With such forces as could be obtained,
however, the work of building was carried
on yesterday and to-day, and the result Is
alraost Incredible. Along the lake fronting i
Michigan avenue there are more than 1O0
immense franio ono-story warehouse in
progress, and some of them actually roofed j
in, aud ready for occupation to-morrow or
next day. The first steps have been taken j
to set the Judicial wheels In motion, several
of the school-houses being appropriated for j

The unexpected aid from a majority of i
the insurauce companies is, however, the
theme of greatest comment and hearty sa- j
tisfaction.
The local insurance companies ar& en
tirely and irrecoverably crushed, "but will
probably return a small share to I he in
suied.
RESUMPTION OP TRADE.
The daily papers, almost as well appear
ing as before the catastrophe, aro now pub
lished regularly, and receive a splendid bu
siness. The regular stock aud Uuauoial re
ports make a good snowing, and it is seen
that the regular routine of trade is steadily
reUsserting Itself. Cattle are still 6hlpped
largely, and this great branch of Chicago's
ancient wealth promises to suffer no dimu
nition by the temporary interruption.
Capital in every conccivable form is pre
paring to pour iu. A. great list of new
banks Is announced with Canadian and
English capital. The great Bank of Mon
treal is to establish a branch here with a
fabulous capital. A western capitalist Is
also about to start a private bank with
$500,000. j
Sales of real estate are substantially the
Same as before tbe fire, and that indicates
pretty well tbe disposition of the business

A SHARP FELLOW.
One man, while his foundery was disap
pearing iu smoke and ashfs, bethought
himself of a tumble?down rdihre on Canal
street, straightway secured it at a rental of
$1,200, and now rents It In rooms and
othces at ?12,000, and has still a room in it
fur himself.
NEARLY ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND HOMELESS
PERSONS.
As close an estimate as cm be reached
puts the houseless at 99,310. This is not
guess-work, however, as the official lists
show the number of houses and the num
ber of people In the burned division. Of
course ail these are not on the charity of
the town. Many retain slight sums from
i the banks, and have other resources but
the ereat majority must be cared for in
some way during tbe long winter that
hovers over this northern country.
THAT HOUSE.
t I turned from them all this morning to
hunt tor the spot where the tire started. It
is the greatest and most brilliant appari
tion of the nineteenth century. Here the
fire began. The squalid little hovel alone
remained intact in ull that va?t expanse.
A warped aud weather-beaten shanty of
j two rooms, perched on thin piles, with* tin
j plates nailed half-way down them like dirty
pantalets. There was no shabbier hut iu
i Chicago nor in Tippprary. But it stood
there safe, while a city hud perished be
i fore it and around it. it was preserved bv

existence.

the lamp? freighted with heavier disaster

tence he turned to his friends and said, I
can prove it by them"; to which they

Chicago was coming down upon him for
prompt and integral pavmcnt of that $200,
000,000 his cow had kicked over. Ills
neighbors say this story [that he knew very
little about the origin "ot the tire] is an in
vention dating from the second day or the
lire. There was something unutterably
grotesque in this ultimate atom feeling a
sense of responsibility for a catastrophe so
stupendous.

states that he has the means of knowing
that five hundred children wete born on
the prairie 8nd on the streets of Chicago
during Monday and Tuesday nights of the

have taken out marriage licenses In Chicago
since the' fire. The irrepressible enterprise
of the West becomes more and more ap
parent.
A man in Washington calling himself A.
G. Clarke has victimized General O. O.
Howard in the sum of $100 by representing
himself to be a Chicago sufferer.
The Chicago lake tunnel, bv which the
city is supplied with water," the tunnel
under the main liver and uno'er the South
Branch, are all uninjured. These works
alone are counted' as constituting from
twenty to forty per cent, of rebuilding the
city.
All the newspapers are still speaking of
the fire- fiend" in connection with the1
Chicago conflagation. ''Fire fiend" is a
first-rate word to have about a newspaper
office in times like these, but suppose we
lav It away now and let it rest awhile.?
Louisville Courier.
As illustrating the intensity of the heat
in which the largest and strongest struc
tures melted like wax, Mr. ILnson men
tions that where large stone bl cks like the
Honore, the Pacific Hotel, or the Sherman
House stood, nothing Is to be seen but lit
tle piles of asbey. The very stones them
selves wore burned to powder and the dust

The Providence Journal very seasonably
asks why some of the genius that builds
magnificent cities like Chicago should not
be exercised for perservatlon a* well as for

civilization, that we oan accomplish all

The Wilmington, Columbia and August*
railroad has been completed from Sumter
to Columbia, thus giving- a through and
dlreet communication by rail between Wil

