rapidly approaching completion. It will establish
another and superior line of communication between
the Ohio and Mississippi valleys and the eastern
cities; bringing ten millions of people, mainly pro
ducers, nearer to the centers of consumption in the
Eastern States, and nearer to the political aud com
mercial capitals of their country. Such is the com
manding importance of this Trunk Liue that the
larger cities of the West are projecting feeders to
connect with It, so as to avail themselves of Its un
etjualed facilities as soon as It is completed. Large
tracts of valuable coal and iron lan l* along its route
are passing into the hands of practical miners and
iron icanufacturers; a largo city is springing np at
the western terminus, the head of reliable naviga
tion on the Ohio, where it intersects 12.UU0 utiles of
river transit, and will soon be in connection with
30.UU0 miles of railroad carriage.
The Central Pacific Six Per Cent. Bo*m are
as safe for investment as Government bonds. Their
amount, fixed by act of Congress at $23.Stf,0U>, is
secured by property worth four times their value;
they can only be bought in the open market, and are
becoming scarcer in consequence of their gradual
absorption by investors here and in Europe; they
HAVE A READY MARKET IN ALL THE
PRINCIPAL MONEI -CENTERS, and have still
twenty-four rears to run; the earning* of the road
are steadily increasing, and will probably reach
$10,UKjjOOu for the current year, affording s hand
some surplus after payment of expenses aud interuat.
