of engrav ing and printing at the Treasury De
partment this morning started a subscription
list in their department, and in a little time ?770
were contributed by them. Tlie subscription

the bureau, and'the amount was soon swelled to
91,200. This was handed over to Mr. McCartee,
chief or the btrrcan, with the request that lie
would forward it to Chicago, and that gentle
man immediately telegraphed to the mayor of
Chicago to draw on him for the m&onnt. adding
a handsome worn a? his own subscription. Vjion
every occasion where substantial aid has been
needed the plate printer* have been among the
first to respond.
A National Calamity?The Secretary of
War has received two dispatches from General
Sheridan,speaking of the great havoc made by
the tire in Chicago and the large in; other of per
sons houseless and in great distress. He informed
the Secretary that he had draw n ujion the mili
tary authorities in that section for supplies to
relfeve the suffering, anil concluded one of his
telegram* by saying the fire mipht jus Iv be

earnest sympathy ot the entire country. Secre

tire the Secretary of War has extended the time
of paj went of purchasers at the sale of quarter

period of twenty days.
A Triple Bigamist?Rol>ert Chambers, a
Canadian, has been arretted at Bayoune. New
Jersey, on a charge of bigamy. He has kept a
saloon in Bavonne since 1*?H!, coming there from
New York State and bringing with him a wife.
Some time ago his first wife, whom he married
in 1832. and who is now nearly eighty years old,
came to New Jersey hoping to make him recog
nize her, and, falling in this, she has had him
arrested. He deserted her in 1H48, twenty-three
vears ago, and went to Neva Scotia where he
married another woman hv whom he had two
children. She. however, died in 1854, when he
married his third wife, with whom he has since
lived and bad four children. By bis lawful wife
he had three children, making sixteen In all.
Most of them are, of course, grown up, and twe
or three of his <ir?t wifiels children have visited
him for the purpo^ of persuading him to return
to her. but withoat effect. Chambers does not
deny the crime, and seems indifferent to the re
sutt.

Board, and to dispose of such applications as
may need immediate attention; he shall sign al
orders cf the Board; and submit at each session
tin reof an ab-tract of all business transacted by
him since the i<rec ding meeting. It shall also
be his duty to have all papers properly briefed
and prepared for consideration by the lioard,
and generally to arrange its business in proper
shape; for action; he shall see that the reports o.
the ditl'erent officers are promptly made, and
orders to them shall be issued through him. He
shall require that tiie various officers properly
perform their respective duties, and may dis
miss any employee of the Board, subject to its
approval.
All requisitions for work or material must be
approved by him, said requisitions to epeciiV

ties as may trnm time to time be required of hiin
by the Board.
Ordered, That the assessment, collection, and
disbursement of all monies of tiie Board shall be
under the direction of the Treasurer thereof, and
that his bond shall be fifty thousand dollars. He
shall present at each session of the Board a re
port of his receipts and disbursements.
Ordered. That the Consulting Engineer shall
confer and advise with the Engineer of the lioard
respecting all proposed improvements, and shall
examine all plans of said Engineer, and report
them to the Board with such recommendations
as he may deem necessary.
Ordered, That the Secretary shall, under the
immediate direction of the Executive Officer,
keep the records, and have custody of all the
papers of the Board, and perform such other
duties as mnv be assigned him.
Ordered. That it shall be the duty ol the En
gineer, subject to the approval of the Board, to
establish all grades and levels; to prepare plans
and spec ideations lor street", avenues, bridges,
sewers, and other improvements, and to measure
all work performed under contract. No bills
shall be paid for any work unless on his certifi
cate that it has bee:n done in conformity with
the conditions of tbe contract, and that the ma
terial or laK'r has been expended in accordance
with the order therefor. No measurements
shall be made by lnui except ti|H>n the written
order ot the Board or of its executive officer,
which measurements shall be furnisheddirect

evidence of work done shall be furnished by him
to any other party whatever. He shall not give

consist of the Governor, S.I*. Brown, and A. B.
Mullett; and that all bills shall be transmitted
to them by the Auditor of the Board; they shall
then examine said bills, and, if approved, shall
refer them to the Treasurer for settle
ment. No bill shall be paid without having re
ceived the approval of a majority of the Finance
Committee.
Ordered. That the Auditor shall audit all 'bills
acainst the Board, which shall in e\ery case be
in duplicate, and embody satistactorv evidence

propriation, or against more than one specific

for the erection, repair, extension, and removal

followed poeaibly by rain to-night or Wednesdav
morning. No material change la indicated for the
Southern and Oalf coasts. Clearing and cold
weather from Arkansas to Indiana this afternoon.
Brisk southwest winds will probably sxtend over
the lower lskes during the day, with heavier winds
on Lake Huron.

in the city, except two saving* institutions on
22d street, in the South Division, and one on
Randolph street, in the West Division, are de
stroyed. All ihe who'esale stores, all the retail
establishm< uts, tlie |x#t office, the court-house,
the Chamber of Commerce, every hotel in the
South Division, were consumed, except the
Michigan Avenue Hotel, which i? standing on
the extreme southern burnt section, which
escaped, though badly scorched. Every news
paper office, including the Tribunr building,
w hich was supposed to b:" Are-proof, finally suc
cumbed. Every theater, six ot the largest ele
vators, the immense depot* of tlie Michigan
Southern and Illinois Central railroad, Isith the
passenger and freight debits of the latt *r. mon

