of Breslau has satisfactorily sown that in certain cases
plants die in freezing and not in thawing. The white
Sowers of some orchids change in color upon a chemical
on which takes place on the death of the parts.

way destroyed, they turn blue immediately. Cold may
produce a similar result. These fiowers turn blue at once
on freezing, showing that life has departed.
OX TE DESCENT OF GLACIER. —Henry Mose
ley. Ganon of Bristol, continues in The Philosophical
Magazine for August the discussion on the cause of the
descent of glaciers. He opposes the generally received
theory, the object of his various memoirs being to show,
1st, the mechanical impossibility of the descent of Sa
elers by their weight alone; 2d, (he actual cause of their
descent to be their dilatation and contraction by altera
tions of temperature, in addition to their weight.
Licntsing.—The concentration of power in
a stroke of lightning, acting through an inconceivably
mall interval of time, may perhaps be realized after ex
amining ite work of destruction, yet its inductive action
on the earth's surface {a not less wonderful. Prof. A. M.
Mayer wade an experiment, some time since, which
demo.istyated the extent of this action. Ife connected
the wire of a galvanometer with the water-pipes of Balti
more, Md., and joined the other end of the coll to a gas
pipe of a house in the sonth-western part of the city. Thus
a vast metallic system of elecirie nerves stretched three
miles toward the nortli-west, to the reservoir, and about
as many miles to the cast and south-east, over the city.
A thunderstorm was raging at the tie in the north, at
so great a distance that ouly the illumination of the
elouds told when a flush occurred. Yet whenever that
flush took Jiace, the needle of the galvanometer was in
atantly deflected through ten or twenty degrees, 80
nearly shnwltaneous were the two occurrences that no
difference in the instant of their wanifestation could be
dotectod. Shutiing himself up ine dark room contajn
fug the galvanometer, he signaled, wheuever the needle
moved, to an obzerver of the storm, who also gave a Rig
nal wherever a flash occurred: and the exchange of
slguals was always found to be simultaneous, It was as
certained on the following day that the storm was more
shan twelve miles distant, thus showing that over 5&0
equare wiies of the carth’s surface were ailfected at each
flash of the lightning.

The money market was active during the morning at
seven per cent gold, to which in some cases a small com

[30 DENOMINATIONS OF £1,000, 8500 AND $100, can
now be had from the undersigned or through the
principal banks and bankers of the United States.
The attention of investors is invited to the merits of
these Bonds, secured by a first and only mortgage on
the road, equipments, franchises and property of a
trunk line of railroad which will shorten the distance
between New-York and Sao Francisco some 230 miles,
and in addition the mortgage to secure the Bonds
covers a land grant of 1,500,000 acres of the most fer
tile land in the West, which is prohibited from being
sold at less than four (84) dollars per acre by the
terms of the mortgage deed, and according to the
present market price of the Illinois Central Compa
ny’s lands is worth $18,750,000. This loan was origi
nally for 85,500,000, but has been largely reduced by
subscriptions of actual investors. The remaining
balance of the loan is offered at 974 and accrued in
terest, but the right is reserved to advance the price
