Boy lea. At Brownsville. Lat week we spcntadayatBrownsvil.e, one of the prettiest and most romantically situut cd villages on the coast. Most of our readers know that Brownsville is locat ed in the northern part of this county, at the base of the Cascade .Vountains Vhere the beautiful Calipooia river bursts throught the mountain frstnes s and "gets its start?' for a long and devious course across the prairie in the direction of the broad Willamette. The village was named in honor of its founder, Hon. Hugh L. Brown, who for several years ably represented Linn county in our Territorial and State legislatures and who is at present a much respacted resident of this city. The Calipooia courses through the middle of the town and furnishes an abundant supply of water for several iimtortant manufacturing establish ments chief among which is J. M. Mover's sash and door factory, which is the largest establishment of the kind In the State. It is a two-story build ing of mammoth capacity, furnished with the latest improvements in the way of machinery, and is carried on under the supervision of Mr. JAyer, the proprietor, who is said to be a very superior mechanic. He inspected some wagon timbers, doors, sash, etc., man ufactured there, which cannot be sur passed ei.her for skill or utility. This establishment is supplied with the very f best cf tiruberfroni the mountain mills above there, and is now furnishing its work to various parts of the State at much cheaper rates than other similar institutions. Brownsvil.'e also has a large grist mill where Mr. John Caro line turns out as good an article of flour as can be produced in the Oregon mar ket. The principal source from which Brownsville originally gained its im portance was the woolen manufactory, which, however, has not been in oper ation for two or three years. It is hop ed that arrangements may be effected for the early resumption of this impor tant enterprise, which event will again render that village of great irapertance among Oregon manufacturing towns. Brownsvsille has five stores, all of l i j. 7 Y w, He h-served that Messrs. Coshow, Morgan Co., in North Brownsville, and Jessrs. Cboley llashbuni and M. Abrams, in South Brownsville, all have exceedingly extensive establish ments, and on the day of our sojourn there all of them seemed to be well supplied with customers. We are in debted to each of the alove named gen tlemen for favors and courtesies shown us while there. We found our old Democratic friend, W. C. Baird, busily engaged at the bellows and forge, but he could find time to spin us a marvelous hunting yarn in which he recently participated and in which eighteen deer forfeited their lives to his own and his compan ions' sylvan prowess. Bro. Beard is undoubtedly; a mighty hunter before the world. 'After exchanging greetings with Senator Crawford, Hon. A. S. Bassett, Capt. Blakely and other friends, we departed for home in Halhoit's express, feeling that it is good to be permitted to grasp the hands and hob-nob in a friendly way with the Brownsvillians. Another Fike. Last Monday even ing Albany was visited by a fire, which, but for the unusually deep snow which had fallen, would have doubtless been the most destructive one known for years. The fire was discovered issuing from the picture gallery in the upper tory of Thompson Irving1 s saddlery shop, but then had gained such great headway that it was impossible to save anything in the gallery. Thad dlery and harness goods, however, weie all removed from the lower rooms and eaved from destruction. The building was entirely consumed, but, being sandwiched between two fire-proof brick buildings, no'further damage was done. The lire engine was promptly on hands, but the valves and pipes were so tightly frozen that the build ing was beyond the power of salvation when the machine got to squirting. The fire is supposed to have been caus ed by a coal of fire or sparks flying from the stove on the carpet in the gal lery, as Mr. TFinter, the photographist, had left a small fire in the stove when he went home from the gallery in the evening. Entire loss, $3,000 being $2,000 on the picture gallery apparatus and fixtures and $1,000 on the building The loss of the building is covered by an insurance of $1,000, and Mr. Win ter had an Insurance of $1,000 on his gallery. Mr. A. B. Paxtor had just purchas ed 5o00 worth of Mr. Winter's niateri al and was to have taken charge of the gallery this week. His stock was des troyed with that of Mr. Winter, and he is consequently deprived of a place of business and a stock of material, all by the cruel "ravages of the fierce fire- College Enteet aznment. We trust our citizens will not forget this entertainment to-night. It is given by the Sigma Phi Society, assisted by the Aueipuian (society Dotn or tne Alba ny College the proceeds to be an- propriated to the purchase of a carpet for the College Library. The object is a worthy one, and from our knowledge ofthe talent which' will be employed on the occasion we are satisfied that a rare entertainment will be given. Let us an turn out ana give the aspiring young histrions, orators, declaimera. debaters, essayists and musicians a rousing house. ..Admission, 50 cents per neau, ior everyooay, rrom tne big gest man to the veriest lilliputian in fant in the land. FRIDAY- Christmas. This event will be ush- J ered in on next Monday by the blow ing of tin trumpets, firing of fire crack ers and rocking of china dolls among thejuyenli fratrrnlty, and with per haps a corresponding amount of fuss and boisterousness among the adult bipeds. Christmas is of remote origin, having "got its start" away back at Bet hie mem of Judea about the begin ing of the year A. D. 1, since which time it has managed to put iu an ap pearance on or about the 23th of De cember of each recurring year. It was brought to America In 1492 by Christo pher Columbus, and