that fully one-half of the population of the
towns. Tillages and cities of the South l com

of the "nation's wards" as cotton -grower.
Before the war six bales of cotton to 'the
nana" was an extraordinary crop, and ther
la no cotton-planter now, no one who Is at all
fam liar with free negro labor, who will not
pronounce it at least one-third leas valuble

lands would be cultivated by white men, and

accounted for In part by the severe wealber,
which. It is feared, proved general throughout
the cotton legion. Short crop men are Jubi
lant, and the majority are fast settling down
to the belief that the total will not exceed
