From facts which have become known sinee the Presi
deut returned from his Eastern trip, there can be little
doubt that Mr. Those. Murphy will soon retire from the
Collectorship of the Port of New-York. The President,
while in Baltiwore, abont a fortnight since, stated that
he did not consider THE TRIBUNE'S publications concern
ing the Collector as any reason for removing him from
office: hat that, if he had not vot been faithful as a Col
ctor, if he had been dirhonest as a public officer, be
would remove him when the facts were established. The
change, it i» said, will occur early next month, and will
not be in the forw of a removal, but a resignation.”

Judging from the August reports of distillers, it ap
pears that the mavufacturers nounected with the Dis
tillers Association, although organized only about four
mnths, have monopolized over two-thirds of the busi

The Post Office Department, to-day, ordered the con

adel American ~teaw-Packet Company, commencing Nov.
1. This will aflord, for the fist time, a regular direct

ws postage by this route will be ten cents per half
ounce, material deduction from present rates, as letters
for Spain are now sent through Belgium or England, at
the dhgie rate of 16 cents per one-third ounce.

office, yesterday morning, in consequence of the appear
ance of the article on Bogus Diplomas,” further in
quires coucerning the Medical College involved, and
Prof. Willian H. Bowlsby, were immediately instituted.
It was found that out of the list of the 18 Professors of
the Eclectic Medical College of Philadelphia, five names
appear in connection with the Brooklyn Eclectic Dis
pensary—Matthew Hale Bmith, W. H. Bowlsby‘ J. Bu
chanan, 1. Isaacs, and Joseph Sites (Dean of the Faculty).
W. H. Bowlsby's name appears on the prospectus of this
institution, officially advertised in The Eecleclic Medical
Journal of Pennsyleania—the journal of the “infamous
College "—as House-8urgeon and Medical Buperintend
ent.” 1t will be remembered that Dr. Bowlsby keeps a
third-rate drug store on Myrtle-ave., Brooklyn, and that
Jacob Rosenzweig says he has a diploma from the
Eclectic Medicah College of Philadelphia. Under
the heading of General Practice,” in the same adver
tisewent, is the name, among many others, of J. Rosenz
welg. The information given to THE TRIBUNE is to the
effect that Dr. W. H. Bowlsbey of Myrtle-ave., Brooklyn,
1s u relative of Alice Augusta Bowlsbey, and that he has
had till lately some sort of a puttoeranip with Jacob
Resenzwelg, who is accused of ving caused her death
through medical malpractice. Whether this be true or
not, it 1s impossible to say. Of Rosenzweig the readers
of THE TRIBUNE know more than enough. Of Dr. Wm.
H. Bowlsbey of Myrtle-ave., Brooklyn, they will learn

Mary Ann Cunningham, age 107, was locked
up yesterday, by the Third Ward Police, for disorderly
conduct.
The condition of the cobble-stone pavement
in Twenty-ninth-st., between Sixth and Eighth-aves., is a
disgrace to the city.
The Boulevard or Grand Drive passes through
the center of Trinity Cemetery. An ornamental iron
bridge will reéstublish the connection.
A ragged urchin asked a gentleman in Broad
way yesterday to tell him the time, and, on seeing the
watch, attempted to seize it, but only succeeded in
breaking the guard. A confederate seized the gentle
man by the shoulders and detained him with bland in
quiries until the thief had escaped.
The passenger trains of the Hudson River
Railway, with the exception of the Youkers special, will
run on and after Monday next, Oct. 80, to and from the
Grand Central Depot, at Forty-second-st., and Fourth
ave. The entrance for Rustengers is on Ceutral-ave., be
tween Forty-third and Forty-fourth-at.
One of the liveliest of city sights is the
unloading of express wagons into the cellars of the great
express offices on Broadway. The airy manner in which
heavy boxes and bales are sen’, spinning down the iron

the high bluffs,
The most dangerous firing witnessed in this
city since the Eighth-ave. riot was that of the sky-rockets
discharged in front of Cooper Institute, last night. They
were wet or somebody blundered, and consequently a
number of them were shot jong the ground through the
crowd, or came down prematurely and exploded vear the
Mercantile Library.
The motion, which was to have been made
in the Fisk-Stokes case, yesterday, to ret aside the awards
of arbitrators, to whom the whole matter in dispute he
tween Fisk and Stokes had been referred, was withdrawn,
on the ground that all the questions which could be
heard on the motion would come up in auotuer ruit iu
stituted by Fisk in Brooklyn.

