Arrkstkd.—Boas Tweed, the head
thief of the New York Tammany Ring,
was arrested last Friday afternoon, on
a bench warrant, to answer to fonr in
dictments for felony. The Sheriff found
him comfortably seated In his private
parlor. The Court stipulated no ball,
and he was therefore confined as a
prisoner at the Metropolitan Hotel.
He was to liave been arraigned to
answer to tlie indictment on Saturday.
A later telegram, on Saturday evening,
says that Judge Barnard granted a
writ of habeas corpus to bring Tweed
before him immediately, on a motion
that bail should be allowed. Tweed
was sent to the Tombs by Judge Bed
ford, and brought before Judge Bar
nard on a writ of habeas corpus, and
admitted to ball In the sum of #6,000.

Sutter. The story Is going the rounds,
lor the truth of which I do not vouch,
that a member of the Legislature, flill
of pomp and dignity, and evidently
not unmindful oft he hight of bit polit
ical elevation, was recently showing a
country frieud about the Capitol, when
in the conrse of their inspection they
visited the Assembly Chamber. The
countryman was struck with the prom
inence given the portrait, and asked
the legislator what distinguished char
acter It represented. Of course it would
not do for the legislator to betray his
Ignorance, and looking at the picture
and stammer'ig a moment, he replied:
"Why, that, sir, is—let me see—why,
can't I think of his name Oh, yes
That's old Condere—old Leges Con
dere. Don't you see his name under
the picture?" "Who in thunder Is
Condere asked his friend. Why,
he is one of tho old Spanish grandees,
you know;" and with a majestic wave
of the hand, he dismissed the subject
and led his frieud away to other at
tractions.

We know of no one more deserving of
success than Alleu....Col. Chapman,
another Copelte, and a leading mer
cliant in that district, has been spend
ing a few days In Elko, replenishing
his Winter stock of goods by laying iu
large supplies of merchandise and ship

be -obtained for that purpose. The
Colonel Is a lire man, with one eye
always to business—but can't play bil
liards— Judge John H. Watson, a
distinguished lawyer and somowhnt
noted character In California In Its
early history, arrived from the north
during the week, aud, after remaining
a short time at the Cosmopolitan, left
for a few days on a risk to nn okl
friend down the valley. The Judge
met many old acquaintances here, but
an anecdote U told of hlin since his
visit to Elko that shows ooncliwively
that either his eye-sight is defective or
else bis memory lias failed him. Be
ing present at Mrs. Field's lecturo oil
last Saturday evening, the Jniljre rec
ognized, as he thought, an οία law
partner of bis entering the room in the
person of Tom. GlbTin, and seizing
him br the hand, saya, 11 Why, how do
you do, Col. Stafford I am glad to
meet you How havo you been these
long yean?" "You're mistaken In
your man," answered Tom. "My

nified air and noble bearing of the

bott assured the Judge that he was

clined, however, declaring that ho
didn't believe he ever nad a law part
ner in hts life, if he .bad, it would be
impossible to recognize him in the
murky atmosphere of Elko.
Wedding.—Wo had tho pleasure or
being present Sunday evening at the
nnpttal ceremony of our old friend
Dl:k Dorsey, who was uuited In the
"holy bands of wedlock," by his Honor
Judge Flack, to Miss Ε ω ma A- Wicks,
an estimable young lady of this city.
A goodly uumber of ladlos and gentle
men were present on tlie occasion.

Sudden Dbath.—A man by tho
name of Charles Kirk, α resident of
t'ila county since Its organization, died
suddenly at Moee Haynos' saloon on
last Saturday night. The deceased
had Indulged freely in liquor for sev
eVvral weeks past, and on the evening
of bis demise had entered the saloon
aud fallen asleep tn a chair—a sleep
from which he nover awoke In this
life. We learn that he bad been a
resident of this coast for many years,
was aj native of Indiana, and aged
about 35 years. 'Die cause of his sud
den death is said to be heart disease.
Ho was burled on Sunday.
Mostano Butolaby.—On Monday
last a refractory mustang, while being
shod at the shop of A. 0. Clark, broke
loose from lib-keeper, and at a single
bound cleared the door and made di
rectly for the private residence of Mose
MuUurney, which he succeeded in en
tering through a window—landing
S'iuarely on the family bed. For a few
momenta there was α "running to and
fro" iu that dwelling. Mose says ho
likes "horse" in bis place, but as a
Sleeping companlou ne don't think
him a success, particularly when he
has to go through a window to make a
winning.
Death on the Cabs.—The train thnt
arrived from the west on Tuesday
evening brought the dead body of a
man by the nume of Baker, who sud
denly expired on tho oars,. .From tbe
passengers we learned that tho deceased
got on tbe train at Palisade, and within
five minutes after the train started he
was a corpse. He was taken off at
this place, and on Wednesday was
burled in the grave-yard back of town.
He died of heart disease.
The Independent, iu speaking of Moi
tié Forsbay, the cyprlan who murdered
Kelly at Reno eight days ago, says:
"Our people will recollect this Moille

visitor with a blank look of semi-con
sciousness that went to hi* heart. He
asked her what bad ailed the child.
"StarvedI" she said fiercely, and a
half ravage expression dwelt In her
eyes, bnt passed away in a moment,

moans of grlc.*. Shocked beyond
measure, he went for assistance, and
the chHd was burled yesterday morn
log nnd the mother cared for. Her
story is the old, old tale of deception,
desertion and utter misery that »o often
ends in a suicide's grave, or tbe living
death of tbo maniac.

