Thirty years ago Prof. Espy, a phil
osophical American, Ingeniously at
tempted to account, in a scientific
manner, lor the theory that great Are·
are a cause of rain. His belief was
that nothing but an immense fire was
necessary to bring down rain In an
artificial manner, and that, therefore,
at the cost of a few thousand dollar* in
the way of ftiel, a rain might be caused
to fall worth millions In a time of
drouth. He had noticed that, after the
burning of forests and prairies, there
usually was a heavy fall of rain, and
ho believed that the frequent showers
in London and other great cltlos had a
similar origin. It had been noticed,
long ago, that rains were supposed to
be drawn down by great battles (said
to be by the concussion In tho air by
cannonading), and it has long been be
lieved that they wore also Induced by
volcanic eruptions. It was noticed
that burning of large tracts of heath
er in Scotland had generally been fol
lowed by rain. Id an extant letter,
dated August 1, 1636, from the Earl of
Pembroke to the High Sheriff of Staf
fordshire, stating that tho King (Charles
I.) was about passing through that
county, It was stated that, as the burn
ing of fern was reputed to cause rain,
ho desired that the practice might be
discontinued during the vi3lt of tiie
King, so "that the country nnd him
eeif might enjoy fair weather as long
as be remains ia these parti." The
late conflagration in Chicago broke
out on the night of Sunday, October
8th, raged all the next day, and until
an early hour on Tuesday, the 10th,
when, the report say·, "a heavy rain
fell, extinguishing the flames."
Mr. Bakthoi-omew Clifford Gai/vto
has, in seems, sued Secretary Boutwell
for two million dollars, on the ground
that the Secretary of the Treasury has
stolen his ideas in the management of
the country's finances. Such a claim
is absurd on the face of it, if for no
other reason than that Mr. Boutweil
never takes anybody's ideas on finan
cial matters. This Mr. Galvln, accord
ing to the Springfield Republican, Is
one of many gentlemen who have in
vented financial plans and lost their
wits in the process. He Is an English
Irishman, who claims to have been em
ployed by the Barings as a financial
investigator, and who for nearly two
years has been inflicting upon the Sec
retary a scheme for equalizing gold
and greenbàcks and giving tiie Gov
ernment the entiro control of the
money market, all in less than thirty
days' time. He has not met with the
consideration and attention that he ex
pected, and hence his suit.

town last Tuesday, on tiie occasion of
the excursion to Steamboat. Lynch

Wheeler party, picked up somo papers

doubtless perished; and Lieutenant
Wheeler cannot be held blameless, for
he (ooa abandoned the search for the
missing guldo. We can give no fur

ship Edith, Millug on Tuesday Inst for
Sou Francisco, returned yesterday to

The first snow of the season here
commenced falling this morning. Ad

was washed away. The Morris Canal
overflowed, carrying off boat·», yachts
and lumber, and damaging $10,000

Tho action of the Trustees of the Eu
reka Consolidated Mining Company,
iu passing the dividend for this mouth
with $200,000 in the Treasury, is bit
terly denounced as a stock jobbing

the effect to depress the market for all
stocks more or less. Large sales of
the expected dividends wero made on
Tuesday at 75 cents down to 60 cents
by a ring of brokers who appear to
have been on the Inside.
The Bowery Consolidated Mill and

of clipped ςοίη. Some one here, sup
posed to be a Celestial, is in the habit
of taking off a dollar or two dollars

out the clipped spote bv milling the
coin. The lightened coin is easily de
tected if care in receiving money is
exercised. This lighter of x>in should
be detected. He lives in Grass Valley.

Bbutat, Outrage.—Wednesday last,
near Fish Springs, it mo3t brutal out
rage was committed by two brutes of
men, hailing from Bishop Creek, upon
two young Indian girls, th'e younger
not over .twelve years of age. As the
attempt was made within hearing of
■several houses In the neighborhood,
the screams of the victims were plainly
heard by a number of white men, but
not understanding the cause, they
only reached the ground in time to
see the villains mount their horses and
ride away. The mother of the younger
girl attempted to rescue them, as did
some other Indian women, several of
whom showed evidences of mal-treat
meut. The face of the younger girl
was much swollen and lacerated.
This outrage was committed In broad
day, almost under the eyes of half a
dozen white men but who could not
imagine that such a critno was being
committed, but supposed that It was
children playing or somo difficulty
among themselves. These people are
peaceable and well behaved, and are
constantly at work for somo of the
farmers, and justlco calls for tho In
terference of tho law to teach these
lawless wretches a lesson. San Quen
tin Is the place for such thing»; for the
miscreant who would commit such an
outrage upon an Indian girl bccauso
he thinks her unprotected, would do
the same with a white one if he did
not fear tho consequences. These two
creatures say they were summoned to
Independence as jurymen nice jury
men they would make to try a cAse,

