The losses of Cyrus IT. McCormlck
amount to $750,000. He will rebuild the
reaper factory and warehouses at once.
Judge W. TV. Farwell sent a communiea-
tion to the Board of Trade to-duy in which 1
he proposes to erect a building on the
southwest corner of Market and Washing-,
ton streets, with a room in it ninety-feet
square, which he gives to the board rent
free. The oiler was accepted. The build
ing is to be completed in forty days.
Mrs. Leroy, of 137 Dekoven street, In

through Lancaster, Pa.. on Monday morn
ing, en route to the United States Mint in

lions, which has been sent by generous

A Brar City.? The rush of strangers and
business speculators is great: all the Chi

by refugees from the other side. Hotel
men are coming in to take a turn in tho

place will be one vast caravansary. Street

larly through the burned streets, and com
munication is quickly restoring itself
throughout all the divisions.
Bricks Better than Stone.? It is aseer-
tained that no stone ever used in the busi- j
j ness part of the city is worth a farthing in j

comes out whole and is ready to try it

Court Stumped by a Question Raised by

A number of liquor cases came before the
Supreme Court, now sitting in this city.
This alternoon Hamilton L. Kami's case
was under consideration, and a witness de
clined to testify, saying he was not- bound
to criminate himself on the stand. He was j
supported by counsel, who argued that be i
was not compelled to answer, as bis testi
mony might show that by offering compen
sation for liquor he had induced the com- J
mission of crime, and thus become an ac
complice, and as such was as liable to

Monroe Ward Aroused.? The Conser
j vative mass meeting in this ward last night
was well attended, and there were present
good speakers to discuss the issues of the

by Colonel Connollv and Colonel Wynne,
of the senatorial ticket Hon. II. T.Daniel

first time in Richmond during the present
campaign, and made a first-rate impression.
Mr. Brown's remarks were not only earnest
and well timed but eloquent, while the
other gentlemen acquitted themselves with
their accustoincd effectiveness.
Mysterious Disappearance of a Lady.
Miss Susan W. Salisbury took passage on
last Saturday on the steamer Clyde at Nor
folk for New York. She staid "on the boat
while it was at the wharf in New York, and
then bought a return ticket. On Wednes
day night she was missing, and it is feared
that she committed suicide. At that time
the steamer was between Hog Island and
i Norfolk. Her trunk being searched, was
found to contain, among other things, a
board bill of the Mapes House, ltipon,
Wis., dated March 1"), 1871, and a receipt
of Samuel Walters, 111 Twelfth street,
Washington, I>. C., bearing date Septem
ber 19, 1871. On the trunk was a label
1 bearing the inscription:

I Perfecting the Plan for the Masonic

tion of the Masonic temples in the north

Masonic fraternity, with a view to the per

temple in Richmond. It Is hoped that the
corner-stone of this temple will be laid

Fatal Accident.? Philip Henrv, In the
employment of the Richmond Granite Com
pany, fell off of a canal boat near Ruther
foord's mills, about a mile above the city,
on Thursdav, and was drowned.
I Railroap Material for New York.?
The schooner J. H. Lock wood cleared from
this port yesterday with a cargo of railroad
material for the Hudson River railroad,
New York. This rolling stock wa9 manu
factured by the Tredegar Works, of this
city. This speaks well for our manufac
turing interests.
Novel Capture.? As the steamer Pali
sade was coming up the river vesterday on
her regul.r trip, when off Sandy Point she
sighted" a fioe buck in the middle of the
river, who "with lusty sinews was stem
ming the ragiug torrent," and bound for
the classic shades of the Chickahominy.
Captain Nelson immediately steamed with
in hailing distance, but the autlered mo*
narch ot the forest" refusing to "heave
to," boarders were called away," and a
boat in change of Purser Wills was lowered
and started in pursuit. After an exciting
chase he was captured in true naval style,
Purser Wills boarding him on the quar
ter" and one of the crew on the starboard
bow. A short but desperate struggle took
place, when the enemy struckTiis flag and
was towed alongside the steamer, where
his case was adjudicated and lie declared a
I legal prixe.

letter addressed to Captain William Eng
lish, of Richmond, by his nephew In Chi
cago, Rives some idea of the individual
losses In that ill-fated city, and not only
justifies what has been spent for her relief,
but shows that much more will be needed
before Charity's work is done:
Chicago, October 14, 1871.
My Dear Uncle,? I have only time to
hastily send you word that I have escapcd
with life. Father's store (wholesale milli
nery) was burned down, as likewise mv law
office, with all its contents. T saved no't one
scrap. If the insurance companies of the
East stand, father will get back one-half to
two-thirds his loss. My loss was $2,200 (all
I had), and recovery of part depends on j
the solvency of the banks and insurance
companies. About all I have left is youth,
undespairing energy, and capital in my
head and if I can find law business to do,
I cannot complain? of course, though, law
business Is and will be nearly destroyed.
"Of your charity do you and your citi
zen neighbors send relief to the 40,000
destitute who in a week will have nothing
to eat. Organize through vour churches
and every way to help decrease the num
ber of those "who inevitably will die of
starvation.
Three hundred Catholic orphans are
now housed in the Jesuit college near me.
44 Let your Catholic churches and sodali
ties make systematic efforts, and send what
they can to the Catholic Bishop of Chicago.
Tongue cannot tell the desolation and
suffering".

The Trouble at the Marshall Mills.
Under the iinpressiou that at the meeting
of the Bo:?rd of Directors of the Marshall
Mills to be bfld to-day there will be a
thorough investigation into the causes of
the suspension in the weaving-room, and
full justice done to all parties we have re
frained from making any comments there
on. From what is known of the gentle
men composing the directory, it is be
lieved that work will shortly be resumed
on terms satisfactory to all parties.
