MEETING OF THE BOARD OF ALDERMEN—PRECAU
TIONS AGAINST SMALL-POX THE PUBLIC
MARKET PROJECT.
The Brooklyn Board of Aldermen held an
adjourned meeting, yesterday, Jacob IL Bergen in the
chair. A communication was received from Mayor
Kalfieiach stating! that he withheld his signature from
the resolution of the Board awarding the contract for
grading and paving Ferris-st., property owners having
petitioned that an investigation might be made on the
ground that the contract price was exorbitant, and that
the street had never been opened. The matter was re
ferred to the Grading and Paving Committee.
A communication was received from the Mayor, the
Health Officer, and the Presiding Officer of the Kings
County Medical Society, stating that in their judgment
there is danger of small-pox becoming epidemic in the
city; that extraordinary means should be taken to pre
vent its increase, and that $10,000 was required. The
Committes offered the following, which were adopted:
Resolved, That the financial officers of the city be directed to procure
by loan. on the credit of the city, $10,000, to p*y expenses necessarily
incurred in the protection of the health of the city from small-pox.
Resolved, That proper certificates of indebteduvess, to secure the
amount so procured, be issued by the Mayor, Controller, and City Clerk.
The Committee on the proposed public market foncd
that there was not a proper public market in this city,
and that its inhabitants depended pon the markets of
its neighboring city for the supply of almost all articles
of farm and garden produce. The farmers of Jond
Island themselves appeal to the city for action that wil
restore the market conveniences which the city origin
“ally enjoyed, and which there has been a neglect on the
part of, its authomties to maintain. The Committee
XT es the establishment of a public market. The site
“which is the most desirable and available for the pro
posed market is the low laud, bounded on the
‘north by the Wallabout Canal and Bay, on the
south cide by Flushing-ave., on the east side by Ryer
son-st., if extended to meet the water front, and on the
west by Washington-ave, A reference to the map of the
city demonstrates that no more central situation with a
water front, could be secured. It is easily accessible to
the Reople of the Eastern and Western Districts alike, hy
leading streets aud avenues, and by horse-railroads.
From mam avenues leading from the eountry there is
convenient access, The Routh Side Railroad, by avery
trifling change of route, could meee its terminus at (UiR
point, and vl accommodate the farmers and market
gardeners of the extensive scction Hifongn which it
passes. There is a water front on the canal of not less
than 500 feet, now the property of the city, which caudal
‘could be increased 2,600 feet by extending the can:
north and south to Flushing-ave. Tue locality is now a
swamp, offensive to sight and smell, forming most ob
Jjectiouable yuisance, aud deterring the improveucnt of
the neighborhood. The Comittee offered the fol

jzed to confer. in behalf of the City of Brooklvn. with the United Stats

sion of the properts in question, and that thes report the result of such

and Water Rights offered the following:
Whereas, All efforts to arrive at an amicable determination of the
rights of the city to the property in Water and Folton-ste, the possession
of which Las been usorped by the Union Ferry Company. have proved
unavailing. the sald Perry Company neglecting every otter of the hind ou
the part of the city: therefore,
Resolved That the Corporation Connsel be directed to prosecute the
necessary litigation to eet. hsl and maintain the rights of the city to
the property which the Uwon Ferry Company Lave unwarrantably
seized upon as part of the site for the erection of 4 new finu-bouse at
the Fultou Ferry.
Alderman Richardson explained that Cvrns P. Smith,
Managing Director of the Ferry Company, was confined
to his restdence by fickness, and that the Company was

The examination otf Bank Examiner Callen
dar, charged with receiving a bribe of $76,000 trom the
Ocean National Bank, and making false returns of its
condition, was begun at the bank in question, yesterday
afternoon, before Commissioner Osborn, though one of
the morning newspapers makes the curious assertion
that it began on Tuesday, and will continue so to do
from time to time till the necessity ceases,’ Columbus

which we paid him $100; he made a written statement to
