Capt. E. Bateman has left with us a Slate
stone, taken from a quarry 30 feet below the
surface, on which is the distinct impression of a
fern leaf. He informs us that he has found many
Impressions in the rock and among the petrifac
tions several snakes, nearly the whole of some
.of which he secured.
A negro boy, name unknown, fell from the
•platform of a Passenger car, on the eastern train
on Monday last, and was run over by the fol
lowing cars, mangling both legs. When found
he was dead. He had on his person a ticket
from White Sulphur Springs to Meechum’s Riv
er and $42.25 in money. His remains were
taken charge of by Mr. C. E. Hoge, and decently
interred.

By reference to our advertising columns, it
will be seen that Mr, A. M. Bowman is engaged
is raising the celebrated Chester White Hogs, on
which he has obtained several first premiums at
our Aueuita Fairs.
Ia this connection, we may mention that Mr.
Bowman has met with great success thus far in
the sale of his fine stock, which he attributes to
liberal advertising. After the first issue of the
Vindicator containing his advertisement he re
ceived an order from Rockbridge, and every
week brought additional orders from those who
had seen the advertisement in our columns. On
Monday last, be showed us an order from
Waynetown, Indiana, from a gentleman who
had just seen the Vindicator. Sis success has in
duced him to increase his stock, and thereby en
able him to supply all orders that may be sent
him.

Vindicator, as Mr. Bowman says.

The Will of Dr. Francis McFarland was pre
sented, proved and admitted to record, and his
eon, I. N. McFarland, qualified as administra
tor.
Geo. W. Wilson was appointed Deputy Col
lector for the Pastures Township.
Anderson S. Manzy qualified us attorney to
practice law.
J. Edgar Wilson qualified as administrator of
Jno. H. Poague.
Geo. W. McCutchen, Thos. A. Bledsoe, Jas.
W. Baldwin and Wm. A. Burnett severally re
newed their bonds as Rotaries Public.
Ed. Booze and Alfred Shiflelt were each held
to bail in the sum of $100, to appear apd apswer
indictments at the next term for assault and
battery.
Commonwealth ns. Chas. C. Carson charged
with murder, on motion of the prisoner, by
counsel—Commonwealth’s Attorney consenting
—the trial was postponed till the January term
of the County Court.
Augustus Blauth was appointed and qualified
*s guardian of Jas. A. J. Frenger—penalty of
bond $700.
Wm, B. Alexander was appointed Judge of
election at Waynesboro’, vice Wm. Chapman,
dec’d, and Jonathan Coiner vice Jno. B. Smith,
who is unable to setve from ill-health.
Dr. J. C. Trevey was granted license to retail
Ardent spirits at his store-house, at Elizabeth
furnace.
Commonwealth ,vs. Jacob Hottinger, indict
ment for assault and battery—two cases. Judg
ment confessed for one cent damage and costs.
Twenty-five or thirty cases on the Issue Dock
et were disposed of.

Heavy Rain.—A very heavy rain fell in this
locality on Tuesday night last, swelling the
streams considerably. The Railroad bridge
over Goose Creek, three miles east of Staunton,
was slightly damaged, causing a short detention
of the eastern mail train on Wednesday morn
ing. ___
The farm of Wm. J. Shumate, one mile west
of Staunton, known as Montgomery Hall, and
containing 150 acres, was sold by Commission
ers Trout and Elder, at public sale, on Wednes
day last, to W. W. Donaghe, Sr., at $128 per
acre, ($19,200) equivalent to cash, E. M. Cush
ing, Auctioneer.

Contribution of the New York Tea Compa
Ny ,_On Saturday next the New York Tea Com
pany will devote the amount of their entire pro
fits at both their stores, No. 29, West Baltimore
street and corner of Gay and Forrest streets, to
the Chicago Relief Fund. This is a most gener
ous contribution, and the large amount of sales
which are daily made at these great emporiums
will doubtless be much increased on that day,
and the profits, we hope, will amount to a large
figu re.

Sudden Death.—Capt. J. D. Laley died sud
denly, at his residence in this place, on Tuesday
morning last. He got up about 5 o’clock to go
to market, when he suddenly sunk to the floor.
A physician was summoned at once, but before
his arrival he breathed his last. Capt. Laley
was a native of Jefferson Co., W. Va., and came
and settled here sjon after the war. He was an
intelligent man, an accomplished mechanic and
had many warm friends in our midst. He leaves
a wife here, a son In Pennsylvania and many
relatives in Virginia and Maryland to mourn his
loss.
Mr. Wm. M. Berkeley, of Staunton, was elect
ed by the Board of the D. D and Blind Institu
tion, on Tuesday last, a teacher in the Institu
tion, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resig
nation of Mr. L. W. Saunders, who has accepted
a similar position in the Institution at Jackson,
Mississippi, his native State.
Mr. Berkeley was educated in the Institution
in this place and has been, for a number of years,
in the Spectator office, and is a very worthy
young man. He is faithful, industrious and ca
pable, and we have no doubt will give the fullest
satisfaction in the discharge of the duties of in
structor of the Deaf and Dumb.
State Fair—Excursion Train.—To accommo
date persons desiring to attend the State Fair, a
train will leave here on Tuesday morning next,
at 10 o'clock, arriving in Richmond at 5:41 P.
M. Fare $4.50 for the round trip, with the
privilege of returning on any passenger train on
or before the following Monday. By this ar
rangement, parties will be enabled to be in at
tendance during the three most interesting days
of the Fair. Persons west of Staunton would
do well to buy their tickets to this place and
take the above train, the round-trip Ticket for
which will be sold only on the train

Milk-Trade With Richmohd.—A meeting of
a portion of those Interested in establishing this
new business was held on the 18th instant, ac
cording to previous notice, at the Augusta
County Fair.
J. B. Stuart, Esq was called to the chair and
A. Koiner requested to act as Secretary.
The object of the meeting was explained to be
for the collection ot all the Information cljich
can be obtained in relation to the establishment
of a permanent and profitable trade in the arti
cle of milk with the city of Richmond. It was
ascertained that from the quantities indicated by
parties interested that 2,000 gallons would soon
be offered for sale.
After a free comparison of views it was deci
ded to obtain definite and positive assurances
from the C. 0. R. R. Company as to the costs
of transportation and the accommodations which
can be relied on in furtherance of this enterprise.
To that en<j it was
Resolved, That a committee consisting of Sam
uel H. Bell, David Condenand A. Koiner be ap
pointed to lay this subject before the railroad
authorities and ebtain the best terms for the ac
commodation of this business
The committee were also authorized to con
vene the friends of this enterprise at snch time
and place as they shall think best, and report
their proceedings nn.4 conclusions.
A lively general interest was manifested in
this new subject on the part of many of the most
substantial men along the line of the railroad.—
The opinion was confidently expressed that if
the people of Richmond will favor the enterprise
it will open a new and profitable business
The Staunton and Richmond papers are re

The receipts of Hogs have fallen of somewhat
during the past week, and, under the Influence
of the lighter supply and a good demand for good
fat Hogs, prices have advanced X cent on the lat
ter quality, and to-day, at the close of the mar

7 cts.
