pales on the coast. She was to leave Halifax for
Boston as soon as possible.

The Livonia Ayatn Beaten.
There was an exciting yacht race yesterday
between the English yacht Livonia and the
American vacht Dauntless for a fifty guinea
cnp. from tne Sandy Hook lightship to a stake
boat stationed twenty miles to the wiudwardard
return. The weather was very foggy and diss
freeable, but not unfavorable for sailing. At
1:49.26 a. m. the Livonia crossed the starting
line, and the Dauntless followed one minute and
one second after. The start was very Interest
ing, and the yachts kept their distance about
two hundred yards apart for nearly thirty min
utes, when they tacked. They then got a Ide
apart, and the Dauntlrss succeeded in weather
ing the Livonia, and gained on her fast till the
stake-boat was reached at 3:22.05 p. m. The
Livonia rounded 14k minutes later. Coming
back the wind veered around two points and fell
considerably. The Livonia was overhauling the
Dauntless fast, and seemed to be the winning
bo..t, when a good eleven-knot breeze sprang up
and the Dauntless traveled aw ay from her com
petitor and reached the lightship at 5:18.30
o'clock, the Livonia coming in at 0:28.32. The
artnal time of the race w as for the Dauntless,
5 h. 28 m. 3 sec., and for the Livonia, 5 h. 39 m. 6
sec. Corrected time?Dauntless, 5:40.38; Livonia.
5:46.41. The Dauntless won by 11 minutes and 3
seconds actual, or 6 minutes 3 seconds corrected
time.
Arctic Expeditions?The open Polar 8ea
reported by the Atlantic cable as having been
discovered by one of the German exploring ex
peditions, has directed attention to the different
companies of scientific men now employed In
the arduous work of reaching the highest
parallel of north latitude. It appears that at
the present time there are seven exnedifons
engaged in Arctic research?two from Germany,
under the command of Rosenthal and Payer re
spectively; one from Sweden, consisting of two
government vessels of war; one from Scotland,
under Lamont; one from England, under Leigh
Smith; one from France, fitted oat by Octave
Pavy, and the United States expedition, under
Captain Hall. The discovery of the open Polar
Sea by the German expedition brings to recol
lection the second Arctic exploration of Dr S.
K. Kane, and his perilous overland journey'fo a
point trom which he saw, In the Inaccessible dis
tance, the unfrozen waters of the circum-polar
ocean. This discovery of Dr. Kane, although
credited by many person, was not accepted as an
incontrovertible fact. The aoeuracv of his ob
servations has, however, been established by the
recent report from the German expedition.

San Francisco, Oct. 21 At Los Angelos a
fi^ht occurred in the Chinese quarter. Officer
Bildcron attempted to arrest a Chinaman for
shooting another. He was resisted, and called
on Robert Thompson, a citizen. to assist him.
The Chinese opened tire on both of them.
Thompson fell and died almost immediately.
Officer Bllderon was shot, but escaped on horse
back. A mob soon collected and attacks! the
whole Chinese quarter, and were resisted by the
Chinese. Five hundred armed men surroumded
the Chinese quarter to prevent any from es
caping. Fifteen Chinamen were hanged by the
mob, and their houses fired. The fire, however,
was extinguished.

tially restored by the authorities. No more
blooilsbed has taken place. Several Chinamen
have been arrested and are lodged In jail.

Island: and Gregg, of Texas. The report of the
committee on canons, approving the declaration
of the powers of the tederate council of the five
dioceses in the State of New York, was taken up
and adopted, Dr. Haight stating that the re|?ort
did not approve of the provision* or declaration
of lower to establish an appellate court.

Boston, Oct. 25?The body of Kate Leon,
aged 18 years, was found this morning by citi
zens who were paseing on Western avenue, be
tween Tremont and Francis streets, near Brook
line. Her head was crushed and there were evi
dences of a severe struggle and fbul murder. She
lived as a domestic with Mrs. M. A. Brown in
that neighborhood. As yet there is no cine to
the murderer.

Tax Mormon Conflict.?In the Hawkins
case in Salt Lake city yesterday morning, the
defendant asked to be released, for the mason
that the verdict was not In accordance with the
statute, as it failed to spccify the nature and
extent of the punishment. The motion was
overruled, and at the request of the counsel
sentence was deterred until Saturday next.
There is someexcitement among polygamists as
to HawkirV fate. The court |room yesterday
morning was thronged with women. Hawkins
himself is wholly unconcerned- He has been
remanded to prison at Camp Douglas. The
Mormons talk peace, provided Brigham Is not
subjected to imprisonment. They say Brigham
would submit, bat his followers would never
allow It.
