received tbe indications are that a light
vote comparatively has been cast, but

All tbe news from Chicago is cheer
ing. Trade is resuming its wonted
channels. Thousands of men are at
work, buildings of brick and stone are
going up, tho hotels are again in full
blast, banks arc receiving more money
than paying out, wheat is shipped
almost as before, and all the news·
papers are out, looking about as before
tbe Are. The weather Is excellent,
and never were a naturally energetic
people more energetic and hopeful.

Sunday morning, to search for the
body of Mrs. Xleers. He has a party

pose of dragging the deep well springs
below the Jaques place. Patterson
will begin at Ezan and examine the
country closely fora distance of thirty
miles toward Toano, following the
route that Meers traveled as near as

Whxn Misa Hicks, of Troy, recently
mysteriously disappeared from her
home, some of hor relations consulted
a clairvoyant, who at once told them
that the unfortunate lady had been
murdered, giving a full description of
the manner of her untimely taking off.
The seer gave certain particulars re
lating to Miss Ulcks which her friends
were ftilly satisfied could not have
been known to any one except her Im
mediate relatives, and this served to
convince them that the clairvoyant
was worthy of all belief. Their faith
In her revelations was somewhat
their solicitude was found in Boston iu
excellent bodily health.
Officiai, liste of the losses of the
German armies in the recent war with
France have been completed. The
total stated Is 111,000, of whom 13.000
are set down a3 dead, 87,000 wounded,
and 6,000 missing. The smallnoss of
the figures Is surprising, bui. their accu
racy Is vouched for by the official au
thorities. Of courso the German
armies wero everywhere victorious,
and everywhere made advances, and
these favorable circumstances had
much to with reducing their losses.
It is the defeated and disheartened
army that always suffers the mo5* in a
campaign. The exhilaration of success
Is a surprising euro for the wounded
soldier. _
Tine station masters and flagmen on
the Fitchburg, Mass., Kailroud, it is
stated, have been supplied with six
minute sand glasses. When a train
passes the glass I* turned, and if au
othor train going iu the samo direction
approaches before the six minutes are
over, a red flag is displayed to stop the
train until the required time has
•lapsed, when two flags, a red and a
white, are displayed, signifying that
the second train must proceed with
caution." When the first alx minutes
have elapsed without the appearance
of a train, the glass Is again tamed
and If a train comes along before the
sand has run down, tho signals men
tioned above are displayed. After
twelve minutes a white flag shows that

noral principle In man which we call
:onsclence. Much controversy has

dement of our constitution. It is only
>y the workings of the conscience that
:he existence of conscience can be
demonstrated, but theso are so uni
versal and emphatic that all other
evidence seems superfluous. Every
jne who turns his eye Inward U aware
of an Intuitive perception of right and
wrong, and a corresponding sense of
obligation to embrace the one and
repel the other. Looking back, we can
recall no time when this sense was
absent. Tu the young child It serves
os a basis for all moral teaching; not
a result which we produce, but a native
principle to whtch we appeal. It Is
not the judgment Impressing us with
the tendencies ot certain actions, for
it regards them with approval or dis
pleasure according to their moral
qualities, and quite apart from their
consequences. The conviction, "I
ought," deals only with the just, the
true and right as such, not with their
results, and is eternal and authorita
tive, admitting of no compromise and
appealing to no other standard. Right
is absolute In Itself, but relative as
regards human actions men's notions
of it are imperfect and progressive,
and they aro only accountable for act
ing up to their present attainments.
Thus many things that were relatively
right to past generations are wrong to
the present one, because of its moral
progress; and many others that are
relatively right now, according to
present discernment, may be classed
as wrong in a future and more ad
vanced age. Conscience, then, is not
concerned with our position in the
scale of knowledge or judgment. It
takes us exactly where we are, and its
province is wholly with the motive,
tiio disposition, me muiuiuuo <jl mis
taken methods by which men strive to
carry out good motives como not
within its realm to forbid, until Mure
advancement reveals their error. Is,
then, It may be asked, wrong-doing
ever justifiable? Is the motive to vin·
dlcato the deed, however injurious that
deed may be? There is one duty
which, if faithfully performed, will
disp«l this difficulty. It is, to use all
available means of improving the
judgment, of elevating the moral tone,
of raising the standard of right. If
this is done, if we hold our opinions
open to correction, if we love truth
and right in their wholeness, moro
than any cherished fragments if we
are ever eager learner* as well as
earnest doers then no more will be
required of us but perfect obedience to
tho dictates of our individual con
sciences. It Is willful ignorance, blind
prejudice, contracted notions, that aro
to blame for what is called conscien
tious wrong-doing. Strictly speaking,
however, there is no such thing, for
self-enlightenment in its brondest sense
is surely as much a conscientious duty
as any other, and the man who neglects
it, who wrap3 himself up in the thick
mantle of ignorauce, who refuses to
welcome the light of truth, cannot be
said to have satisfied In any degree
whatever tho mandates of his con
science. The influence which con
science exerts over society Is not easily
appreciated. With all the vice and
wrong that we see around us, we aro
apt to forget how large a proportion
of human acts are really consci«ntious
in their source. The trust which is so
generally reposed in man, is trust in
the universal conscience. After making
due allowanco for the Influence of self
ishness, we expect that in most cases
justice and kindly feeling will
actuate the conduct, and to a great
extent they do. This spontaneous
goodness, however, while showing the
harmony of uature, must not be con
founded with the brave and resoluto
choicc which conquer* temptation and
trial, and nobly espouses the cause of
right, just as fast and as far as it is
discoverable. This it is which marks
the good man and dcvelopes and exalts
his character. Ho does right with the
full energy and determination of his
heart and soul. Cultivating every fac
ulty, and bending all his powers to tho
enlightenment of his judgment and
tho acquirement of truth, he recog
nizes the reflection of the Divine nature
tlnU dwells within him, and to its
sacred authority alone he yield* a glad
homage and an unquestionable obedi
ence.
Ranches, Horses and Cattle Burn