therefore may be ranked aa one ofthe "oldest inhabit ants." It travels in company with a hoary headed old fellow of jolly phiz and sprightly mien, properly known as Santa Claus, Kris Kringlo or Old Sooty, whose headquarters have been from time Immemorial in the same es tablishment with McCormlck'a Alma nac and the Chinook Dictionary. It was at one time thought that Santa Claus was a base fraud and was only a mother or father in disguise, but this fallacious proposition has long since been exploded by the absolute and Incontrovertible testimony of more than a million truthful boys and girls of the period, who have seen him In their dreams as well as in his tangible self in their waking hours. Christmas Is generally regarded as a "big thing on ice," but in this country that dis tinguished appellation Is hardly "just the cheese" because of the scarcity of that article which the "big thing" must ba on. As Christmas will be hard upon us In a day or two, and as editors are expected to say some thing nice to their readers about that time, we will now let fly for that In teresting epoch the highly original and eminently appropriate wish to all our patrons, without distinction of race, color or previous good character "A Merry Christmas!', A ATountain Hunt. Wm. C. B., of Brownsville, writes us a long and Inter esting account of a recent hunt which himself and Josepn and James Pearle, and others of that vicinity participat ed in, but as we received it on the eve of going to press we find it impossible to do more than give a brief synopsis j of it through our columns. The hunt was made on ML Hebron (not that hill before Hebron up which Sampson car ried the mighty gates of the city ofthe Philistines) about' 20 miles south of Brownsville, In the Cascades, and last ed four days, at the expiration of which time no loss than eighteen deer were strung upon a "butcher's gallows" alnvit the camp fire. The hunters had left their wagon at the foot of the mountain, ami were forced to pack their venison upon horses down to it, and after they got the eighteen deer deposited in the wagon looking like the slaughtered 7cssians, heaps on heaps the champion Ximrods started homeward. H'hen they came to the vicinity of Brownsville they placed a pair of antlers upon the head of each of the four horses attached to the wag on and also a huge pair on a mule which they had hitched in the "fifth lead" and upon which a gallant hunter rode as a guide. Also, the bridle of each animal was ornamented with a deer-hide fly-switcher and other tro phies of the chase and in this gro tesque manner the cavalcade made their grand entry Into town in a sweeping trot, amid the barking of dogs and the astonished gaze of the startled Brownsvillians. This is the most successful hunt and the jollies: one of which we have recently receiv ed any knowledge. Married, Divorced asd Married Again. About two years ago Mr.Ruel Custar and Mrs. Lines, both of this county, were married, and as their do mestic relations failed to glide as smoothly as both desired, they figured in a divorce suit at our Circuit Court last month, and were duly separated by the forms of law "in such cases made and provided." But, after due reflec tion they found that they bad made a terrible mistake in thus severing the nuptual cord which bound their lives together, and, accordingly on Thursday of last week, immediately after paying off the costs of the divorce suit amounting to nearly $2,500 they pro cured the requisite license and were again made two souls with but a single," and-so-forth. We trust that the reunited pair, who now "know how It is themselves" for the second time, may never have occasion to re gret their second unioau Holiday Amusememts. As the Holiday season approaches fun comes on apace, and we will soon be in the very midst of the annual festivals in cident to that gala occasion. To-nignt the College students give an exhibi tion at the College, and the Odd Fel lows will enjoy a sociable with their families at the Odd Fellows' Hall. To morrow evening all hands will partici pate in the Christmas Tree enterprise at the Court House. On Monday night (Christmas) the lovers of the "light fantastic" will worship at the shrine of Terpsichore in Parrish's iZall. On Wednesday night following the Jiason- ic Order of this city will have their an nual installation of officers and the at tendant festival at their IZall; and doubtless many other entertainments to while away the Holiday nights will be inaugurated as the season advances. A Sharp Nig. Albany boasts the shrewdest little nigger now living. His ways that are dark and tricks that are vain have already gained him a State reputation, and it only needs Bret Harte or John Hay to immortalize him, After the fire last Tuesday morning he went into Settlemier's store and asked George for a bit's worth of candy, and after it was rolled up and given to him he slyly laid down a bridle-bit which he had gathered up from the debris of the fire, and scuded for the door, leaving the astonished but good-natured Set tlemier standing behind the counter with a countenance which betokened "sold" in every lineament. That little nigger win yet be a carpet-bag Con gressman. Music Mr. Gray, publisher, San Francisco, sends us a selection of the latest music, the "Vivian Medley" and the "College Gallop" among them. Mr. Gray is now regularly publishing the productions of our home talent as well as reprinting the most pleasing European compositions. After the harness shop had burned down last Tuesday morning a bea.utiful little girl who was standing about the smoking ruins stepped up to '3quire Powers and sadly inquired of him "how many horses had been burned to death?" He kindly informed her that no horses Were burned and then I nquir ed why she supposed that much bad been the case, when she Innocently re plied: "Because, sir, I see so many bridle-bits in the ashes!"
