ESSEX COUNTY.
The residence ol Mr. George Upton, on (’best
nut street,Peabody, was nearly destroyed by tire
early on Saturday evening. The fire is supposed
to have originated irom a defective furnace.

The Salem Register says that Captain J. M.
Evitt ot the fishing schooner Charles 11. Price,
of that port, which arrived on Sunday, reports
that ten days ago, while the schooner was on
the Giand Banks, the cook threw over a line io
catch a fish for dinner, and having caught one,
threw the line over again and found that it
tended aft at a remarkable rate. He called the
captain, who went forward, and found the vessel
going ahead at about five knots speed, but could
not account for it. He ordered all hands called,
ami they hove in the cable to within about thirty
fathoms, when they discovered that their anchor
had got hooked to a large whale, which they
had before seen at some distance. The whale
ran with the schooner some little time longer.
The crew weather-bitted the cable, and in a shoit
time the whale sounded, broke the. anchor, and
carried away with him a good part of ii. The
crew tell the same story.
MAINE.
A shooting affair recently took place on the
bark Everett G.ay, Captain Loring, of Yar
mouth, lying at that port, loading with paving
for New Oilcans. One of the crew, a negro,
frum some reason refuse*! to obey orders, when
the first mate and another white attempted to
drive him to duty by beating him with a piece
of iron and a shovel. Captain Loring then fired
three shots at the negro, one hitting him in the
shoulder, one in the arm, and tiie third shot
grazing Iris ear. lhe other colored men—then
were six on board—then drew their knives and
demanded that their shipmate should not be
butchered before their eyes. The captain sent
them back to duty by a loaded riflf. The negro
was then handcuffed and lashed in a dark hole
during that day and the following night. The
correspondent says the affair has caused much
excitement among the people ol the usually quiet

virited the vessel during the day, but the wound
ed man was not seen, and the two balls lodged
in Iris flush were not taken out.

Last week a Mr. Liliot of Tilton went to Lake

he found her absent. He sat down by the barn
and was found senselets and nearly dead with
cold and frost.
On Saturday evening a fire broke out in a
large barn belonging to Mr. John Goffe, in Bed
foid. The barn, and also one hundred bushels of
corn, ten tons of hay and a lot of other fodder
were consumed. Six cows, a yoke of oxen, a
bull ami a horse wire also destroyed. The ori
gm of the fire is not known. Theie was an in
surance on the barn for SSOO. The Jos- was

Mr. B. \V. Kilburn, the photographer of Lit
tleion, intends passing a part of the winter
with the storm signal officers on Mount Wash
ington. In going up the mountain rucunth in
company with Mi. Kilburn and Mr. McCourt,
who works for the railway corporation, Mr.
Hearne, one of the goverutnent observers, came
near losing iris life. But for the timely aid of
his two companions, who were compelled to
carry him some of the way as he beta me un
conscious, he would have perished.
The Fairbanks scale works at St. Johnsbury
are now using eighteen ions of iron daily.
Each of the towns in the Missisquoi vallev
has one or more staich factories, where the
farmer* dispose of their potatoes, receiving from
twenty to twcuty-fivecents a bushel. The yield
of starch is about nine pounds to rhe bushel ol
TKitatoes; and as it costs only one cent to make,
there is a large margin for profit.
Charles F. V. Randall, a telegrapher, died at
St. Albans on Saturday, after an illness of forty
eight hours. He had been for several years in
the employ of the Vermont Central railroad, in
their office at headquarters as train dispatcher.
He was familiarly known to nearly all telegraph,
railroad and expressmen inthe statu, and was
universally esteemed. His age was about thinv
two years.
Mrs. Samuel H. Nyc of Northfield, lias eloped
with a young married man named Cross, a
laborer for her husband. Mrs. Nyc took with
her all the silverware in the house and what
money she could collect, besides contracting
large debts at the stores, while Cross pocketed
the proceeds of some poultry speculations upon
money furnished bv his cmplover, so that aho
gether Mr. Nye will lose about SIOOO, besides his
wife. Cross leaves a family with no means of
support.
CONNECTICUT.
A man by the name of Henry Sevmour was
killed last week by the Shore Line express near
the Naugatuck junction.
M bile the special train from Waterburv to
Bridgeport, on the Naugatuck road, was pass
ing through Seymour, Friday afternoon, the
engine ran over an unknown man and killed
him.
A Cbapinville cortespondent foots up thirty
places where liquor is sold in Salisbury. He
estimates the amount spent in that town for
liquor nr *‘joo fur each of these establishments
or $27,000 a year.
Thu Bridgeport post office was robbed of S2OOO
in postage stamps Friday afternoon. Iwo men
came in, and while one ol them engaged the
postmaster in conversation the other abstracted
the stamps from the safe.