dispatch of the 19th instant gives tho
following intelligence
Extensive and destructive tires have
been raging during the past few days
in the vicinity of Squabble Hollow and
the watering places of the Watsonville
stage road, devastating whole tracts ot
country and destroying many ranches.
Boomers' âne ranch at Squabble Hol
low, with dwelling, barn, oxtcnslve
outbuildings and fencing, is among
those destroyed. His loss will exceed
$10,000. People living on the Watson
ville stage road were engaged the
whole of last night in making efforts to
subdue the fire, women and ohlldreu
assisting In the task of fighting the
flames, in order to preserve their homes
from destruction. It is impossible to
give anything like a correct estimate
of the eutirc amount of loss yet. The
burnt district is nine miles In length
by about four In width, and, independ
ent of the lose occasioned by the de
struction of much valuable timber, the
losses in farm buildings, dwellings,
horses, cattle and other property, will
aggregate a serious amount.
Onioks weighing a pound apiece art
raised iu Colorado. They have a de
licious taste, and their odor is like the
breath of spices from Araby the Blest.
It is expected that a great business
will be done tn exporting these won
derful onions eastward.

DOMESTIC INTELLIGENCE.
Milwaukee, October 19.—The Deer
County Advocate contalus a full ac
count of the loss of llfo and property
by the lires In that county up to Sun
day night, the 8th instant. Fires had
been raging through the towns oi
Brussels, Union, Gardnor, Forrestvillci
Claybank, Sturgeon Bay and Sebasto
pol, burning fences and timber, but
leaving houses untouched. Ât 9 p. u.
Sunday, a flery tornado swept down
from' the southwest, beginning at the
Belgian settlement in Brussells, sweep
ing through the towns of Gardner,
Union, western part of Sebastopol,
down to East Shore bay. Every build
ing in its path was consumed.
At Williamson's shingle mill every
thing was burned, and a most awful
destruction of human life ensued. Of
SO persons at the mill, 57 were burned
to death. The few survivors tell a hor
rible of scenes at this terrible calamity.
Forty-five bodies were found in a po
tato patch In the center of the clearing.
Other bodies were /ound some In
wells, somo scattered. There were
many disfigured in a terrlblo manner
In some cases beyond recognition.
This great destruction was but the
work of fifteen minutes, and was the
same tornado that burned up Peshtlgo
and 1,200 human beings.
A number of other losses of lifo are
reported in other place?. Twenty-two
In the town of Brussels suffered a like
fate. There is scarcely a house or barn
left standing in the lino of this fire.
Efforts for help to the sufferers are not
spared hero or anywhero in the State,
and donations from abroad are coming
along just in time to make comfortable
those who survived.

The entertainment of the pupils of the
public schools, originally intended for

A. E. Ilill, late note teller of tlio

telegraphed three days ago, died last
night.
Admiral Wlnslow has consented
that the United States steamer Califor

The California Glove Company in
forms the public that the impression
that California ground squirrel «kins
are valuable for gloves, Is wholly er
roneous. They havo no value what
ever, except to the original proprietor,
and the large shipments which have

Lane, tho old inebriate who was
arrested on suspicion of killing bis
wife, who was found with her neck
broken, tied to a bedstead, at their
house at Potroro last week, is to be
sent to the Insane Asylum to-dny,
being a raving maniac.
A new move In the Lake.Tahoe
woter enterprise Is on the tapis, and
will soon be announced. The tunnel
is certain to bo commenced soon.
Stock sales on the street are not
lively to-day, outsiders being (incertain
and doubtful about sailing in. There
are symptoms, however, of a speedy
recovery of the market, the bears hav
ing evidently weakened on their grip.

