The caving of the ground over the Oxford mine caused the settling of the build ings from two to three feet. About twenty acre· in all have settled. Dam ages over $30,000. Immense lis«ures are in the principal streets and ave nues, and mauy houses will have to be pulled down. The vein which settled le known as the Diamond velu, of which 240 feet below the surface was worked out some ten years ago. Barnum, convicted of burglary, was sentenced to two years and six months in the Stato Prison. W. A. Spaulding, alias Eb. Los Asobi.bs, November 15.—Ad ditional particulars are received by last evening's mall, from Ε h re η berg, Arizona, of tho attack by Indians on the stage for California, near Wlcken burg. The stage left Wickenburg on Sunday morning. November 5th, about eight o'clock. Nine miles out, while crossing a sand arroyo, thoso on tho outside were fired upon by Indians on both sides of the road. Some of the savages were not over 50 or 60 feet from the stage. They were well armed with Spencer and Henry rifles. No bows nor arrows were used. The driver and two outside passengers fell off dead. The team turned ofT the road and ran up the arroyo. About thirty yards off tbe leader was shot and kill ed, and one of the rear horses wound ed. The team ran against a bank and stopped. Mr. Kroger was shot through the shoulder and Miss Mollio Sheppard whs shot through the arm. They Jump ed out and ran up the arroyo and were not pursued. After traveling nine miles they met the return mail stage and reached Wickenburg lu safety, suffer ing severely from their wounds and privationp. Mr. Sexton, Superintendent of the Culture mine, sent a posse of twenty Ivo armed men to the scene of the tragedy. The stage was riddled with bullets one mall Dag was ripped open uid the contents scattered, but nothing was taken. A roll of greenbacks me left untouched. Of those killed, six In all, Fred. [From tho New Or.ean» Time*.] Yesterday, at the request of many citizens in the neighborhood, Sergeant Gaudet and Corporal Nelson, of the police, visited an old house situated on the corner of Fonrth and St. Patrick streets. In which lived a man named Mike April, about thirty-two years of age, together with his wife, Catharine April, aged twenty-nine years, and two little twin children, boys, about half a year old. Such Is the alleged lieartlossnoss of the father that, though he owns the house and lot In which thoy live, val ued at $1,000, the children are, we hear, on the verge of starvation. The mother, bolng Insane, is unable to give them necessary nourishment, ana we are told they present in the utmost de gree a night horrible to witness, being (rightfully emaciated, and covered with putrifylng sores. It Is stated that Mlko April is an ha bitual drunkard, and too lazy to work. That one side of the houso is rented that when the rent is collected he spends It In liquor. In this state of Inebriation het It Is said, beats his wife most unmercifullv. and it is further alleged that her insanity originated from this puise. There Is only one old bedstead In the house, on which there is no bedding except oiio email, old and filthy mat tress, alive with vermlu. Oil this lay the woman aud poor children, who present a terrible appearance. The woman it shriveled, haggard and worn to nlinost nothing, having scarcely a rag to cover her nakedness, and is completely idiotic, having not even a gleam of recollection of lier children, or their condition. She is covered with sores and tilth of tho foulest de scription, her hair being a complote mass of vermin, and appearing as though it was rotting from her head. Πιο children, though over five mouths old, appear—such is their size—at if they had been only jnst born. Their heads and bodies nre one mass of sores—the flesh appearing as if it wore rotting from the bonea. They would havo died long ago, but that they had been partly cared for by the neighbors, who are themselves ex tremely poor. Indeed it is a matter of wonder how the family havo subsisted at all, they sometimes being, without t'ood for days. On some being given to the mother, she devoured it raven ously, as if she was a wild beast and not a human. It Is positively asserted that unless some Immediate change be made in her condition, and in that of her children, thoy cannot live. [From the Green Bay Advocsto.] There are some phases of the great calamity which fell- upon this region last week worthy of scientific investi gation. The testimony of the cooler Headed survivors of the fires at Pesh tlgo and Sugar Bush and Willlams vllle Is united as to one phenomenon. Thoy say that the fire did not come upoit them gradually from burning trees and other object* to the wind ward, but the first notice they had of It was a whirlwind of flame, in great clouds, from abovo the tops or the trees, which fell upon and enveloped everything. The atmosphere seemed one of fire. The poor people Inhaled It, or the intensely hot air, and fell down dead. This-la verified by the appearance of many of the corpses. They were found dead In the roads and open spaces where there were no visible marks of flre near by, with not a traco of burning upon their bodies or clothing. At* the Sugar Bush, which is an extended clearing, in some places four inll6s. In width, corpses wore found In the open road, between fences which were only slightly burnt. No mark of fire was upon them, but thay laid there as If asleep. This phe nomenon seems to explain the fact that so many were killed in compact masses. They seemed to have hud dled together in what were evidently regarded at the moment as tho safest f>laces, away front buildings, tree·, or nflammable materials, aud there to have died together. Fences around cleared fields were burned in spots of only a few rods in length, and else where not toncliod. Fish were killed in the streams—as at Peshtlgo. What other expla nation could De given to thAt immi nent time, when there was an ominous warning and sound coming from the distance; when the sky, so dark just before, burst Into great clouds of lire, the beasts of the forest came running for succor into the midst of the settle ments, and the great, red, consuming, roaring hell of tire fell upon all around. The dreadful scene lacked nothing but tho sounding of the last trump—and Indeed tho approach or the awful roar ing and the premonitions lrom tho dlstanc· supplied even that to the appalled Imaginings of the people. The Epsy theory, we think It Is, that continued and wlde-sprcnd fires will bring on rain, seems to bo ex ploded In this instance. Theso fires had lasted nearly or quite four weeks, ravaging forests over a great area, and still not a drop of rain. Colonel Fornoy writes "As mark ing the difference between the lawyers of the past and present, I heard au anecdote of John Sergeant the other day, which shows how the giants esti mated their professional services and by what sensitive and scrupulous rules they squared their actions. A distin guished merohant, still living, called upon Mr. Sergeant for his opinion In an important case, which was duly prepared and sent by ono of the stu dents of the great lawyer. A Bit of Family IIistobv.—The cloud of mystery which has heretofore shrouded the antecedents of Mrs. Vic toria C. Woodhull has lent an air of romance to tho history of her career as clairvoyant, broker and editor, aud given some color to the suggestion of her renowned biographer, that she was not born as common mortals are, but owed her origin to spiritual Influences. The Lowlsburg (Pa.) Chronicle, how ever, clears away something of this romance by publishing the following bit of family history During the year 1835, and for some years before and after, there lived on the farm now occupied by Samuel Gelst, In Union county, near the village of Now Ber lin, a poor but honest family, headed by a Mr. John Hammel.