Comfort for Depositors in the Frekd
men'3 Bank.? There appeared in all the
city papers yesterday morning a telegram
troin the Associated Press to the effect that
General Bullock, paymaster of the Freed
men's Bureau, had beeu suspended, and
that there was a run on the Frcedmen's
Savings Bank. Afterwards the braoch of
that bank in this city received a telegram
from J.'W. Alvord, president, as follows:
The rumors published in tho papers of
your city or elsewhere about General Bal- j
lock and a run on the Freed men's Bank
are totally groundless."
Wo are further informed that tbero is no
connection whatever between the Bureau
and the bunk.
Drowned Man.? Au Inquest will be held
by Justice Atlee, of Henrico, this morning
upou tbe body of a drowned man lying
near the tire-brick works at Powhatan.
On the corpse was found a bill for the pur
chase of iroods from Kellogg Gibson by
Charles Weiss, dated September 28th, 1871.
The amount of the bill is $15.13.
Chamber of Commerce. The annual
meeting of the Chamber of Commerce will
be held this evening at 5 o'clock. The
President's annual report will be presented
und the officers for the ensuing term will
ba elccted. Many subjects of great import
ance to the trade and commerce ol the
city have been dealt with by the Board of
Directors during the year, and much good
has been effected. All that has been done
will be fully set forth in the President's re
port. Jt is desired that there should be a
full attendance.
Reorganization of the Board of Un
derwriters.? This was effected yesterday
at a meeting at the office of the Virginia
Fire and Marine Insurance Company, com
posed of tbe officers and agents of fire In
j surance companies doing business in Rich
mond. The following officers were elected:
Thomas M. Alfriend, president W. L.
Cowardin, vice-president; Wm. H.Chris
tian, secretary and treasurer. A committee
was appointed to prepare a tariff of rates
and report the same at the next meeting of
the Board.
C-entbal High School*? Although all
the lower grade schools in the Central
School (Davis mansion; are over-crowded,
a few more scholars can be received in the
high school department, in which are the
Latin, algebra, geometry, and philosophy
classes.
Committed for Trial.? John H. Charles,
sheriff of Lancaster county by military ap
pointment, who was arrested here a few
days ago on a bench warrant for embezzle
ment of county funds, was carried to Lan
caster and committed to jail. Judge Strong
agreed to allow bail, but the accused was
unable to give the required amount.
Needs Attention.? The bridge ou the
road which pawes by ilr. Nat. Bowe'a resi
dence, on (he extension of Leigh street, ia
out of repair and dangerous. The county
authorities should give It attention.

Lecture on Lee. Rev. J. C. Long will
deliver his lecture on Robert E. Lee at the
First Baptist church to-night. The pro
ceeds will be placed in the treasurv of the i
Young Men's Missionary Society of that
The lecturer on this occasion Is a brother
of General Long, of the artillery, who was
General Lee's military secretary until after j
the battle of Gettysburg, and who was for
nearly three years on bis staff. Mr. Long
has had also other special facilities for un
derstanding General Lee's movement?.
The lecture was prepared at the request of j
the citizens of 'Charlottesville.

Aid Society of the Grace-Street Baptist
church announce a supper at the lecture
room of that church to-night. The table
will be supplied with all the delicacies of
the season, and every desirable arrange
ment will be made for the convenience of
patrons.
The Theatre.? The performance of
"School" at the Theatre last night is de
serving of prai?e, and we hope ttiat when
repeated to-nfgbt it will be before a much
larger audience. Miss Eldridge is well
titled for the part of Naomi, and played it
admirably. For the first time we can com
mend Mr. Noyes's acting without qualilica
tlon. He has an excellent conception of
the role of Jack, and acte'd it to perfection.
Mr. Eberle was, as usual, first-rate. Mr.
Davenport falling for the part of Beau
Farintosh, his place was well supplied at
short notice by Mrs. Eberle, while Mrs.
Eldridge came on as the old woman. As a
whole It was a pleasing entertainment.

I Special Meeting op the Tbustees.? A
special meeting of the town trustees was
held on Tuesday night for the purpose of
considering the State of tho water-power.
The Committee on Water-Power, under
the direction of the town engineer, was di
rected to make a thorough examination of
the canal from head-gates to waste way and
report its condition, and arrangements will
j be at once made to put it in thorough re
pair. It Is the intention of the Board not
only to u fiord every facility to the present
lessees, but to encourage a*s far as possible
other parties to lease mill-sites, and after
tho present projected repairs ure finished
nothing but causes entirely beyond the con
trol of the trustees will" prevent all the
mills from keeping regularly at work.
Almost an Accident.? Canal street In
front of tbe Graham mills was the scene of
au accident late Tuesday evening that but
for some providential "interference might
have been serious. A horse and cart, the
property of tbe Manchester bucket mill,
were on the way to the mill, and the horse,
becoming frightened at pome cotton in front
of the before-mentioned works, made a
sudden stait, and landed cart and all in the
canal, from which, after sommoniug all the
available labor in tbe neighborhood, thev
were with great difficulty removed, both
horse and cart, in an uninjured condition.
The driver made a narrow escape, but by a
leaf) worthy of the most accomplished
acrobat succeeded in escaping* a plunge
bath under disagreeable circumstanccs. He
will doubtless be more careful in future in
his drives along this locality.
Pebsonal.? The many friends of the old
war horse, Peter K. Morgan, will be
pleased to learn that he is fast improving
in health, and expects to visit Manchester
before the election. We trust that the old
veteran will live many years yet to battle
for the good cause.
At last accounts Mr. William G. Taylor
and family were at Montreal, Canadn. in
fine health and spirits. Mr. Taylor will be
absent for some weeks yet in the mean
time persons having business with the
town are referred to R. H. Beazley, town
clerk and auditor.
Messrs. Charles S. Maurice and A. C. and
C. A. Jones left last night for New York on
a business and pleasure tour combined.
While absent they will purchase caps,
belts j and other uniform for the Manches
ter Alerts.
The Rev. Mr. Christian has been quite
unwell for several daya, but bis host of ad
mirers will learn with pleasure that he Is
up and laboring hard in the cause of the