Finn at Ει,κο.—A fire broke out In
Elko Thursday evening, which for a
time bid fair to wipe out the whole
village, but was finally subdued after
having destroyed about one-fourth of
the town. About one-half tho build
ings on the south side of the main
street were destroyed. Up to the time
of going to press, wo were unable to
get any particulars as to the origin of
the Are or the amount of the losses.—

The Corralll* (Oregon} Gazette says
Gilbert Clute, better known as Hons.
De Clute, announced that be would
walk a tight-wire from the roof of the
City Hotel to the roof of the California
Hotel (better known as Eagle saloon),
on Saturday last. A*t the appointed
tlmo be commenced his ascent from
the California Hotel roof, and walked
half way over, when the fastening· on
the City Hotel began to slip through
the blocks whloh held it. Mr. Clute
feeling that it would be unsafo to pro
ceed farther, returned to bis starting
point (all the time displaying great
skill and presence of mind). The wire
was tightened by six stout men with a
double block and tackle attached to
the end of it. Being satisfied that it
was secured, he again asccuded, walked
about midway, and performed some
difficult feats, such as hanging by one
hand, foot, etc. While In the act of
balancing himself on one foot the wire
suddenly snapped and precipitated
him to the hara gravel beneath, a dis·
tance of thirty feet or more. He was
carried into the City Hotel, and after
being washed and examined, was
found to be fatally Injured. H's spine
was dislocated, his leet crushed tn a
horrible maimer, and his right hip
was badly bruised. The balance pole,
which he carried in his hands, struck
him just under the eye, producing a
frightful wound.
Mr. Clute is a saddler by trede, hav
ing worked α long time at that busi
ness in Walla Walla. He Is α native
of Cold Water, Branch county. Michi
gan, whore his folks live. Wo are
pained to eay that our doctors seem to
think there Is no hopo for his recovery.
He is, however, receiving all the at
tention possible to bestow upon any
one.

Haute, Indiana, olevon months ago,
with an empty carpet-bag and depleted

sary for the happiness of anyone man.

and last Sunday was appointed for the
wedding to come off. Saturday even
ins; letturs were received by the uncle
of the young lady, making inquiries of
the "carpet-bagger." The letters said
that he nad two wives living in the
States—one at Green Bay, Wisconsin,
and the other at Terre Haute, Indiana.
He deserted the last wife taking all
the available means he could lay hi*

of the necessaries or life. We should

Insulting a Witness.—In the Court
of Quarter Sessions in Philadelphia,
the other day, Judge Picrce lined Ed
gar M. Chlpman, a member of the bar,
$25 for contempt of Court, in having
doclared to a witness whilo under ex
amination that he was guilty of per
jury. The Judge said that a witness
on the stand, or whilo attending
Court, is entitled to protection from
all outrages of his feelings or person
and that, although in order to elicit
the truth, the ingenuity and even tho
boldness of couusol may bo exercised
towards a witness who is obstinate or
refractory, or who prevaricate?, to go
beyond this and charge him with false
hood is to pass from tho domain of
reason and examination into that of
passion and outrage upon the proprie
ties of the occasion, the dignity of tho
Court and tho rights of the witness.
Fire in Paradise Vat.lby.—Some
villainous compound in tho shapo of
humanity, flrod tho grass in Paradise
Valley last Sunday. The grass being
very dry and a heavy breeze blowing
down tbe valley at the tlmo, caused
the lire to spread with such rapidity
that all efforts to stay its progress
Î(roved fruitless. On Wednesday morn
ng when the stago left tho valley, the
flro had burned over seven or eight
thousand acres of the very best grass
lands in tbe valley, in fact tho only
part of the valley considered valuable
for Winter forage. Stock men will
now have to look elsewhere foi» Winter
quarters. Tho party or parties found
guilty of such an infamous act should
do arretted and punished to tho full

Paradise.—The threshing season in
Paradise Valley is over. The farmers
in the valley have produced this year
130,000 bushels of grain, a large por
tion of which is wheat. The grist mill
at the head of the valley will turn out
this season about 300,000 pounds of
flour, enough to supply this county
until another crop is raised. The
barley crop Is considerably below that
of former years, and will not be suffi
cient to supply the demand in thli
