WORK-OUT LANDS.
"Where lands ure worn out, the cause
thereof has been the continued growing ot
Indian corn, oats, &e., without
re.-t. Incredible as it may seem, the land
doc* not wear out in less than thirty years,
:n,d, aecoiding to reliable testimony, a
longer period of produetlveness eoulll V>e
assigned. Bv manuring with 100 to -00
pounds of guano or superphosphate of lime,
lit a cost of three to six dol ars per acre,
I ho worn-out lands can be fully restored. It
i- however, the usual plan to abandon the
worn-out lands to the natural growth ol
timber, which, in fifteen to twenty years,
brings the land round again. How the
second growth of pines, cedars, and other
in e* <pi ings up is undecided. Some have
supposed that the birds drop seeds, and
Others that the trees come Iroin indigenous
germs in the soil. It is beyond doubt that
bv the second growth ot timber the land
recovers itself, and it possesses the advan
tage of being mote easily cleared than on
ginal forest. In two or three years alfei
the second-growth timber is cut down tlie
stumps ure no obstruction to the plough.
CONTRAST BETWEEN THIS SYSTEM AND TnE
IRISH SYSTEM.
li will be noticed that upon the plan of
continued cultivation (by allowing the land
to rest everv t bird ear), t here is a loss equal
to one-third of the whole product ot the
l.iud in cultivation. On the Irish system of
faiming the third year, on the contrary,
would be used to grow grass and clover,
which would yield as profitable a .crop as
the best crops of wheat, &c., besides nn
proving the land.
SOU. ANT> MANURE.
It is an extraordinary fact that manuring
is scarcely ever practie.ed in this State, it
the humers manured their lands as is uoue
in Ku gland and Ireland the productive
ness ot the soil would exceed anything in
the Old Country. On the other hand, Lug
lisb and Irish farms, mantigcd on the care
less methods in vogue here, would become
absolutely worthless. Where manuie is
used the result is highly satisfactory.
CAHTAL REQUIRED.
recently attended the inaugural dinner
of the National Virginia Settlement Asso
elatlon, and in reply to questions 1 put to
the meeting a committee consisting of sev
eral ol the largest aud most respectable
planters was appointed to consider the
Mime. This committee has published an
interesting aud valuable report, in which
it is shown that a capital of three dollars
per acre on the entire firm is sufficient in
Y irginia. Accustomed as English and Irish
farmers are to working with a cupital of
lifty to sixty dollars (say ?10) per acre, the
sum of three dollars (say lis. Gd.) will ap
pear to be a very small capital, but 1 have
every reason to believe it is amply sufficient.
CONCLUSION.
1. 1 would advise emigrants to give up
tobaeco-phnting, as 1 am satisfied that
lai ming oil the lush system would be more
profitable.
?j. In my opinion the climate and soli ol
the country are admirably adapted to stock
raising, which, properly carried ou, would
pay well.
o. Intending emigrants will find it advan
tageous to place their affairs in the hands
of the National Virginia Settlement Asso

an air of astonishment, and replied with
tbe greatest coolness: Did not your Ma
jesty command rav presence at 7 o'clock
precisely!'" "Just so!" exclaimed the
Czar, at the height of exasperation. Well,
then," said Pirnetti, let your Majesty
deign to look at your watch, and you will
noreeive that I am cxact, and that it is just
7 o'clock."
The Czar, pulling out bis watch violently,
in order to confound what he considered a
piece of downright insolence, was com
pletely amazed. Tbe watch marked 7
o'clock In turn all the courtiers drew out
their watches, which were found, as usual,
exactly regulated bv that of the sovereigu.
Seven "o'clock indicated with a common ac
cord by all tbe watches and clocks of the
palace.* The art of the magician was at
once manifest in this strange retrogression
in the march of time. To anger succeeded
astonishment and admiration. Perceiving
that the Czar smiled, Pimetti thus ad
dressed him
tf Your Majesty will pardon mi. It was
by the performance of this trick that I was
desirous ol making my first appearance be
fore you. But I know how precious truth
is at court it is at least necessary that your
watch should tell it to you, sire. If you
consult it now, you will find that it marks
the real time." The Czar again drew forth

the clocks of the palace. This exploit was
followed by others equally amusing and
surprising. At the close of the perform
ances the Czar, alter having complimented
Pirnetti, brought back to his remem
brance that in the course of the eve
nings amusements he bad declared that
such was tbe power of his art that he
could penetrate everywhere. Yes, sire,
everywhere," replied the conjurer, with
modest assurance. "What!" exclaimed
tbe Czar, "could you penetrate even into
this palace were I to order sill tbe doors to
be closed and guarded?" ''Into this
palace, sire, or even into the apartment ot
your Majesty, quite as easily as I should
enter my own house," said Pirnetti.
Well, then," said the Czar, at midday
to-morrow 1 shall have ready in my closet
tbe price of this evening's amusements?
1,000 rubles. Come and get them; but 1
forewarn you that tbe doors shall be closed
and carefully guarded." 44 To-morrow at
midday I shall have tbe honor of presenting
my>elf before your Majesty,' replied Pir
ut'tti, who bowed and withdrew.
The gentlemen of t lie household followed
the conjurer to make sure that he quitted
the palace. They accompanied him to his
lodging-, and a number of police sur- j
rounded t be dwelling Irom the moment lie
entered It. The palace was instantly j
elored. with positive orders not to sutler, I
under any pretext whatever, any one to I
enter, were be prince or valet, until the
Czar himself should command the doors to
be opened. These orders were strictly
enforced, confidential persons having
watched their executiou. The exterior
openings to the palace were guarded
by the soldiery. All the approaches j
to the imperial apartments were pro
tected by high dignitaries whom a sim-
pie prolesHor ot the art ol legerdemain pos
sessed no meaus ol" bribing. In short, for
greater security, all tbe kejs had been car
ried into the imperial cabinet. A low mo
ments previous to the hour atlixed for
I'irnetti's interview with the Czar the
chamberlain ou service brought to his Ma
jesty a dispatch which a messenger had
handed him through an opening in t lie
door. It was a report from the minister of
police that Pirnetti had not left home.
Aha I He has found out the undertakimr
is impracticable, and he has abandoned it,"
observed the Czar, with a smile.
Twelve o'clock sounded. While tbe last
stroke yet reverberated the door which
communicated from the bed-room of the
Czar to the cabinet opened, and Pirnetti
appeared. The Czar drew back a couple of
paces, his brow darkened, and, after a mo
mentary silence, be said Are you aware
that you may become a very dangerous in
dividual*'" "Yes, sire," he replied; "but
1 am only an humble conjurer, with no am
bition save that of amusing your Majesty."
Here," .said the Czar, are the thousand
rubles for last night, and a thousand for
this day's visit."
Pirnetti, in offering his thanks, was in
terrupted by the Czar, who, with a
thoughtful air, inquired of him, Do you
count on yet remaining some time in* St.
Petersburglc? "Sire." he replied, "I
intend setting off this week, unless your
Majesty orders a prolongation of mv so
journ. "No!" hastily observed* the
Czar, it is not my intention to detain
you and, moreover," continued he with
a smile, I should vain I v endeavor to
keep you against your will. You know
how to leave St. J/cUr.sburgh uscusity as you
have found your wav into this palace."

far from wishing to quit this palace
stealthily or mysteriously, I am desirous of
quitting it in the most public manner pos
sible, by giving to the inhabitants of vour
capital a striking example of mv magical

crown his success in the Russian capital by
something surpassing his previous efforts
