The investigations indicate the most reck less expenditure of the people's money, and its appropriation to objacta unauthor ized by law and unwarranted by public ne cessity. Warrants havo been drawn and redeemed, in violation of the express pro visions of law, and funds hare been appro priated by the Treasurer without warrant, and fbr purposes totally foreign to the uses to which they may be legally applied. Warrants have been paid out of the order and date of issue. The most exorbitant bills have been audited and allowed; the item of rent, for instance, being more than double the charge made by their prede cessors, And other incidental expenses largely in excess of all former charges. The Committee close tlieir preliminary re port by stating that they had examined a portion of the books in the Auditor's office, and called upon the treasurer, who informed them that there was no money in the Treasury, and that the balance report ed on hand teat fictitious." Upon the re assembling of the Legislature, the Com mittee will continue their investigation*. Their final exhibit will be awaited with in. terest.
