new everything necessary to their success in the
sphere of labor which they had chosen, while
they practically knew nest to nothing. He en
couraged and bel| ed them in many ways, and
thusccntmamled their gratitude.
For Alice to incur a debt of gratitude was to
pay it, if at the coat of her life. Yet even the
good will of one type of man to a woman ia often
a misfortune. Her soul may be white as mow;
vet he cannot take her innocent name upon his
lips without smirching it with something of his
own vileneas. His vanity has been flattered by
idle women, till conquests become not only the
habit, but the necessity, of his morbid and mis
erable soul; till, where he knows he has not won

The Port Huron correspondent of the Detroit
Pt,tt says; "You have already been told the storjt
of the little boat loud Of children, carried from
Kock Falls to Canada .and saved In spite of storm

mother of these children, who arrived here
\estcrday morning ou board the Huron. She

like, though four were saved, she mourned
deeply tor the lost one, who, hulf clad and shir
ertng in the cold water in the bottom of the boat,
sailed away upon an unknown and measureless
sea, almost in sight of land and deliverance.
1 here were live children in this boat belonging
to Mrs. Mann, and four to the owner of the boat
who took tht :u away, making nine infant voyag
ers, who, lor three days, without food and drench
ed to the skin, floated acros Lake Huron in a
W>at which was kept trom going to the bottom by
means of an old hoot aud a shoe, which were the
only vessels for bailing that these unfortunate
travellers had on board. The mother's heart
seemed deeply touched and troubled because
no last offices and loving ministries could, in
the nature of the cas-, be paid to the little one
?how voyage of life was at once so brief and
entfaL hen these four children were put
on a tug at Kincardine, Ontario, to be returned
to their parents, it struck a rock just as it was
getting underway, and went dbwn. The chil
dren wi re rescued and sent homeward by the
cars. Thtyhaveat last reached Port Huron,
niter adventures by tiebl and flood almost equal
to Othello s, and it is hoped that they will arrive
home without fnrther accident.

human beings. A big tin pan was found in a
wagon, and the animal was milked. The bahy's

a week ago a man in Troy applied at the Mount
Ma emetery, and requested a grave to be dug,
to be ready on the following day. The instruc
tions w? re heeded, and at the appointed time
he funeral cortege arrived at the "home of the
?lead." The cori?e was contained in an elabo
rate coflln lined with white satin, on the outside
ot which was the usual inscription of birth and
(k ath. The ceremony was |>erformed, and the
mourners wended their way ho mew aril. A head
board was placed at the grave, on which ap
peared the following inscription: "Our little
aiiopted child." A day or two subsequently the
Sui?-rintendent of the Cemetery, having his
suspicion* excited, had the grave opened, and
on raising the coffin lid the body of a dog was
found calmly reposing in death. The unsenti
mental eui-eriatendent had the coffin and "our
little adopted child" pitched into the creek.