that Captain Page, owner of the Or*
an* Smelting Work» and the Monte
zuma mine, las sont forward a large
amount of.mate rial from below, to be
used at the «melting works at that

[ontezuma mine can be made to pay
handsomely, If properly worked.
Dksfkr and Rtchkr.—At α depth
of 110 feet, on the Incline at the south
end of tbe Arisona tunnel, the ledge
has increased to full four feet In size,
and Is composed all through of a very
fine quality of ore. Tbe owners of tbe
Arizona mine are feeling quite jubilant
over the Improved condition of their
property.
Couldn't 8k It.—We understand
that a distinguished citizen of Wlnne
raucca was down on the railroad, in
the direction of Oreana, this woek, In
search of signers to a petition asking
the Board or County Commissioners to
call an election for tbe removal of the
county seat. His success, however, was
not iu the blgliest degree satisfactory,
ns a majority of tho people of the
county are entirely satisfied with the
county seat where It Is.
Firzd Up.—The roasttng furnace at
tho tailings mill of the Arizona Com
pany was tired up on Thursday, and Is
now in successful operation. We are
not, however, able to give any results,
a* it was not fully heated ana in com
plete working order until yesterday,
too late for results this Week.
Killed at the Fikb.—There ap
pears now no grounds for doubt that
the life of one person was lost at the
fire on Κ street, near Sixth, on
Wednesday morning. Captain O'Bri
en, a man pretty woll known In some
portions of the olty, had been lodging
Γη the Mahg'ln building tor several
nights. It is known that he went to
bed there the night prevlpus to the
ti—. The bed he tfeptln was partially
tiurned. The man has not been seen
since the Are. A portion of hie cloth
ing, together with α comb and a spiel
mark piece be was known to bave In
his pockets were found near the bed.
The reasonable supposition is that the
man, suddonly awakened by the fire,
endeavored to make hU escape, but
was either caught and destroyed by
the flames, .or elao waa buried by tbe
foiling walls. If be escaped he did so
iu hid night clothes oaly, and would
doubtless, ere this, have appeared
among his friends to obtain clothing.

time to time. Lately tho bodies of
two lueu were found, burned so badly
as to be unrecognizable. For a long
time to come we shall hear of other
cases of men, hunters, land explorers
and othors who wero caught in the
woods on that fatal nlglit. 'it is stated
by good authority that an examination
of tho burned region of the Peshtlgo
river has brought out the bet that not
less than twelve hundred persons met
α fiery death through that terrible ca
tastrophe.

The Sociai, Evn,.—The police of
Salt Lake City, a few evenings ago,
made a raid on the houses of ill-fame
in that portion of Zlou. About twenty
men and women wore arrested, and α
portion of them were fined $100 each.
An appeal was taken to the United
States District Court. Judge McKean's
attltudo on this last lascivious" oper
ation will be looked for with some in
terest. The case places lils Honor in
an awkward predicament, aft those re
cently arrested by tbe Mormon author
ities are supposed to bo numbered

that the Cabinet on Wednesdsy exam
ined the 'proàpeotb* of the Emm* Sil
ver mine, andTfllscuised the connection
of the Mlnliter to England with It. It
was decided that there was no neces
sity for Immediate interference. The
Government will wait to hear What
Mr. Schenck says on the subject. In
this very bad business, at the best, It
1* now said that IT. S: Senator Stewart
is responsible for the wild and wicked
manner of advertising the Emma Min
ing Company In England. It Is not
readily seen how the discovery that
another prominent man has been as in
discreet, to say no worse, as has been
our Minister, can lessen or excuse the
latter. Stewart, as we learn from the
Washington Patriot, sailed from New
York city for London in July, after
conducting a successful contest against
the original ρ re-emptors of the Emma
mine. He and Curtis J. Hlllyer cham
pioned the claim of James E. Lyon of
Colorado, against Warren Hussey and
Walker Brothers, apostate Mormons,
the first proprietors. These latter were
backed up by William Park, of Ver
mont, once unsuccessful candidate for
the United Senate from California
against John Conness. Stewart resides
next door to General Schenck in Wash
ington, is a dashing adventurer And
speculator, who has made and lost
large fortunes in Nevada mines, re
ceiving, It Is said, as much as $300,000
for stock received as fees In a sluglt
operation. Schenck, Parkand Stewart
are the only Americans, except Bas
te r, named in the list of nine directors,
while Hniaejilsput-down as manager.
The Lyon and Park interests coalesced
by a compromise, both being afraid of
Judge McKean's Court lu Utah, and
its loose way of drawing Juries. Λ pa
tent being obtained, alter the compro
mise, this vast system of advertising
was designed and carried Into effect
by Stewart's advisers, and Schenck
was,drftwn Into tbo transaction. Im
mense sums of money have been made
within the past year by selling mines
in Utah to Englishmen, and tus reck
less experiment with the Emma mine
will probably give the oall to halt In
such dealings In the foreign markets for
the future. Mr. Sobenck's friends in
Washington are reported In much dis
tress over these disclosures.