A Juvenile Gut Fawkr.h.—Tho San
Francisco liulletin of tho 14th, has the
following
For some time past one of the lady
teachers of tho North Cosmopolitan
School has made a practice of having
all her fires made by the young lads
under her charge. They of course ob
jected, and at various times muttered
something about a janitor being paid
to do such work. They wore punished
for this by loss of credit marks, and
llnally resigned them to their doom as
tiro-builders. One boy in particular
was selected as tho one who should do
all the work. Ho muttered much, and
eventually struck upon a plan for his
emancipation. Several mornings since
he lit the fire as usual, and retired. In
a few moments a tremendous explosion
occurred, and the stove was left in a
condition that will permit of no more
tires being bullded in it. The explosion
did no material damago to any one,
but considerably frightened ail the
children and teachers in tho building.

!esterday morning a man giving his
name as A. L. Vernon called at the
Mayor's office, and requested Clerg
Patterson, In the absence of His Honor,
to procure him transportation to St.
Louis, on his homeward way to Col
orado. Ills story Is a very sorrowful
one, and Is doubtless truthful. For
Ave years he and two other men,
named Dlckerson and Knssell, had
been engaged in mining a claim situ
ated about 180 miles west of Denver
and in that time their joint savings
amounted to $18,000 in gold dust, two
thirds of which belonged to Vernon.
Some weeks ago the mines were told,
and the three started East to dispose
of their gold. They purchased tickets
for New York via Baltimore, and,
arriving in the Monumental City In
the evening, concluded to pais the
night there and then go on In the
morning. The three roomed together,
and In the mocnlng Mr. Vernon found
that his companions had deserted him,
carrying with them his 113,000. As
may well be supposed, the poor fellow
was much distressed at. his loss, re
marking of Dlckerson, at the Mayor's
office, with a pathos that Bret Harte
might borrow to advantage, that he
hua ''slept under the snow and gone
through hard times with that man, and
I thought 1 could trust him." The
case was put in charge of Baltimore
and New York detective», but they
were unaoie to onecc tno arrose οι inn
thieves or recover the gold dust. Mr.
Vernon'8 money was soon expended
In the hunt, and ho ilnally determined
to return to Colorado, where he had
left Ills wife and two children. He
was passed on his way free to this city
by police authorities In the East, and
here transportation was furnished him

inents.

William Grinder, of Port Morris,
N". J., was recently lodged In the
County Jail at Morristown, charged
with having murdered Hiram Dean
Foster in a light at Port Morris on the
night preceding. It appears from the
statement of Lewis L. Waldron, a
carpenter, who witnessed the affray,
that Grinder, who is the proprietor of
a saloon in Port Morris, quarreled
with Foster about seventy-flve cents,
which Grinder claimed to be duo him.
Angry woods led finally to threats,
antl ended lu a tragedy. Waldron's
statement, given In his own language,
Is as follows
I was at work on the houso adjoin
ing Grinder's shanty, and saw four or
five men come up two men named
Burns and Murray went in they had
a dispute Murray got a quart of whis
ky and came out, being followed by a
boy named John Plngerton, who had
a pistol in his hand, and threatened to
shoot Murray If lie did not bring baok
tho whisky. The boy's mother then
cam ο out and took tho pistol from him.
She afterward gave It to Grinder, who
turned and shot Foster. He then
turned and fired at Burns, but tho lat
ter caught his arm and escaped the
shot. Foster lived about half an hour.
The only words he said wore, You
have shot me."
Grinder was Immediately arrested,
and was afterward takeu to jail at
Morristown. Detective DeWltt after
ward arrested tho boy Plngerton. and
also secured the pistol with which the
murder was committed.
The murdertid man was about thirty
years old, and bore α good reputation.
Grinder has been known as α danger
ous character, and the people of Port
Morris arc deeply.cxcited aud indig