Stephen H. Simes, Esq., a highly respected

On Saturday evening some burglars entered
the residence of Francis lotnes, on I‘atnam
avenue, Greenwich, by breaking in a i, ane f
glass in the rear of the house. They took a suit
of clothes and some other articles, and de
camped.
On Friday afternoon. Owen Fay, an employe
in the copper mill at Ansonia, while at work in
the mill was taken ill and had to be removed to
a house adjoining, where he died in a lew min
utes. He had been employed in the mill fur
twenty rears.
Charles Deming was drowned in North’s
pond, at the foot of Arch street, New Britain, al
aiMjut 8 o'clock last 1 bur&djy afternoon. He
was discovered under the ice by some boys who
went to the pond skating Fndav morning.
Deceased was about twenty-five years old and a
resident of U ether-field.

As Albert Ives, a well known resident of
Hampden, wa< driving home, Friday afternoon,
with a wagon load of furniture, his wagon col
lided with a buggy driven by (’lmries J. Pickett
of New Haven, who was driving at a furious
pace. Mr. Ives was thrown under the wheels of
Iris wagon, which passed over his head, killing
him instantly. Mr. Pickett was thrown out,
but was only slightly injured.
The Catholics of Hartford, whose church was
recently destroyed by fire, h:\vc leased the Tem
ple for the purpose of holding their services un
til the complex ion of a new house of worship.
At the .Sunday morning mass, Rev. Canon
Walsh announced his intention to immediately
begin the woik of building a new edifice that
will cost nearly $50,000. He alluded in very
complimentarv terms to the generous offers of
assistance which have been tendered him by
Protestant citizens since the destruction of his
house, ami counseled his fio’k to imitate the ex
ample of these generous individmrls by contrib
uting liberally to the object in view.
It is proposed to erect, what the town has
never had, a first class hotel in New London,
on State street, on the property lately owned by
Augustus Brnndegee. Ii is said that many per
sons go to adjacent towns rather than stay al a
New London hotel over night. As a German
expressed it: “Ven I stars in New London over
night I goes to the Hoxie house in Mystic.”
Gentlemen connected with the New London
Northern railroad have already subscribed $75,-
000 of the SBO,OOO necessary.
Mr Eli Hempstead died a short time since in
New Haven fiom a singular cause. Some years
ago he was attacked with insanity and was sent
to the insane retreat. While there he pushed a
watch key up his nose, and as ter his recovery in
formed his physician what he had done. An
effort was made to get it out, without success.
He left the retreat and nothing further was
done to remove the at tide, though he occasion
ally spoke of feeling it. In a year or two he
was attacked with a sharp pain at the lower
part of the right lung. He suffered from it for
some time, when it passed away, and for two
years he enjoyed good health. A few weeks
ago he went to New Haven with an invoice of
produce, and while engaged in lifting barrels
was again attacked with pain and bleeding
from the lungs. He was taken to his lather’s
house, where in a few days he died. His ease
was so singular that the physicians made a post
mortem examination, whan they found the
key embedded in the lower part of the lung
and surrounded by a lump in a state of mor
tification. The key had dtopped out of the
nose through the windpipe into the lung, and
had remained there over four years.
RHODE ISLAND.
Referring to the new Providence opera house,
a description ol which it gives, the Boston
franscript says: “This theatre will take its
place among the most complete ami beautiful
edifices of its kind and size in the country. The
building of it is due to the enterprise and liber
ality of a couple of gentlemen, who have spared
neither pains nor expense to give to the com
mercial and manufacturing capital ol Rhode
Island a place of entertainment worthy its
growth ami prosperity. Under the manage
ment of the experienced lessee, Mr. William
Henderson, who is one of the proprietors, it
ought to and no doubt will be a successful and
