MIDDLESEX COUNTY.
Some thieves broke into a barn on the corner
of Bock and Willis streets, Lowell, on I aesday,
and alter forcing open a peddler’s helped
themselves to 1400 cigars and a piod stock of
candles, the property of Eben Bray. On a
search the next niornimr Deputy Marshal
Bowles discovered aiamt 900 of the stolen cigais
under the Suffolk canal foot bridge. Xo arrests.
The last small pox patient at the Lowell city
hospital was discharged on Wednesday morn
ing and the building has undergone a thorough
fumigation. Since the organization ot the new
botud Sept. IS, 221 cases of varioloid and small
pox were reported. The greatest number of
patients at the hospital at onetime was 108. Ihe
last case was reported on the 24th ult. I'he
board of health has finished a good work, for
which all are thankful.
On Mondav, Francis Kemp, a youth ol tour
teen years, entered the house of Mrs. Hogan, on
Market struct, Lowell, while the family was ab
sent, and abstracted W 0 from a trunk. He met
his chum. Patrick Shay, of about the same age,
and divided. After buying sonic clothing they
visited Boston and returned the next morning.
Shav repented, went to Mrs. Hogan and con
fessed, and both boys were arrested. Knapp was
at the Northern depot waiting for a train north.
Thirtv dollars were recovered.
ESSEX COUNTY.
The Boardman shoe factory at Danvers was
sold last week to parties in Beverly, by auction,
for $6700.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Fams, m Beverly, cele
brated their golden wedding on Saturday last.
BRISTOL COUNTY.
The annual meeting of the stockholders of the
New Bedford and Taunton railroad was held on
Mondav. Tbeold board of directors was unani
mously rc-clected; and at a subsequent meeting
of the directors, Hon. Joseph Grinnell was re
chosen president, and Lawrence Grinnell treas
urer. The former has tilled the presidency for
thirty-three vears, and the latter Ims been treas
urer for twenty-six years. The gross receipts
of the corporation have been $262,221.22; total
expenses, $219,945.97; net earnings, 542,278.25.
There has been expended during the year, for
new locomotives, $16,000; new passenger and
baggage cars, $8.044.27; new freight cars, $7,-
839 8L During the year 308 tons of new rails
have been laid at a cost, lessjold rails sold, of
$10,075.88. Side tracks have btm laid to the
length of 4861 feet, at a cost of $2,088.06. Num
ber of passengers carried in cars, .325,136.
HAMPDEN COUNTY.
Postmaster Stowe, of Springfield, died at two
o'clock this morning.
The eastern Hampden agricultural society, at
its annual meeting at Palmer on Monday, ap
pointed a committee to sell the whole or a part
of the trotting paik in that town to liquidate
the society’s debt, the same committee to secure
a new place for the cattle shows. The society
elected these officers: President J. S. Blair of
Brimfield; vice presidents, .Lunes G. Alden ol
Palmer and O. M. Graves of Monson; directors,
Horace Wallace, Jr., of Holland, William Ses
sions of Wilbraham, Arthur Norcross, O. 11.
Carpenter and William Tucker of Monson, Jas.
Gamwell and E. B. Gates of Palmer, Horace
Perry of Belchertown; secretary and treasurer,
George Robiusun.
MAINE.
G. Reynold's house, at Kendall’s mills, was
entirely bn med on Saturday night. The prop
erty was insured.
Twenty-two intentions of marriage were re
corded in the city clerk’s office at Bangor last
it onth.
The Penobscot river, which froze over on the
89th of November, has not closed so early sine*
1844, when it closed on the 27th. Last year it
closed Dec. 21st.
A smoking car, forming part of the Maine
Central train for Bangor, Saturday evening,
took fire around the stove funnel, and the roof
was considerably injured before the flames were
extinguished.
The Lewiston institute for savings has about
$960,000 on deposit, having gained about $150,-
000 in its deposits the past year. There are about
three thousand depositors, indicating to how
large an extent the deposits are made by labor
ing men of small means.
The taking of eggs from the salmon at Orland
has been attended with a remarkable degree of
success, and above seventy thousand good eggs
are now on hand—a greater number, probably,
of artificially fecundated eggs than have ever
before been in New England at one time.
J. Kendrick, formerly superintendent of the
Concord railroad and recently in charge of a
southern road, and who was offered the superin
tendency of the Maine Central road, has declined
the oiler, having accepted a similar position with
one of the leading Massachusetts roads. No
one is yet selected for the Maine Central super
intendency.
Notice is given of a petition for a railroad
chatter from some point at or near the northern
terminus of the Georges valley railroad, to a
point upon either the Maine Central or Euro
pean and North American railroads, in the town
of Hampton; said road to be located through
the town of Belfast, Waldo, Swanville, Monroe,
Newburg, or Winterport, and Hampden.