The Chicago fire furnished a good
test of the value of different kinds of
building material. Limestone crum
bled and melted away like tho fluxing
of α furnace tarred roofs and wooden
cornices furnished the best points for
Ignition. Cast iron dissolved aud ran
away; thin partition walls of soil
brick furnished no effectual barrier to
the Ate. Granite stands the flro bet
ter. But it is now well known that
hard burned brick laid Into a thick
wall is as nearly fire-proof as any ma
terial within reach. Cast iron and
marblo fronts will go down in ovory
great conflagration. The value of
good material and α thoroughly con
structed edifice le well illustrated In
the case of the Chicago Tribune build
ing, which cost something over two
hundred thousand dollars. It resisted
the fire after all tho structures in that
vicinity had been destroyed. But
when the fire did take possession of It
afterwards, it was found that the edi
fice could bo put in order again for
150,000. Λ thoroughly flre-proof roof ι
Is something yet to be invented. The
slate, which is proof against olnders,
cracks and falls off in a fierce heat.
Probably tile would make a lire-proof
roor, Duc very row are raaue in mis
vicinity. So far as we can learn,
wrought Iron beams did not give way,
while the cast iron was molting like
butter. It is stated that tho Court
ΙΙοιιβο, which has been through one
stage of construction after another for
llftcen years, bad α tarred roof and a
wooden dome. The edlfloe went off
so briskly that not oven the records of
tho county could bo secured. It is
now well established that a wooden
dome is not lire-proof in Chicago.—S.

following acconnt of a most dastardly
affair in tho Oregon Dnnocral
An i'nfamoui villain named .Tohn
Poster, who Is a well known thief and
gambler, at the State Fair last week
ingratiated himself into tho favor of
an nnsuspectlng young girl, and suc
ceeded, by coaxing and lies, in getting
her to accompany lilrn to Portland on
tho cars. Arriving at Portland, he
took the helpless and friendless maiden
to a hotel, and, locking himself iu a
room with her, accomplished her ruin
by threats and violence. lie then took
lier to a bouse of ill-fame, when she
was shortly rescued by tho vigilance
of tho police and turned over to hor
father, who had been summoned to
her relief. The name of tier father Is
withhold out of consideration for the
family, who are wealthy and respect
ed citizens of Marion county. The
leaberous villain was committed to jail
in default of $10,000 bail. The law
has no penalty too aevero to inflict
upon him in this world, and perdition
no torments too painful for lilm in the
next.

Agricole, who drives α wagon for A.
Kraft, a grocery keeper on Broadway
and Logan streets, attempted to un
hitch his horso from tho wagon, when
the horse bit him very severely on the
irm. He called to Mr. Kraft, who
came to hie asslstanoe, and attempted
to tie the horse In the stable, when the
vicious animal made a furious bite nt
him, and tore his right eye entirely
from the socket, and also took a large
portion of the flesh from Mr. Kraft's

Every one who bu ever traveled In
a railway car must have been greatly
annoyed by the flying dtut and cin
der» which prevent proper ventilation
and cause so much discomfort to the
person. To avoid this disagreeable
accompaniment of railway travel nu
merous expedients have been tried,
but none with the success attained by
the recent invention of a gentleman in
Gloucoster. The main point in this
contrivance lies In the fact that the
smokestack of the engine, instead of
being vertical, ae it generally the case,
Is bent backward and theu upward,
spreading widely at the mouth. With
in the stack at the second curve is
placed a wire screen at an angle of
forty-five degrees with the course of
the smoke, and the usual lire screen is
stretched across the mouth. The dust
and cinders carried into the stack are
stopped by the slanting screen, and
fall Sack harmlessly, the second screen
assisting by catching what few grains
the first allows to pass. Besides these
two screens another means of preven
tion Is provided in the shape of a small
hot water pipe In the stack, from
which a spray Is produced that wets
the cinders, deadening them aud as
sisting them iu their passage Into a
waste pipo below, which carries them
to a box at the side of the engine.
This attachment may be used or not
at the pleasure of the engineer, being
Governed by a stopcock from the boiler,
'his Invention has been on trial upou
the Fitchburg Railroad during the
past three weeks with sutfloient suo
cess to warrant the Inventor In push
ing his plans to perfection. The ad
vantage of tho curved stack is not only
In tho prevention of dust and cinders
upon tue train, but to avoid tho dam
age bv lires along tho track, which
have bean the cause of so much fix
pen so to railway companies. This
fatter object Is completely attained,

most curious part of the story, how
ever, Is that when Barnum's show left
town the shocking example was driv
ing one of the cages. It is probable
that Mr. Barnum'· timely admonition
had effected the poor fellow's reform
but scoffers wickedly insinuate that he
Is tho samo gifted Individual who, in
tho guise of a green countryman, and
In a condition of simulated ebrlety,
daily astonishes visitors to tho show
by his wonderful exploits lu riding
tho educated mnlos.
Too Bad.—A dispatch from Scran
ton, Penn., states that the Rev. Mr.
Dovlllu, a meek and lowly follower,
etc., preached α sermon In the streets,
in which he referred to Catholics as
"thieves, cut-throats and murderers,"
on which some one kicked away the
box on which be stood and the Rever
end Devil fell to the ground and hurt
himself. When he next gets tho devil
in him to such an extent as to Induce
him to blackguard Christians, Mr. De
vllin will probably be finished up.
