Tn* Chicago journals, with great unanimity, deny the terrible stories of the incidents of the great Are, which were transmitted by the letter writers to the New York newspapers. The hanging and shooting of incendiaries, the burning of the prisoners at the Conrt House, the fearful profanities of homeless women of the baser sort, the robberies In the streets, are all asserted to be "pure and baseless fictions." It may be remembered that the origin of the Aro was ascribed to tho careless nee· of a 44 Mrs. O'Leary," who had taken a keroeene lamp into her barn, where she had gone at a late hour, to milk her cow. The Chicago Tribune publishes affidavits from tho accused woman and lier husband denying this story, and asserting that no lamp bad been carried Into the yard or barn that night or evening. Another affidavit also shows that the accused parties were iu bed at the tirao the fire broke out, and were rescued by a neighbor. This unfortunate couple lost their barn, five cows and a horso and wagon, but saved their houso, iu consequence of the vigorous exertions of frieuds. There seems, however, to be ao doubt that the fire in Chicago, on Sunday night, October Sth, commenced at the 41 O'Leary Barn," a3 one affidavit dis tinctly asserts that the alarm was started by the discovery that tho huy In the toft was on Are. The Times has luformatlon from the Captain of the steamer Herman lead ing to the belief that A. J. Garvey and wife went in the steamer under the assumed namo of McDonald, and on their arrival at Bremen proceeded to Basle, Switzerland. The Graud Jury was dismissed yes terday, without Hudlug a bill against Tweed. His case will be brought be fore a new Grand Jury, to be impan eled on Monday. Cavallier, of the Board of Brokers, Is said to be one of the heaviest losers, and It Is reported that he lias taken out an attachment for f'20,000. Tue recent triumph of the Democ racy iu Texa3, through Intimidation and violence, has emboldened the Kuklux to Mich a decree that another reign of terror far worse than that of 1SGS, when lawlessness and assassina tion were rampant, U threatened. France, through' the recent treaty with Germany, may soon expcct the final departure ot the conquercrs from her soil. The Prussian evacuation of the six departments named in the Con vention is already proceeding quietly. The dis covery of the open Polar Sea by the German expedition brings to recollec tion the second Arctic exploration of Dr. Ε. K. Kane, nud his perilous over land journey to a point from which he saw, In the inaccessible distance, tho unfrozen waters of the clrcumpolar ocean. This discovery ot Dr. Kan·, although credited by many persons, was not accepted as an Incontroverti ble fact. Sleep Walking.—An exchange says one of the greatest feats of sleep walking on record, was lately per formed by a married lady, who re sides at Onondaga, South Hollow. At about 1 o'clock In the morning this lady dreamed that her father, who re sides near Hastings, Oswego county, was very sick, and had sent for her to visit him Immediately. She arose from bed, dressed herself and started on foot to Liverpool, where she thought she could take the cars on the Northern Railroad, for Hastings. She nrrlvcd at Liverpool, and stopped at the house of α Justice of the Peace ot the town of Salina, at a little after daylight. Daring all this tlmo the lany was sound asleep, and did not awake until after arriving at the house. Her feet were sore, aud one of her ankles badly swollon from the effects of her long walk, and the last sho could romember before arriving at the house was the dream that her fathor was dangerously 111 and de sired her immediate presonce. Narrow Escavk.—On Sunday after noon, ai the Vallejo train was leaving the depot, tho immense crowd gath ered there to witness the departure of the San Francisco Cadets, came near being the unwilling witness of a most «hocking accident. A woman, who had not noticed the signal of all aboard, started to the cais, while they were under rapid headway, and made an effort to jump on one of the plat forms, but not being strong enough was thrown violently back, and, still clinging to tho railing, was dragged some distance. Luckily, Dr. Justin Gates, who was standing by, cuielit her about the body and rolieved her from hor dangerous position, and no doubt saved her life. Those who saw her fall expected to witness her horri ble death under the wheels of the train. The chuuks of rich material had evidently beeu scraped up among burnt rags and crumbled bricks and mortar.