Tl.v Maine Central railroad company have
finally purchased (he residence ami lot belong
ing to Prof. Smith of Waterville, opposite Col
ony university,together with the heater lot north
of it, and, after removing the house, will erect
on the land a handsome union depot. It is at
this point where the two roads form a junction.
The purchase was made after a satisfactory con
ference with a special committee of the trustees
and faculty of thouniversity, which institution
has been promised in writing that no other
building besides the depot shall be built in front
of the university, and that the track of the old
Portland and Kennebec road in the rear of (It
college grounds shall be removed, after which
the land is to be graded and terraced to the
river.
A few days alO Cyrus Woodman, of Cam
bridge, and <l. W. Tborntun, of Boston, accom
panied by several memtiers of the York insti
tute, went to the Pool in search of the remains
of Fort Mary. Fort Hill is the spot that once
knew this election. The fort was built in 1704,
and was in a position to protect the settlers from
attacks by land and sea. The remains of the
walls are now visible, showing ttie tort to have
been about sixty feet square. Near this locality
is the oldest house in Biddeford. It was built
about 208 years ago by Tristram Jordan, and is
now owned and occupied by Tristrain Gold
thwaite. An attempt was made to find the lo
cality of the old court house, which was situated
near “the head of the Pool," but the “sarchiug"
wind and setting sun drove the party home.
General court holdcn in the province of Maine
was in Saco in 1640, and probably somewhere
at the Pool, as the first settlement was in that
locality.
NEW HAMPSHIRE.
The Catholic chur?h in Laconia was set on
fire on Monday night, but the flames were dis
covered in season to pievent much damage.
Pitch pine kindlings were placed inside a win
dow blind and set on lire.
Hiram A. Wood, superintendent of the public
sehooL in Nashua, attempted suicide Monday
night by cutting his throot, alter which he
leaped from the window of his boarding house
on Auburn street, breaking his leg and hip. lie
lies in a critical Mr. Wood lias be n
suffering an aberration of mind for several
days past, and has appeared strange at times
for the last five years, probably the result of
too close application to his studies.
Dr. Oliver Dean of Manchester died on the
sth, aged eighty-nine years. He has been con
nected with the manufacturing interests of
Manchester from their beginning, and until his
resignation recently was president of the Man
chester print works and other corporations in
Manchester. He was the founder of the Dean
academy at Franklin, which he has handsomch
endowed.
VERMONT.
Mr. Newell Stocker of Danville, has sent to
the Boston market during the summer and fall
2000 sheep and lambs.
Good working oxen are selling for about five
dollars per cwt. in Whitingham, the best pairs
for about six dollars per cwt.
Widow Stratton of Woodford, dug up a two
dollar and a half gold piece in the dour yard a
few days since. How it came there is a querv
but Mrs. Stratton thinks there is more coin’
somewhere in the adjacent grounds.
John Bartlett disappeared from Norwich in
May, 1870, and nothing has since been heard of
him. He is seventy-three years old, thick set
about five feet ten inches high, ami is believed
to lie insane. Any information concerning him
will greatly oblige his friends.
The Portland Herald says: “Barney Gallup of
West Halifax, formerly stage driver on the
Brattleboro ami North Adams route, was found
dead on Wednesday morning, near Jackson
ville. Whether he was actually frozen to death,
as rumor has it, or died from disease, we are as
yet unable to learn?'
The Irasborgh library association now owns
between one ami two hundred volumes of the
best standaid works of history, science and fic
tion. It is purely a private affair, the object of
which is to supply its members with the best
literature, which many du not feel able to phre
ujrnn the shelves of their own library.

The supreme court has just rendered a de
cision in the case of George Nev man treas
urer of the town of Brattleljorough against S.
M. Waite, cashier of the First national bank of
Brattleborough, to recover.penalty for refusimr
to make return of stockholders to the town
clerk. The case came before the county court
and was decided in favor of the bank,’ on the
ground of limitation of statute. A demurrer
was entered ami the case carried to the su
preme court, where the demurrer was sustained
and a verdict rendered in favor of plaintiff.
Seth lord plowed up in Caledonia county, re
cently, the skeleton of a man near the railroad
track. Not a vestige of clothing was found, fhc
exciting question now is, “Who is it, and how
came it there?" Some think it may Ik- one of
Kogers men, who passed down this valky over
one hundred years ago. The skeleton is in the
possession of Dr. Hazleton.
A sy u wunty was organized, a jail
bn lit of elm logs was erected in Guildhall just
last of where B. P, Cobb Jives. In 1808
it wak built on the site where It now standi
This soeuud building was put up two-foot
square timbers, and, a* some claim, was a safer
jail than the present. Tins stood till 1833 when
it was torn down and a two-story brick building
put up in its stead. This was burned in 1864,
as i< supposed, by Moses Bacon, who was con
fined there al the time. For the next two years
the jails in Caledonia and Orleans counties
wore used by Essex county, and in 1806 the
present jail was erected.
