Yesterday was the third day of the
races, and notwithstanding tho rather
dusty aud disagreeable weather tho
attendance was very good and much
interest was manifested. The after
noon was uiore pleasant than the morn
ing promised. Following were the offi

For the great trotting race, free for
«11, best three in five, for the Club's
purse of #100, the two horses. Copper
head and Jim Cook, were the contest
ants. From the Carson lit<jist*r we
condense the following items: Copper
head won the Inside track, aud was
driven by his owner, Peter (jroodlme,
who weighed lt>3 pounds. Jim Cook
was driven by Dan Denuison, of Sae
ramento, who weighed 154 pounds.
At 1:40^ p. m. the horses got an even
«tart for the tlr-t heat. To the first
quarter Cook led then Copperhead
cam· up and passed him two feet. At
the hair pole Cook again took the lead,
and maintained it to the last—coming
out 20 feet ahead, in 2:49.
In tho second heat the horses also
f[0t an even start. Jim Cook took the
ead o:i the first quarter, but broke aud
was overtaken by Copperhead at the
Italf pole. Then Cook got ahead again
and was overtaken on the home stretch
by Copperhead—the two coming out
in 2:50>4 so nearly even that the heat
was docided dead. Copperhead was
ahead at the outcome perhaps the deptli
of his jaw, but as he had broken on
the homestretch (and thereby gained)
the heat was very properly called
"dead." At 2:43 the horses again got
a beautiful start. Jim Cook soon took
the lead, and, with varying fortunes,
maintaiàed it to the end, coming out
fifty feet ahead, in 2:45\i.
At 3:0S the horses got an exactly
even start for the fourth heat. Copper
head led to the first quarter, then lost
up to his shoulder; gaiued a littlo
from the half to the threo-quarter pole;
lost on the home quarter, and came in
half a neck ahead, in 2:46.
At 3:31 the horses again started for
the fifth and last heat, Copperhead
•bout a shoulder ahead. On tne first
quarter Jim Cook pulled up even, and
at three-quarters he had opened a gap

tancing Copperhead by more than 40
feet.

susceptible John I. Ginn, of the Carson
Itcjister, waxed quite eloquent during
the heat of last summer over the glow
ing charms of a mermaid he discovered
or dreamed of in Lake Tahoo. If all
reports are true, however, that mer
maid was nearer home. John isn't.

Such items win his local soul and hold
him a willing subject.

last some rcckleas or probably drunken
fellow fired a pistol shot through a
front window of the Railroad Lodging
liouse, at the upper part of Gold 11111.
The ball made a clean round hole
through a pane of glass, and was fodnd
on the floor. The fellow was not seen,
neither is It known or suspected who
he was or what was his object.
Tint Chicago Benefit Coxceut.—
The vocal and Instrumental concert
given last evening, at Piper's Opera
House, for the beneSt of the Chicago
sufferers, was very well attended, the
dress circle especially being well filled.
The entertainment was short, sweet,
and in most respects highly and unex
pectedly amusing. The audience cer
tainly enjoyed it very much, and ail
went home laughing. The perform
ance was not characterized by any
rigid adherence to programme, therein
lending the Additional charm of re
freshing novelty, some of the vocalists
and instrumental performers not ap
pearing, while at least one singer not
ou the bills at all generously volun
teered. Miss Belle 'fauslg, the origin
ator of the concert, appeared on the
stage, but owing to a severe cold, was
unfortunately unable to slug, and
therefore had to he excused. Her lit
tle sister Emma made a great hit in
her Sketches <t la Vivian, showing de
cided talent in ono so younç, and was
deservedly applauded and encored.
She dressed, sang and acted lier
sketches in pleasing, graceful, easy
style, better than even some profes
sionals have done on that same stage.
Mrs. Satier sang some favorite ballads
in her own pleasing style, and was
much applauded. Lindsay's songs
«·<·ΙΙ rwiiveil. Ms usual, althoucli
twice Ιιο broke down totally, through
laughter, not being able to "keep his
pucker." aud induced a vast amount
of sympathetic laughter troin the au
dience. Mr. F. Hitter succeeded very
well in his ballads. He has an excel
lent tenor voice, which only needs con
fidence aud experience to'develope it
properly. Jacobsou's violin solo was
tincly and artistically executed, Prof.
Strange accompanying on the piano.
The quartette of Messrs. Pasmore,
Lindsay. Fredericks and Hull was well
given. Prof. Sailer lent his efficient
assistance at the piano, and the Opera
IIouso orchestra also aided in the in
strumental part of tho entertainment.
The concert being given solely for the
geueral benefit of the Chicago suflfer
eo, and not for the relief of any par
ticular class or sect, no one could
complain of disappointment or be
grudge what little they were thus in
duced to give toward the worthy ob
ject. The proceeds amount to over
#400, and there being little or no ex
pense attending it, the whole amount
will be forwarded to Chicago. It is a
very good contribution from the citi
zens of this locality, considering the
recent destructive lires, aud highly
creditable to Miss Tauslg, who origi
nated the coucert. and by the most
arduous and unwearied efforts carried
it to a successful culmination despite
all adverse Influences. All who as
sisted arc correspondingly entitled to
credit.
Burulary Last Nioiit.—Sometime
during last night the Washington
House, on tho Divide, between hero
and Virginia, at the junction of tho
American Flat grade, was entered by
burglars and about every room in tho
house gone through. The pockets of
several ot the boarders were searched,
but only yielded from four bits to a
dollar caeh. Mrs. Wright's room,
however, was robbed of in coin,
which was concealed under tho head of
a lounge aud only found after much
search. The thieves were not heard at
all. They are evidently the saine ones
who operated so successfully In several
houses in Gold llill a week or so ago.
Their only object seems to be money,
as they steal nothing else. It might
be a little risky to leave Gold watches
or diamonds lying about loose where
they can find them. As wo have before
stated, some of the escaped convicts
are said to be lurking about this vicin
ity, therefore |>eople should be on their
guard and keep their windows and
doors well sccurcd and pistols loaded.
Mus. Field's Readings To-jnom·.—
This evening. Mrs. M. Field, the pop
ular Shakespearian and variety reader
and lecturer will give a series of favor
ite dramatic impersonations in charac
ter at Theater Hall, Gold Hill. Her
programme includes the tlrst and third
acts ot Hamlet, the laughable Lady
Gay Spanker, the humorous recitation's
of "My Whiskers," and "Six Ages of
Woman," and she will conclude with
Klizabeth, Queen of England. In this
last character her impersonation is said
to equal that of the justly celebrated
actress, Mrs. Bowers. The great suc
cess Mrs. Field has met with elsewhere
justifies the expectation that she will
succeed fully as well with our critical
dramatic judges. The prices of admis

District Court— Rising, Jcdgk.—
Iii this Court yesterday, the arguments
of counsel 0:1 both sides, in the cas ο of
James Murray, indicted for killing
Jabez Spencer, were concluded about
noon, and the case given to the jury.
After being out all the afternoon, in
the evening the jury returned a verdict
of manslaughter, with recommendation
to the mercy of the Court. He will
receive his sentence at 10 o'clock a. m.
on Monday next. This morning A.
Graham plead guilty to assault and
battery.
Target Excursion.—Tho National
Guard's annual target excursion and
parade takes placo to-morrow at Vir
ginia. In the evening a Hue vocal
and Instrumental entertainment will
be given for their benefit at the Opera