It was thought last evening in Chicago tliat
-cores of men, women and children fell victim*
to the tiames. Hundreds of horses and cows
were burned in stables, and on the north side a
number ot an nirUs. though released from con
finement, were so bewildered and confused By
the sen of fire which surrounded them, that they
rushed wildly to and fro uttering cries of fright
and pain until scorched and killed. Any at
tempt at the description of the scenes of appall
ing calamity would l?e idle. As the awful day
drew to a close, thousands of anxious eves
w atched the clouds of smoke which rolled over
the burnt district with evident dread that a sud
den change 01 w ind might turn the tiames on
other jiortlons of the city.
The Telegraph Operator* Again
Obliged to Flee.
A dispatch from New York, dated midnight,
brought the intelligence that the telegraph ot
tiee. improvised in the southern part of Chicago,
as it was supposed beyond tlie reach of the
flames. had been abandoned, and that comiuu
cation with the city was again su>|>eii.|cd. It
was expected another office would be opened
"luring the night two miles south of the last
place of refuge. The O)>erators, before leaving
their instruments, reported that the wind had
veered to the north, and was driving the tiames
back ami southward. The fire had already
reached the neighborhood of the offi ct. and the
men were compiled to flee. Their last words
were There now appears no hope of saving
the southern portion of the city."
The Hames Temporarily ArreMed.
A dispatch trom Chicago, dated 0 p. lu., said
the ilauies weie arrested about 1 o'clock vester
day afternoon. It w as accomplished by blowing
up and completely demolishing scveralbuildiiigs
on Waltash avenue and Congress street, bv Lieu
tenant General Sheridan. The district burned
over in the south division embraced everything
from the main branch of the Chicago ri ver hi
the lake, ami covering about oue hundred
blocks.
The Burnt District.
This district contained all the leading business
houses, banks, insurance offices, hotels, Jfcc.;
also, a lar^re number of churches, including St.
Mary's, Trinity. First Presbyterian, Second
Presbyterian. St. Paul's, Swedenborgian, Jtc.
The Methodist Church on the corner of Wabash
avenue and Congress street is saved. It i? said
the Michigan Avenue Hotel, on the corner of
Michigan avenue and Congress street, and Con
gress Hall, immediately adjoining it, are sjved
The residences of Governor Bross. Hon. John
Young Scallou, L. C. Triggs, Peter Ross and
other leading citizens are completely d< stroyed.
All the newspa|ier offices are completely wiped
out. The Tribune building resisted the fire for
several hours, hut filially yielded, when Mc
Vicker's Theater, immediately adjoining, which
also withstood the raging element, finally suc
cumbed. Intact, all the buildings in tlie dis
trict which claimed to be fireproof sharod the
tate of those which could make no such claims.
All the railroad depots were burned. Almost
the entire northern division, from the main
branch of the Chicago river to Lincoln Park, is
completely destroyed. Including the water works*
a number of elegant churches. &c. This district
embraced almost the entire business part of the
city. For miles ami miles in everv direction the
sidewalks, lawns, vacant lots arid tront yard
were filled with jieople who escai>ed frorii the
burning houses, taking with them only a scanty
amount of furniture and clothing.
Yesterday evening it was estimated that the
total loss would reach
One Hundred and Fifty Millions.
Put a traction of this amountcan be recovered
from the insurance. General Sheridan tele
graphed to St. Louis, to the MistJiuri depot, to
send at once one hundred thousand rations. He
also telegraphed to Omaha tor two companies of
soldiers and one hundred tents. He will also
order another hundred thousand rations. It was
thought late last night that the loss of life had
been greatly exaggerated, as no casualties had
been received.
The Fire Krenhw Out Again.
A dispatch received this morning f rom Xew
oik, at 4 o'clock, states that a service dispatch
was sent from the Western Union telegraph
office at Puflalo. at 11 p. ni to the general oflice
of the company in New York, stating that the
follow ing had been received f rom Chicago ?with
no time given:
1 he fire is rapidly spreading. The telegraph
company has been driven from its temi*>rarv
ttice. The whole citv is doomed. The wind
lias changed, and is blow ing the tire in all direc
tions."

It is estimated from the weekly refiort of the
giain market of Chicago, made up on Satur
day evening last, that the amount on hand,
Stored in the several elevators, all of which are
rejiorted to have been destroyed, was eleven
million bushels, altout lialfof which were wheat
aid rye, and the balance corn and oats. Here
one species ot loss that will probably come up to
twelve million dollars in value.

A ni:iss meeting was held in Cincinnati yes
terday, at which ?25,000 was subscribed, the
citv pledges yiW.fKiO. Nearly all the railroad
lines in the country have offered to transport all
supplies free of charge. In New York the ex
citement was so grt?t that business was almost
entirely suspended. The Chamber of Com
merce and other bodies meet to-day to take
stejis to give immediate relief to the'sufferers.
The Baltimore Citv Council met yesterday after,
noon, and authorized the Mayor to telegraph
the Mayor of Chicago proffering aid. The Oswe
go Board of Trade has contributed ?2,000 A
yp4eial meeting of the Philadelphia Commercial
Exchange was held yesterday, and a dispatch
offering aid was forwarded to the Mayor of
Chicago. The maas meeting at noon in 8t. Louis
was the largest ever held in that city. ?70,000 was
hour, the Merchant's Exchange
giving *10,000. Beside these meetings were held