CONNECTICUT.
At the election in Norwalk, Monday, the en
tire republican ticket was elected.
The New Haven woman suffrage association
formal lv announces that it does not fight mit
Woodhull.
Upon the arrival of the Grand Duke Alexis in
Bridgeport this morning, he will be welcomed
by Gov. Jewell in behalf of the state.

The six Hartford suspended lire insurance
companies had declared in dividends from the
date of ih< ir organization to the Chicago fire,
$1,012,500, and lost at Chicago $4,500,000.
Mrs. Sarah Butler, of Menden, eighty
live years of age, was dangerously burned Sat
ur Liv, by her clothes taking lire from a stove.
A Mrs. Spencer, who attempted to quench the
tfames, was quite seriously burned.
The Rockville manufacturers begin to feel the
dull time. The Springfield company (satinet)
will shut down the works in a few days, to
await better times, and other mills are talking
of either a stoppage or a great curtailment in
their production.
A dozen young Cyntonians of both sexes got
on a platform car on the Connecticut Western
road, Sunday evening. for the fun of the thing,
but they set it agoing on a down grade and it
ran six miles to Simsbury street. They did not
enjoy the ride back—afoot.
The barn of Mr. Bradford Marcy, in Collom
ville, was burned on Saturday morning with
most of its contents. Three valuable horses
were with difficulty removed. The public
academy was slightly damaged, and the lumber
yard of Aiderman Son adjoining caught fire,
but the greater portion of the lumber was saved.
Loss $5000; partially covered by insurance. It
is supposed to have been the work of an incen
diary.
In the case of the First Ecclesiastical society
in Hartford vs. the town of Haitford to recover
taxes, heard by the supreme court in Septem
ber, a decision has been rendered, Judge Sey
mour giving the opinion. He decides that the
south store under the Centre church, which was
purchased by the society of Nathaniel Terry in
1831, tor which S4OOO was paid from an ancient
fund which was exempt from taxation, is
exempt; but that the north store, which was
purchased at the same time from Daniel Wads
worth for $3750, is not exempt, as it was paid
for in part by funds of the society not
exempt from taxation.
The Norwich fire insurance company is adjust
ing its losses on the basis of thirty-five per vent.
At the lime of the Chicago fire the company had
large risks in that city, audits losses amounted
t<» $475,000, on one hundred and forty policies.
I he claims of sixty-one of these policy holders
have been cancelled bv the payment of thirty
five per cent, and the settlement is still progress
ing. At the time of the fire the company had
elsewhere about $38,000 in unsettled claims, a
part of which has been settled on the basis of
thirty-five per cent, the remainder being now in
litigation. The company is at present doing no
business but merely settling its losses.
I lie grand jury summoned in Hartford last
week to present cases to the United States dis
trict court were so leaky that their findings were
published in the newspapers before they were
presented to the court. Thereupon Judge Ship
man refused to accept their return, and ordered
them to assemble again on Monday of this
week. On that day he sent them out to do their
work over again, giving them a sharp rebuke in
his charge, which concluded as follows:—“1
deem the preservation of this rule of secrecy of
great importance, and shall use whatever power
the law vests in me to maintain it. When the
jurors in this court, or in any other with which
1 may be connected, can no longer be preserved
from approaching, or being approached by
others, or of communicating the nature or prog
ress of their deliberations to the public or to in
dividuals, the administration of justice will be
come a farce, in which 1 shall not participate.”
RHODE ISLAND.
Mr. Jeremiah Bosworth, a well know citizen
of Bristol, and for many years actively engaged
in politics, died on Sunday, aged eighty vears.
The wholesale hat and cap establishment of
B. A. Whitcomb in Providence was damaged by
the bursting of a water pipe on the sth to the
amount of about SIOOO or SI2OO.
Tlie new Providence opera house, on Dor
rance street, lias a front of one hundred and
eleven feet, and the building covers a su peril cc
"f about ten thousand feet. The facades are of
pressed brick with trimmings of rose colored
Westerly granite; the cornices are of iron, and
the roof is surmounted by ornamental crestings.
The main entrance is twelve feet wide, the doors
swinging out, ami no care has been spa red to ren
der the building strong and safe. The audi
torium is seventj by fifty-four feet, comprising
parquet, balcony and family circle. There are
six proscenium boxes elaborately ornamented.
The aisles and floors of the parquet are carpet
ed; the seats, of bronzed iron and scarlet cloth,
are ample and easy. The balcony, parquet ami
boxes will seat fifteen hundred persons, comfort
and convenience being paramount to numbers.
