To the uninitiated the advertisements in eler
ical newepai<eie, -inserted by help-seekin*
incumbents tlesiring curates, "unmarried pre
ferred." apt* ar innocent enough. In nut
a few casin. however. t!?e wisdom of the serpent
iu the advertiser* somewhat overpowers th.j

tolerably well bred and agreeable, will be

a lack; mothers' m ttintfs will llo'irish, and
maternity societies and clothing clubs will bs
well to the fore. This, of course, is nure
oj-ecially. though bv no means exclusively,
true of country parishes, where the limited
circles in which" the Sarah Marys and Betsey
.lanes revolve, rentier an educated gentle
man. well within reaeh, a r.-al acquisition wh?n
regarded with a ma'nmonial eye. Further, It
is one of the particularities incident to the in
termediate sex between men and wiim^-n, to
wbich clergvinen have b< eii said to belong, that
instead of making love, they are quite as often
made love to. This occasionally reaches an ex
tent wbich would be ludicrous if it were not dis
gusting. We have h- ard of one young priest
who. in self-defence, m*rri<?d the" least objec
tionable of his district visitors as the only feasi
ble means of freeing himself from the atten
tions of his half-dozen paroehialixing sis tors.
Young curates are frequently not the wisest
l>eopte in the world, and though everybody else
in a parish sees what is going on, the victims re
main in sweet innocence until their doom is as
good as sealed.
Although we believe that not a little of the
blame attaching to religious flirtation rests on
the shoulders of the parochial women-kind, we
are far from thinking them alone in fault. It is
only occasionally that such very serious meas
ures are indispeio-ible as in the sad case above
cited. However fierce love be ma Je to a curate
he may put a stop to it if he pleases, or we should
perha|* rather say that, unless he shows in one
way or another that be is not indisposed to take
part in it, the advances from the other side will
not be of long duration. There are not a few
who scorn to accept is as only a natural supposi
tion that one use of district visitors is to make
curates' wivea. Lady assistants are to a certain
extent indisi>ensible in a parish, and though the
members of the clerical staff may not as a rule
be tieeply read in Shakespeare, they are fully
l*epartd to act u|*>n his maxim that *<What
cannot be eschewed must be embraced."
It is quite clear that with the generality of
people all this is taken for granted, and a pa
rix hial young lady is considered as a very eligi
ble sort of being for a clergywoman when her
time comes. We remi mber reading some time
ago in a popular magazine one of those offensive
things, a clerical love story, and the illustration
represented the pattern curate, with unexce|>
t onal coat and tie, whispering soft things into
the ear of a fashionably dressed irirl gracefully
jx'ttd, who was decorating a font for Christmis
tide. The picture spoke volumes, though not
very flattering either to the clerical or to the lay
mind. It showed not only that one of the arts i
which youthful clericals are to be generally j
supposed master of, is the art of love, but the
art is expected to be exercised in all places and
uruler all circumstances, no matter when or
where. To constitute a model curate, the love
of Cioti and the love of his noightsir. or rather
his neighbor's daughter, must be equally mani*
tested?the latter at any rate must not be the
one neglected.
Now. in entering <mr protest against religious
flirtation it mu<t be clearly understood, a.* we
said above, that we are treating the subject on
itr own merltt. and without any reference to the
question of priestly celibacy in the abstract,
uj>on which opinions rasy fairly differ. If a
curate wants to get married it is "no business of
ours, only do U-t him have csmiuon decency
enough to find his paitner som*'where else than
amongst the lambs of his own flock. Indeed, so
mischievous do we consider parochial love
making. that were we in the position of a rector
we would have our curates understand that any
s\ mptom of it on their part should be considered
equivalent to the delivery en ours of the ordi
nary *iv months' notice.
