dred and seventy thousand inhabitants, was

yy Mrs. Barry, of the Boston Children’s
has been assjduous in works of
benevolence during the past year. In that
time she is said to have made fifteen hun
dred and sixty*one visits to the poor, to
have lined and trimmed one hundred hats
and bonnets, to have cut out five hundred
and fifty-one garments, and to have made
two visits to another State, where she fonnd
homes for nineteen destitute children.

Saturday, Oct. 14.
Mary Sprague and Mary Holmes, common
drunkards, were sent to the State Farm for
six months apiece.
Sunday, Oct. 15.
Wm. Weeden, for theft of a pair of pants from
John Drugan, was sent to Jail for ninety days.
Joseph Manchester, adjudged a common
drunkard, was sent to the State Farm for six
months.
The case of Wm. McGraw, charged with an
assault on Christian Hoch, was continued
to Wednesday next.

Saturday, Oct. 14.
Charles Morris, for revelling, was fined SIG
and costs, and John Convey (2 and costs.
For drunkenness. Daniel Doyle, Michael
Collins, and Patrick Mowry, were fined »2 and
costs each: Ellen West, Charles Henderson,
Samuel Godfrey. Joseph B. Cann, John Mc-
Elroy, John Byran, and Charles Dnffee $3 and
costa each; Mary Holmes SS and costs.
SATURDAY, Oct. 15.
John Lvons was fitted 85 and costs for revell
»g, and John McDermott for the same offence
0 and costs.
Margaret Sheridan was fined 95 and costs for
drunkenness, and was also adjudged a com
mon drunkard and sentenced to six months at
the State Farm.

fined $3 and costs, and Charlo* Welden, Pat

Ward, John Sulllvar and Sarah Jane Brown,
$2 and costs, all for drunkenness.
Aid for Chicago.—The funds tor Chicago,
collected in this city thus far, in aid of the suf
fering in Chicago, is six thousand dollars.
This is independent of the three thousand dol
lars voted by the City Council and contribu
tions In clothing, Ac., and the work has only
just begun.
Bold Theft.—One or two evenings since a
couple of well dressed females entered the mil
linory store of Miss Hannah McWheeler, 224
Thames street, and while pretending to look at
some ribbons and chighons, possessed them
selves of a portmonnaie containing a consider
able sum of money, which had been left tor a
moment on the show case, and departed with
out making any purchase. They can be iden
tilled by Miss wheeler, and will find an adver
tisement in another column which they will do
well to heed.
TEMPERANCE ENTERTAINMENT AT FORT
Adams.—The pledged men attached to the 5.h
U. 8. Artillery at Fort Adams, about thirty in
number, gave an entertainment at the Fort,
last evening, to which members of Union Tem
ple of Honor, Atlantic Division, Sons of Tem
perance, Eureka Lodge of Good Templars, and
other temperance people from the city, num
bering in all some seventy-five ladies and gen
tlemen were invited.

In which the entertainment waa riven, the
Poet school room, a room about 20 by 70 feet,
was profusely and elaborately decorated.
The two immense Post flags cover*
ed the entire celling overhead, while
others adorned the wall on one side, and
the nine windows on the opposite wall were
ornamented with crossed swords and muskets,
beautifully festooned with evergreens. At the
entrance to the ball outside, was a large trans-

was displayed in large letters, tastefully ar
ranged, welcome, Friends oi Temperance,**
I while in front of the orchestra, where also was
displayed the elegant guidon of Battdry A,

In a wreath of evergreens. The hall was bril
liantly lighted with lanterns and candles.—
Every facility was afforded the committee by
Col. Dupont and his subordinate officers, in
arranging for this entertainment, by loaning
them the necessary material lor the occasion.
THE ARRANGEMENTS
for the evening comprised some twenty dances,
Interspersed with three songs by Prof. Augus
tus French, and Mrs. Sherman and Mrs. Wood,
of Newport, in quartette, In which they were
rapturously applauded. In the Intermission
the company repaired to another room, whore
two long tables were spread with edibles of the
most tempting and appetising nature, flanked
with the most delicious lemonade and steam
ing refreshing coffee. After the removal of the
cloth, speeches were made by Corporal Kent,of
Battery B, and B. W. Pearce, of Union Temple
•f Honor.

attended this their first social gathering, and
Col. Du Pont and his subordinates may also
congratulate themselves In having so fine a
body of men attached to their regiment. May
their number never do less.