wich-st., above Rector, have for years presented an fm

The present condition of the Quarantine
Station is such as to call for Immediate action. Bhould
there be an arrival of several large immigrant vessels
with contagious diseases on board, Hi youd be a difficult
matter to provide decent accomm ations. Although
the appropriation has been wade for the construction of
the new Quarantine Station, still the officers in charge
seem to maintain a very censurabie inactivity.
An autograph collector of this city, knowing
the lively antipathy of Oliver Wendell Holmés to crea
tures of his class, and wishing to capture a specimen of
the metaphysician’s chirograpby, adopted the heartless
subterfuge of asking by letter: Which do you think
the best dictionary—Webster's or Worcester's "'—a ques:
tion which he believed Holmes's courtesy would compel
Lim to answer. The return mail brought a single sheet
of note paper, on which was neatly pasted the one word,
clipped from the writer's own letter, Webster's.”
An auction sale of 100,000 tuns of Scranton
coal took place yesterday, the prices being considerably

Prof. P. H. Vanderweyde will lecture before
the Polytechnic Branch of the American Institute this
evening, on the so-called Psychic force which has at.
tracted much attention in England within the last few
weeks.
The National Insurance Convention contin
ued the debate, yesterday, upon the report of the Com
mittee on Taxation. The following recommendation in
particular was under discussion turoughout the entire
dav:
That the nniform rate of taxation he one per cent on gross premiams of
fire companies, and one half per cect on gross premiums of marine com:
panies and that life companies be assessed one-half per cent on every form

The 22d annual meeting of the American
Bible Union, began yesterday at the Baptist Mariners’
Church, the Rev. Dr. Armitage presiding, The Treasur
er's annual report showed Total expenditure, $56,018 92;
receipts, $53,684 46; balance due to the Treasurer, $2,
334 47. The principal items were: Revikion of the En
glish Seriptures, $6,824 71; grants and donations, $1,936 35;

A STRANGE MURDER AT PORT MORRIS, N. J
A cold-blooded murder was committed a
Port Morris, N. J., yesterday morning. Two men, Burns
and Murray, went into the dram-shop of William
Grinder, and Murray came out in a few woments with a
quart of whisky, followed by John Pingerton, a hoy,
who had a pistol in his hand and threatened to shoot
Murray if he did not return the whisky. The boy's
mother, who was standing near, took the pistol from him
and handed it to the landlord, Grinder, who approached
Hiram D. Foster and shot him. He died in about 30
prises, He then fired on John Burns, the ball lodging
in hid arm. The men had quarreled the night helors
about the paywent of 75 cents, and that is the only cause
which ean be assigned for the decd. Grinder and Pine
verton were lodeed in the Morris County Jail.

poor, do good and distribute, forgettiug not that with
such sacrifice God is well pleased.

meeting of the Directors of the Philadelphia and Trenton
Railroad Company was held to take action upon the
creat railroad lease, that codes the Companied of New
Jersey to the Pennsylvania Central. Mr. W. H. Gatze
mer, President pro tem, presided, and all the directors,
excepting Mr. Bradford and Judge Read, were present.
A letter was received frow the latter, stating his entire
assent to the provisions of the lease. The meeting, after
some discussion, resolved that Mr. Gatzemer be author
ized to execute the lease upon the assent of a majority
of the stockholders being obtained for that purpose. A
IOSHNE 18 to be held at the office of the Compuny on the
11th of November. This is a virtual execution of the
lease, it being morally certain that assent will be ob
