
'J lie report asks no reappointment of an
agent, but urges increased effort* in the
came and the importance of teachers' meet
ings of the adopt ion of or e-lesson system.
It favors the denominational instead of
union schools, endorses Sunday -school pub
lications of the Nashville hou.-e, a ks that
conversions in the schools be annually re
ported, and requests the Executive Com
mittee to report io the next Conference a
:?1 m for the support of a general agent.

scinded, and that only two laymen be here
after allowed from each pi?toral charge. It
was adopted, after the inevitable discus
sion.

morning the storehouse of Messrs. Ea.-ley
it Jiurt, at this place, was consumed by
lire, together with most of their large stock
of merchandise. Their loss is estimated at
twenty to twenty-live thousand dollars.
The goods are said to have been insured,
but tor what amount your reporter has not
been able to learn. The house occupied
by the agent of the Richmond and Danville
railroad, by very extraordinary efforts, was

over a man named Edmond Lon:raker (eo
lored) two miles west of Abingdon. J le
was attempting to drive two mules off the
track. The engine struck him, and lie was
knocked about fifteen feet and badly
bruised. lie died about 1 o'clock this eve
ning from the effects of the injury.

Collector Murphy at New York. Great!
interest exists in political circles as to the
re-ults of the new movement, in the ap
pointment of Murphy's successor no con
cession is made to the Fenton wing of the
Radical party in New York; and as the
President's letter of acceptance breathes
most thorough sympathy with Murphy, it
is not believed there will be much oil
poured upon the troubled waters by the

in New York and New England. Rising
barometer and clear weather trom Virginia
to Lake LIuron and westward. Bri.-k but

UTEST FOREIGN NEWS.
M Annro, November 20.? A movement of
the Radical members of the Cortes resulted
in tho defeat of the Ministry upon a test
vote, the question being upon the perma
nent session nf the Cortes, which was op
posed by the Ministry.
The debates in the Cortes during the
past week, their unexpected result, and
the resignation of the newlv-formed Minis
try, cause great agitation in the city and in
toe provinces.
The Republican deputies to tho Cortes
have issued a circular to their supporters
throughout the country advising them to
keep quiet and advocating the maintenance
of public order. In the mean time the la
bor troubles continue. The bakers and dv
ers in Valencia obstinately maintain the
strike and make such threatening demon
strations that reinforcements have been
sent to the garrison there.
A steam transport will sail from Cadiz
on the .loth instant with fresh troops aud
supplies for Cuba.
Lonoon, November 20.? The Count De
Chain bord ^contradicts the report that be
intends to surrender his rights to. the
throne of France.
The Standard's report of the suspension
of negotiations between England and
France for a raoditication of the 'commer
cial treaty is fully confirmed.
John Grebble, secretary of the Total Ab
stinence Society of Brixbam, publicly ac
cuses the Queen of intoxication. Tho
charge causes great uproar, and the local
authorities have already commenced leiral

There was a large Radical meeting at
Bristol last evening. Sir Charles W.Dick
addressed the assemblage. There was great
disorder, and the hand was not allowed to
play "God Save the Queen."
Paris, November 20.? It is expected
that before the end of next January France
will have ten army corps completely or
ganized and fully equipped with improved
arms, posted at the great military centres
of the country.
Berlin, November 20 The Reichstag
has sanctioned the b:ll making military
service compulsory on all, to Bavaria.
The origin of the recent conflagration in
Geneva is to be made the subject of a strict
investigation. Suspicion is directed against
an agent of the International Society.

New Yoke, November 20.? The Russian
fiigate Svetland, which bears the Grand
Duke Alexis, sustained no damage in the
terrible storm, through which she passed
safely, without even "shipping a sea."
Jibe frigate met the storm on the 10th in
stant oil' Hattcras, and it lasted until Fri
dav niglit, when observations showed that
Jic was forty miles otf Cape May. A pilot
was taken at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon
off Barnegat.
Alexis is dressed in the simple uniform
of a lieutenant. lie is tall and strongly
built, and has the air of a gentleman, lie
has a clear complexion, light hair and
whiskers, aud blue eyes, lie speaks Eng
lish quite fluently, but appears to prefer
speaking French.
The reception has been postponed on
account of the weather, but the reception
committee, accompanied by members of
the pros, started down the bay this morn
ing on tin; steamer Mary Powell to greet
i ho distinguished visitor.
Notwithstanding the heavy rain, hun
dreds of elegantly-dressed ladies accom
panied the committee and many hundreds
of persons were standing on the pier
awaiting the arrival or tho party.
The commi'tee have decided that there
shall be no parade to-day, in consequence
of the storm. They will board the Svet
land and a-k the Grand Duke whether he
prefers to proceed at once to Washington
or rem tin herb and have a public reception
to-morrow.

citizen*, the news ot the postponement of
the procession not having yet been pub
